Insightful Analytical Psychology

A very insightful and meaningful book, 11 intriguing essays in 244 pages. Jung is a deeper thinker, and I think not reductive like Freud and Adler tended to be. He makes no claim to dogmatism or absolutes. Jung really hits on the psyche and transcends the borders of rational intelligence into areas of the unconscious expressions in symbolism and images.

I am going to argue against another reviewer here that gave this book 4 stars as being outdated. When I look at the present collective societal structure and current cultural pattern apart from the minority of advanced individuals, I can see the postmodern man has regressed far from the modern man of the 1930's in search of a soul. Of course there as been advances individually, but on a collective level; fundamentalism, religious literalism, nationalism, patriotism and one-sided thinking This has grown in major proportions as opposed to the other way around and it is far more serious than most even realize and patterns after historical events of very similiar nature.

The first essay on dream-analysis hits on the idea that dreams are very hard to interpret and suggests that understanding the circumstances and conditions of the conscious life is significant in relation to the dreams of the unconscious life.

On the problems of psychotherapy, Jung relates four stages of analytical psychology, the confessional, explanation, education and transformation

"The great decisions of human life have as a rule far more to do with the instincts and other mysterious unconscious factors than with conscious will and well-meaning reasonableness. The shoe that fits one person pinches another; there is no recipe for living that suits all cases. Each of us carries his own life-form - an indeterminable form which cannot be superseded by any other." p. 61

The essay on the personality types is short, non-exhaustive and briefly relates Jung's ideas of the introvert, the extrovert and the 4 basic types consisting of those persons who are thinkers, feelers, sensory and intuitive.

In his essay on the stages of life, Jung ventures beyond childhood into early adulthood and the expansion of the self into sexual desires and masculine and feminine traits and how after somewhere in the 40's there begins a contraction of the self where men may acquire more feminine traits and women more masculine. In the second half of life less is needed to educate his conscious will but more aim towards the inner being, until old age where one leaves the rational self and retreats into the psyche as children yet in a different sense.

Jung acknowledges the validity of Freud and Adler and their valuable contributions, yet Jung sees Freud's sexual reduction to all neurosis as limiting, as well as Adler's will to power over inferiority as the sole cause. Both views have proven themselves as valid in many cases, yet Jung finds there is far much more levels in what he calls "value intensities," which underlie many complexes.

Jung also briefly goes into the archaic man's interpretation of all chance events having external meanings and causes, or as causal occurrences and the contrast of the modern man's ability to see the majority of chance and unexplainable events as the human imagination, as the perception of the human. Also the same ability of assumptions in the archaic man, can be seen in the modern who uses science as the foundation over the supernatural.

Jung's essay on psychology and literature is my favorite essay. It hits on something I both think of and am affected by almost every day. I found this entirely meaningful and very much profound. In this he writes of two types of writers; those that explain all they write of and those that have visions where their writing is obscure and needs the psychologist to read into. It is those visionaries that are the most inspiring. Here there exists those as in The Shepherd of Hermas, in Dante, in the second part of Faust, in Nietzsche's Dionysian exuberance, in Wagner's Nihelungenriing, in Spitteler's Olympischer Fruhling, in the poetry of William Blake, in the lpnerotomachia of the monk Francesco Colonna, and in Jacob Boehme's philosophic and poetic stammerings.

Jung speaks of the human intuition that points to things that are unknown and hidden, and by our very nature are secret and that throughout human history this unfathomable primordial source of creative experience been expressed in images, as in the sun-wheel, in attempting to point to this. The artist and poet will resort to mythology and images which only appear to occur in dreams, cases of insanity, narcotic states and eclipses of consciousness.

"A great work of art is like a dream; for all its apparent obviousness it does not explain itself and is never unequivocal. A dream never says; "you ought," or "this is the truth." It presents an image in much the same way as nature allows a plant to grow, and we must draw our own conclusions." p. 171

I really can't even begin to touch on all the vital, significant and soul inspiring information that is loaded in the pages of this book and I think as I try I am taking away from what's written far better than what I'll ever write. I recommend this book.

Soul searcing

I have always been deeply suspicious of the field of psychology. While I may not go so far as Richard Feynman did when he referred to them as the "modern day counterparts to witchdoctors," the discipline does make me rather nervous (if pushed to extremes).
That said, I have always respected Jung as an intellectually honest scientist. I may not agree with all his views, but I appreciate that fact that he is not the usual run-of-the-mill sterotyping pigeon-holer (as most psychologists are). His concept of the collective unconscious (whether it is correct or not) is rather fascinating. I do believe there is something to it, as these common archetypal images incessantly end up in our dreams and mythologies. It is not by chance that Joseph Campbell was so influenced by Jung's ideas as to incorporate many of them into his exegesis of mythology.
The present book is my all-time favorite book that is written in the psychology field. The book covers a diverse set of topics which Jung engages with his remarkable acumen. Some of the issues raised are the problems with psychotherapy, the contrasts between his views and those of Freud's (which led to their falling out), psychology and literature, and the spiritual problems of modern man.
One of the most interesting chapters of the book is entitled "Archaic Man." Jung details the psyche of tribes in such places as sub-Saharan Africa and New Guinea. Many of these cultures live the same way today that their ancestors lived thousands of years ago. Their psychological state, like their way of life, has been frozen in time. In essence, they are much the same as primitive man; the same as our own forefathers. Jung dicusses how they tend to explain everything via supernatural happenings. Much of the "reasoning" is anti-logic and extremely ad-hoc. However, Jung points out how such a dangerous and volatile envioronment as the jungle may coerce most anyone into thinking in ways which we "civilized" people would interpret as superstitous.
One of the underlying themes of the book is how we as a human race have become overly-logical today. It may be that primitive tribes may have something to teach us, after all. Somehow, we have descended into apathy after existing for thousands of years as a race that explained everything via the supernatural. This book is a wonderful dissection of the post-modern current state. It is highly recommend for any modern man in search of a soul.

The best place to start reading Jung

_Modern Man in Search of a Soul_ is the first book you should read by Jung. That is not to say that it is particularly easy; it is by no means a watered-down layman's version of Jung. This is Jung at full intensity. It is an ideal introduction simply because it deals with his more accessable concepts, such as the actual practice of psychotherapy, the doctor-patient relationship, the types of things a doctor should say to his patients, ect. It also deals with broader sociological issues and does not get bogged down with esoteric concepts such as alchemy and ancient mythology. Overall, I would say this is a perfectly crafted philosophical/psychological work. It is potent, miserly, well-written, well-translated, and never gets bogged down with unreadable, esoteric sections. It is not as far-reaching and revolutionary as some of Jung's works, but it is a magnificent work of art pared down to the absolute essentials. Overall it is one of the top five books ever written, by any author, from any genre or time period. Also, as a side note, I would recomend _Psychotherapy East and West_ by the American author Alan Watts as a companion piece to Jung's _Modern Man in Search of a Soul_.

The best flying memoir ever written.

Three years after her marriage to Charles Lindbergh, Anne Morrow Lindbergh left her infant son with her mother and a nanny in North Haven, Maine, strapped herself into the open cockpit of a Sirius floatplane, and flew with her husband to the Orient, following the Northwest Passage through arctic Canada and Alaska that her husband was surveying for the airlines. Her literate, supremely controlled prose is remarkable quite beyond the adventure itself. A year after her return, Anne Morrow faced the horror of her child's kidnapping and its aftermath and quite understandably fell into a prolonged depression. She wrote "North to the Orient" partly to rescue herself from the isolation and despair of those circumstances. The memoir went on to win the National Book Award and launch a celebrated career. You will not believe how gracefully she writes, what suspense she contains in her tight chapters. Finishing it, Anne Morrow Lindbergh not only contributed a literary adventure tale on a par with Wilfred Thesiger's "Arabian Sands." The writing of the book itself was a courageous act. This is one of the great neglected works of American nonfiction.

Anne Morrow Lindbergh would, I feel, have been a successful, published writer eventually even if she had never married Charles Lindbergh. This book, of course, is about one of her trips with him, so it is doubly interesting. She writes extremely well. It is still worth reading and reflecting on people's adventures to see what motivated them to try and what they did to succeed once they had the idea.

A Journey Through Uncharted Skies--Through Anne's Eyes...

Anne Morrow Lindbergh's own description of her life, and that of her husband Charles Augustus, is as great a love story as has ever been told... ...and "North to the Orient" but a mere chapter!
They seemed destined to be at each other's side, living tales such as this.
Anne describes best her attempt to chronicle this aerial and literary journey for her reader:
"I have not written a technical account of a survey flight on the great circle route from New York to Tokyo. I do not know enough to write one, and if I did, the time for doing so would be past. Aviation moves a long way in four years. No geographical knowledge can be gained from reading my story. We constructed no maps or charts, and I have not even kept a scientific record of all the territory passed. It is not in any sense a guidebook. Our stops were so short and hurried that only a superficial picture remains. Nor is each point on our route portrayed, but only those which seem to warrant description for the vividness of impression."
She adds pointedly that, "It was not that we arrived in Baker Lake on August third by plane, but that three hours of flying had brought us from the modern port of Churchill to a place where no white woman had ever been before...", concluding that:
"One has only to see the chasm between accessibility and isolation--narrow, so one could reach across, but deep as time--to appreciate what can bridge it."
In "North to the Orient", we gain the opportunity to see air travel pioneered "first person"--through the eyes of a woman--yes:
...riding along...
...but not as baggage or ballast, but rather, as a working participant in an important expedition.
...one who crews not only a primitive, tandem-cockpit aircraft of wood and fabric, but also operates its radio of tubes and coils where transmissions are made via a Morse Code key.
...and one who also flies this wooden wonder into the unknown, as her companion silently rests--trusting, and not fearing--while she takes him to places he too, has never known.
I think that is where the beauty lies--not in the journey or the adventure itself--but how she somehow manages to remain side-by-side with her companion in life; how he responds and thrives just by being in her eyes; and how she is needed.
How no one dares question this soulfully-dependant relationship between the two!
Rather, all the world endeavors in its attempt to understand these two lovers and adventurers...
...and in understanding her, in particular.
One marvels at her words from the confines of the cockpit, as they embark from North Haven on the first leg of their dangerous journey, leaving friends, family, and even their baby behind, on this remarkable, selfless quest:
"The day was hard and clear and bright, like the light slanting off a white farmhouse. The island falling away under us as we rose in the air lay still and perfect, cut out in starched clarity against a dark sea. I had the keenest satisfaction in embracing it all with my eye. It was mine as though I held it, an apple in my hand. All the various parts of it were mine at the same moment; the crowd on the pier, the little rocking boat in the harbor where my family waved, the white farmhouse on the point where my baby was. What a joy to hold them all in my eyes at once, as one tries, saying good-by to a person, to possess all of them in one look."
She, this tiny Columbus, venturing out toward the excitement of the unknown, and yet--stopping for just a moment to glance back, longing for one more memory of the present day, before advancing toward the night.
On this day--and on this journey--no longer were mankind's accomplishments to be measured by the acts of hundred-man crews in vessels of wood and sail, to be led by a single commander.
Nor would an "Eagle" venture forward in a small, frail craft, alone.
For now a woman was unconfined...untethered...rendered equal.
On this day, a husband-and-wife team would dare brave the worst of nature's elements--fragile in the moment--as they were but two souls alone in uncharted skies, living both a love and an adventure...ethereal.
Thus, here is where Anne's story truly begins:
"Our route was new; the air untraveled; the conditions unknown; the stories mythical; the maps, pale, pink, and indefinite, except for a few names, far to the east of our course, to show that someone before us pointed his ship, also, 'North to the Orient'."
And as Anne re-lives this modern-day "Odyssey", descriptive images follow, taking us on a journey not so much involving destinations, but rather, a journey of adventure; a journey of rare natural and human gifts that she came to experience, and of an even rarer selection of people they met along the way.
Thus, "North to the Orient" becomes a reiteration of "life lived at its fullest"...
...an awakening for those who read this story, and no doubt...
...a hope within Anne that--by having written this masterpiece chapter in the love story of her life--she will inspire others to go forth!

I consider all her works to be a "must-reading" for men in particular, if one should ever hope to comprehend the true beauty that exists within women...

About the Author

Eliot's greatest and final poetic acheivement

FOUR QUARTETS marks T.S. Eliot's crowning acheivement as a poet. It is the last substantial poetry he wrote before turning to drama and consists of four poems each with a five-part structure. The work as a whole is concerned with the perception of time, linked with the importance of poetic art and the place of Christianity in deciphering the meaning of one's lifetime.
After two quotations from Heraclitus, "Burnt Norton" opens the collection. Here Eliot muses on the idea that all possible outcomes of any event are secretly around us, unseen and unperceived. An empty pool is, in some other reality, filled with water and a blooming lotus. Eliot's metaphysical insight here is reminiscent of quantum theory that was then beginning to become the rage in physics circles. These speculations are tricky and difficult to get one's head around, and even more difficult to plainly put into words, but Eliot manages to succeed.
"East Coker", named after the town in England from where Eliot's Puritan ancestor emigrated to America, deals with the cyclical nature of time. Here the poet surveys the tendency for all earthly things to rise and ultimately fall. Christianity with its emphasis on eternal life, asserts Eliot, promises a way to change one's end to one's beginning and escape the fall into oblivion that dooms everything.
"The Dry Salvages", in reference to a place on the New England shore which Eliot visited as a youth, is the weak point of the collection. A rumination with a nautical theme, the poem suffers from meandering phrasing and peculiar wording. Its Marian devotion is inconsistent with the Puritan/Anglican tradition of the rest of FOUR QUARTETS. Most would attack "The Dry Salvages" for its oft-maligned line "I sometimes wonder if this is what Krishna meant", seen by some as overly haugty intellectualism. I think this is unfair, and in fact the section which that line begins is the one bit that redeems the poem. Eliot's Harvard education, where he first became familiar with Eastern thought, was 30 years in the past, but the subject still preoccupied him in this poem.
"Little Gidding" superbly ends FOUR QUARTETS. It was written in the height of the Blitz, a time of fear and doubt in England, but it counters Hitler's madness with a note of hope and spiritual triumph. Eliot calls back to an earlier conflict, England's Civil War, and seeks any lesson it might teach his generation. "The communication of the dead," he writes, "is tongued with fire beyond the language of the living." As the poem ends, he has acheived inner peace in a time of pandemonium, through the realisation that the pain of the present is escapable by reaching to the past - what poets have done before - and the future - what is still left to be written.
FOUR QUARTETS is a complicated and vast work. While not as full of obvious quotations as his earlier, more popular work "The Waste Land", it does work in inspiration and material from Christian thinkers such as St. John of the Cross and Julian of Norwich, and contains many illusions to 17th century England. As a result, the work is incredibly deep and one can find something new with each reading. But FOUR QUARTETS is also an entertaining work for the casual reader. A combination of smooth and engaging sound with the great themes of all time is a remarkable combination. Eliot's greatest work, I'd wholeheartedly recommend it.

T.S. Eliot for Sikhs

I am a deeply religious Sikh living in America. The Four Quartets is to me a shining example of a man of deep understanding of God and reality. I have read this poem many times since I first read it back in college. It speaks directly to my soul. There is no passage, no phrase, which does not work for me.

I read some sections to my wife when we were first married, and she thought that it was an English translation of the Sikh holy texts.

"We shall not cease from exploration
And the end of all our exploring
Will be to arrive where we started
And know the place for the first time"

There is no better explanation of Eastern religion than this. I am eternally grateful for this work.

Of all the books I've ever read, this is the one!

A kind friend introduced me to this book 25 years ago. It is so full of real life, as it is. In grasping for words to describe what cannot be described by words, T.S.Eliot has written a masterpiece that will endure for as long as there are people to read books. Each reading takes you inside, yet out of time a space. If I could pick the most meaningful book I have ever encountered, this would be it... the one you take to that desert island; the one you take with you through your life. Don't analyze this book, let it reach out to you, allow it to become an old friend, and it will enrich your life.

About the Author

CARL SANDBURG (1878–1967) was twice awarded the Pulitzer Prize, first in 1940 for his biography of Abraham Lincoln and again in 1951 for Complete Poems. Before becoming known as a poet, he worked as a milkman, an ice harvester, a dishwasher, a salesman, a fireman, and a journalist. Among his classics are the Rootabaga Stories, which he wrote for his young daughters at the beginning of his long and distinguished literary career.

Remembrance Rock - or, "Why We Fight", the epic novel

Well, you certainly cannot accuse Carl Sandburg of not being ambitious in his one and only novel.

Remembrance Rock is nearly 1100 pages, and weighs about 2 pounds (hardcover version). In it, Sandburg attempts to explain to the reader what freedom is (to Americans, anyway). What freedom is... the lengths people will go to get it, and, above all, the grave and sobering fact that freedom is not free; the freedoms that we enjoy as Americans have been won with the blood and suffering of many many of our ancestors - great and small - throught the ages from before our country was born, to the dropping of the atomic bomb. The book explores 3 of these American ages.

In the first 'book' Sandburg follows the trials and tribulations of the Pilgrims; not just the well-documented problems that they faced once they got to Plymouth in 1620, but a whole host of problems during the 12 years prior to their leaving! Like I said... Sandburg is nothing but thorough. We follow in particular the Spong family, who try to hold to their religious faith as their little community of Plymouth grows, faces Indians, hordes of uncouth newcomers, and the threatening ideas of Roger Williams.

The second book takes place during the Revolutionary War. In the years leading up to the conflict, Loyalist loyalties are tested, reinforced, and cast aside, a small band of printers stirs up trouble, and Marintha Wilming - a seamstress in a Loyalist dress shop - must decide how far her loyalties go with her rebel beau, Robert Winshore. William Pitt and Thomas Payne's ideas lurk in the background while Sam Adams and John Hancock make cameos.

The third book deals with - you guessed it - the Civil War. Brother against brother. This part is really the strongest part of Sandburg's book... for a while. Sandburg does a really good job of showing the extent that the Civil War and the question of slavery tore the country apart. He shows the zealots and bigots on both sides, perhaps more so showing the abolishinists as the "inflexible warmongers."

On either side of the body of the work are a prologue and epilogue - set in the final days of WW II - sort of the set up and take down for the whole idea, where the main themes of the book are brought forth and expounded upon. And it is here, sadly, where the book falls flat. The prologue sets up the story: a former Supreme Court Justice writes this big ol' book and puts it in a box for his grandson, Ray, (who is back from the war suffering from shell-shock) and his wife (who is trying to drag him out of it).

The main themes he tries to hammer home are played out in the epilogue between Ray, Mimah, and several of their friends - other WWII vets in various stages of injury and recovery.

I give this book 4 stars... 4.5 for effort and 3.5 for execution. Sandburg gets too tied to his grandiose metaphors and ultimately gets tripped up by them. If I were to edit this book (HA! Like I'm in any position to tell the great Carl Sandburg what to do!) I would say "either strip the prologue/epilogue down, or expand on it and make it a fourth book."

All in all, though, it is an inspiring read, it will make you proud to be an American (and God knows we need more of that and, no, I am NOT being sarcastic), and it will make you appreciate what past generations have sacrificed to make this great country... The United States of America... The greatest country on Earth.

And what is Remembrance Rock? Well... it ain't a Saturday morning kids show! You'll just have to read it.

Ambitious, but . . .

Carl Sandburg is best remembered for his poetry and his multi-volume biography of Abraham Lincoln. In addition, he also wrote an excellent memoir about his childhood years and this 1,000 page novel (among other things). The theme of the book is America, mainly the Pilgrims, the Revolutionary War, and the Civil War. It's a sprawling book as it deals with each period, so sprawling that the characters, and there are many of them, never really come to life. Sandburg writes well, and much of the novel takes on a poetic feel. But the novel seems more about the American Dream than the flesh-and-blood people who actually dream (and live) it.

Simply a great novel.

If you like historical fiction you will love this novel. Carl Sandburg's saga of America covers four major eras of our history: the Puritan's founding of the Plymouth colony;the Revolutionary War; the Civil War; and World War Two. Sandburg makes the characters come alive as they struggle with individual life circumstances and major issues of their respective historical periods. As a reader you will be saddened by their failures and revel in their accomplishments. This is one of the best novels I have ever read.

A gem from a truly complex writer

Loren Eisley has been described as the 20th century's answer to Henry David Thoreau, and when reading this book it's hard to doubt the description. Eisley writes in a thought-provoking, almost mystical style unlike few authors I've ever read...he has a gift for seeing both the heights and limits of science like no other scientist I have known of. He is a naturalist, poet, realist, existentialist, haunted mystic, evolutionary anthropologist, environmental advocate, historian, and human being, 200 proof. Few have lived their lives so fully; few have left us such a legacy of poetry and prose. This book is an anthology of his best work, selected from several past publications including "The Immense Journey" and others, as well as including a few rare gems like his poetry. His reflections upon humankind, time, evolution, the Earth, the natural world, the unknown, and even the very nature of existence itself are more powerful than the most dense scientific formulae or the most sacred tomes of Scripture. He looks at our mysterious universe with the eyes of a human being, and he looks at his own soul in the process...and along the way, he helps us to find our own. Make no mistake; this is not the work of a theologian or a secularist; if one is looking for affirmations of either God's glory or dry theses of a devout Darwinist, look elsewhere. These are the stories of a complex human being who, first to himself and then to the rest of us, admits that there is far more in heaven and earth than is dreamed of in our philosophy.

"the mundane world gives way to quite another dimension..."

I was sitting in a coffeeshop, when a guy I had been talking to earlier placed Loren Eiseley's "The Star Thrower" in front of me. "Read it," he said.
And so I did.
The title initially intrigued me, but my interest was held by the poetic quality to Eiseley's stories. Seeing the natural world through his eyes is a departure into another realm. His words cast new light onto seemingly simple ideas in nature. He sees a moth pass by while watching an outdoor opera and wonders, "whose is the real play?" Eiseley's writings capture the sheer beauty and innocence of nature. Only he can turn a chance encounter in the woods with a fox into a spiritual event. Only he can gain confidence by coming across a web-spinning spider: "the mind, it came to me as I slowly descended the ladder, is a very remarkable thing; it has gotten a kind of courage by looking at a spider in a street lamp."
So I shall give the simple advice I have been given: read it.

a unique read for any deep thinkers

I first encountered this book when I was looking for an author to do a high school english project on, and I was immediately drawn to this little-known author through the expressive style of his writing and the deeply unique philosophy inherent in every piece of work. Eiseley was not just a talented writer but a deeply emotional naturalist and his profound respect for all things living is apparent throughout his works. As he walks us through his close brushes with nature we are allowed a glimpse of the vast poetic world that we so often ignore.
Eiseley writes intimately of his natural encounters, and we get a feeling that he is a rare man who felt somewhat out of place in the busy, fallible human world, and dwelled more along the indistinct boundary whose edges blur first into the natural world and then into the world we have made our own. An old adage has often gone "Every minute is precious" and Eiseley holds to this with an energy that turns every second, be it spent on a balcony bathed in early morning sunlight, or watching the jeweled webs of a spider into an infinitely precious memory never to be forgotten.
This is without a doubt one of the most lyrical and insightful works on nature that you will ever read. If you are an avid naturalist you will be even more appreciative of all things that grow when you have finished reading this book. With a flourish of his pen, Eiseley reminds us that there is another life we may live, one where money, which has come to be central to our societies, and the essential human weakness, has no place beside the whisper of leaves drifting to the forest floor and the silken flow of crystal waters.

Goodwin's first novel in over two decades (after Blood of Paradise, 1979) is psychologically acute, if somewhat overplotted. Tucker Jones is a 44-year-old divorced father of two living in Washington, D.C. His life is settled in a comfortable routine until the night he receives an enigmatic phone call informing him that his 14-year-old daughter, Kat, has been involved in sexual games at a party. Blinded by worry and rage, Tucker finds the party and confronts a group of boys while looking for Kat; before the night is over, a high school junior loses his eye, and Tucker becomes embroiled in criminal proceedings that threaten to destroy his career (he owns a landscape business), family and financial stability. Goodwin tackles many subplots, including Tucker's relationship with Kat and her younger brother, Will; the ongoing litigation; and an affair that Tucker has with the mother of Kat's best friend. Tucker's reflections ramble from his son's fishing exploits to his ex-wife to the garage band he has formed with several other parents in the neighborhood. The plot becomes so busy that Goodwin loses control of the narrative at points. Still, the author's emotional compass is unfailing; he offers a memorable exploration of familial love and penance, with a likably bewildered-and articulate-protagonist: "I groaned with lust and remorse and an awareness of the disorder that seemed ready to swallow me up."

Single-father Tucker Jones receives a late-night phone call informing him that his 14-year-old daughter, Kat, is in trouble. She was spotted at a party drinking vodka shooters and engaging in sex games with some older boys. Tucker, overcome with a deep, burning fury, goes to the scene of the party and within a few short minutes becomes involved in a melee in which high-school senior Jed Vandenberg is seriously injured. Jed's wealthy and influential father has Tucker arrested and served with a lawsuit that could ruin him. Suddenly, Tucker finds the list of house rules posted on their refrigerator ("Show up on time") woefully inadequate. Goodwin gets so many things right here--the halting, painful conversations between father and daughter; the fact that the grievously injured Jed was not one of the boys who took advantage of Kat; the way Tucker has shut himself down to avoid further pain after his bitter divorce; and, especially, the tenacity of a father's love for his children. Goodwin eclipses his wonderful "The Blood of Paradise"....

"Breaking Her Fall" - the title says what we all feel about our daughters; about the peculiar loss of them as they enter the teenage years, the years in which their ability to be a person in their own right is eclipsed by the pressures of a society gone mad in depicting the sexuality of a "woman" as young as 14. Tucker's daughter Kat, at 14, is in the throes of this hormonal madness, and he doesn't even know it. Tucker's an oddity, a father who has won primary custody of daughter and son when his former wife moved up the social ladder and mostly out of their lives.

It's hard not to like Tucker, who's a self-made man, with a love for music and a need to be there for his children. It is with some trepidation that we watch him turn to rage when Kat is involved in a sex scandal at the home of a boy he knows nothing about. In slow motion, his rage leads to injury and disfigurement of the boy, and incarceration and trial. But his trials are many, both in trying to understand and protect his daughter, keep his younger son from fear, his love for his best friend's wife at bay, and himself from going mad.

The strain of parenting adolescents in this mixed up world is brought to the fore in Kat's tale, and although it is written in first person from Tucker's point of view, there is no doubt that author Stephen Goodwin was able to get inside the heads of all his main characters...from children Kat and Will to the amazing Lilly, from Trish, his ex-wife who attempts to preserve her motherhood from the tragedy, to the teenaged Jed Vandenberg, with a permanent scar from a heated misunderstanding. Goodwin makes them all come alive on the page. And he does more, something more, that, for me, brings the book to life - he brings in the ordinary; talks about the what the notes on his refrigerator say, talks about the demise of his marriage, has a remarkable reaction (like many of us) to the first time he hears the beautiful songs of the posthumous Eva Cassidy CD, "Songbird". ..."as I danced with my daughter, her eyes searching mine, the two of us just floating, I felt something give way inside of me....as though all our old love, every particle of it, had been restored to us by the music we were hearing."

As my own daughter grew up, I remember times of anger and despair that seemed like an out of body experience, and so it is with Tucker... in describing his violent reaction to young Jed Vandenburg, at a time where he had no idea where his 14-year old daughter was and if she was all right..."I can remember how the air seemed to stiffen and tighten, how every word and tiny gesture took on a huge significance, and how the hair on the back of my neck suddenly bristled".

Goodwin is a writer of style and grace, his book a revelation and a scare for parents and adolescents, a book that will stay with you longer than the details of the story itself.

This book is awesome! From the first moment I cracked open Breaking Her Fall, I found myself a huge fan of Tucker Jones, rooting for his safe return from his perilous journey-entirely modern, entirely timeless-into all matters of the heart. Graceful, deft, humorous, more than a heartfelt account of fatherly love, Breaking is the story of a single father trying to reach his teenage daughter, his son; it's the story, also, of a man who must learn to put the past behind him and venture out into unchartered territory, towards relationships where love-meaningful love-is honored above safer, more complacent, constructs. By book's end I felt appropriately challenged-to love honestly; to love better. To find a love that matters. Thank you, Mr. Goodwin. You have delivered us a true gift: a story that is both a marvelous adventure and a call to action. Wake up! Read the book. Your heart will thank you.

A father � daughter relationship caught on the brink

The year is 1998 and the Clinton sex scandals are plaguing the White House; all over the country people are talking and passing judgment on the President. This unlikely setting forms the backdrop for Stephen Goodwin's ambitious, intelligent and somewhat overemotional story of teenage sex, and family relationships. Although to some extent melodramatic in places, Breaking Her Fall is still a very accomplished, and at times, quite riveting domestic drama, that really captures you from the outset, and embraces you in its entirety.
One night Tucker Jones, an American "ordinary man" - a loving and devoted father receives a hostile phone call from another parent who blames his thirteen-year-old daughter, Kat, for indulging in a drunken sexual orgy with some boys at a party. This sets of a chain reaction of violence and recrimination, which reverberates throughout Tucker's entire life affecting his children, his ex-wife, his current girlfriend, and his best friends. On the surface, the story passes for an attention-grabbing legal drama, where Tucker - accused of assaulting one of the boys - fights to save his reputation, and his innocence. But, in reality, the story is much more than this: Goodwin introduces us to a subtle domestic world seething with pent up tensions - strained relationships between ex-wives; father-daughter relationships that are not what they seem; unspoken sexual passions between best friends that are clandestinely acted upon, and teenage pregnancy which inevitably rears its controversial head.
Goodwin writes with a clear confidence of a professional, and he keeps the narrative taught and tight by placing the story in the first person and always telling the story through Tucker's point of view, The narrative flows with a gentleness and ease, never loosing sight of its focus, and the author is determined to share with us every aspect of Tucker's life - from his days doing drugs in college, to the history of his courtship with his ex-wife Trish, to his decision to leave the corporate world, and build an independent life for himself as a landscape gardener. The strength of Breaking Her Fall is also in its enthusiastically believable characters: There's the somewhat self-obsessed and hot-headed main protagonist Tucker, who doesn't think before he acts, but who loves his two children dearly; there's Kat, Tucker's teenage daughter - impetuous, rude, conflicted and unhappy, and there's Tucker's best friend Lily, naive and kind, whose only crime is to want more passion in her life and be the woman who Tucker really loves. There are lots of other supporting characters that weave with equal grace in and out of the narrative, each contributing their own stories, and each influencing Tucker's life in one way or another.
About half way through the book, the character of Lily, speaking at her father's funeral talks about how her father made her feel safe and rescued, and that if she "fell" her father would be there to catch her. Perhaps this reflects the thematic core of the novel in that there should always be someone there to catch us if we fall. Loneliness, loss, the inability to communicate, family structures, the value of friendships, and the ability to be able to make the "right" decision are all presented in Breaking Her Fall with an astute and sensitive clarity. This is a very perceptive and emotionally sensitive piece of work.

If you teach reading or writing you have to read this book!!

"Those who write well have more power and therefore have more control over their lives" (p.21). If this is indeed true then Mem Fox is a very powerful woman! In the midst of the phonics vs. whole language war being raged in the media, this book is a call for reading and writing teachers to examine their practices and strive for truly purposeful, artful teaching. Fox's insights into her life as a writer, teacher and mother make this a truly inspiring and intensely challenging read. I have always believed that to be an effective reading teacher, I must be a reader, able to share my passion for books with my students, but Mem Fox points out that unless I am a writer as well, I will be unable to know the difficulties, fears, hopes and needs of my students as writers. I plan to thoughtfully explore the forms of writing I use, examine the writing process I go through and share my writing with my students on a more regular basis. I am convinced that we will all grow from the experience!!

Why teach reading

I like to read this book just before I start a new school year. It reminds me of the reasons children want to learn to read. I teach remedial reading. The programs my district uses focuses on phonetic instruction. My students do need specific instruction to decode words, but they also need to be motivated and to know the pleasures of reading. This book helps keep my priorities right .

An absolute must for teachers, parents, administrators

I just finished reading this exquisite book, and have sent emails to all my friends who are educators and/or parents. Fox writes with such passion and voice that I couldn't put the book down once I started it. Her ideas are needed, her style is eloquent, fluent and mesmerizing. This is a book I will read again and again, especially at the start of each new school year. What she says is as important for high school learners as for kindergarten. She has stated so succinctly why it's essential to keep the heart in education. She shows how children can come to the love of reading, writing and thinking. Her diatribe against fill-in-the-blank worksheets is convincing. I will give a copy to every teacher that my children will have throughout their schooling.

About the Author

ANTOINE DE SAINT-EXUPÉRY, the "Winged Poet," was born in Lyon, France, in 1900. A pilot at twenty-six, he was a pioneer of commercial aviation and flew in the Spanish Civil War and World War II. His writings include The Little Prince, Wind, Sand and Stars, Night Flight, Southern Mail, and Airman's Odyssey. In 1944, while flying a reconnaissance mission for his French air squadron, he disappeared over the Mediterranean.

A peek back at the aviation's dangerous roots

There already exist a dozen or more excellent reviews on this early aviation piece. I humbly add my thoughts.

This novel, written 1930ish by the famous author/flyer Antoine De Saint-Exupery, in the pioneering days of aviation, encompasses two stories playing out simultaneously:

1. In the cockpit of a night mail plane, flying out of Patagonia, Chile, over the Andes and towards points north. A primitive aircraft, with primitive radio, only dead-reckoning navigation, and no radar. The plane has become enclosed in an overwhelming storm system and the pilot is flying blind in complete blackness. The situation develops and becomes summarized in the following sentence from the story, " . . . a phantom ship that, as things were, struggled no longer to win a punctuality-bonus, but only to evade a penalty . . . the penalty of death."

2. On the ground in Buenos Aries, the director of the S America air mail effort, Riviere. In his drive to establish and develop the program, he has championed the night mail flights. Now a plane and crew has become in mortal danger. Riviere weighs all factors including especially the worth of what they are doing versus the costs. His thoughts, from the story, " . . . even though human life may be the most precious thing on earth, we always behave as if there were something of higher value than human life . . . But what thing?"

A great novel. Serious introspection, and a fascinating glimpse at the nuts and bolts of early aviation. A nice prelude, by the way, to Saint-Ex's landmark work, "Wind, Sand, and Stars". A comprehensive autobiographical tale, and larger than fiction, along these same lines.

If you never were reading LITTLE PRINCE by Antoine de Saint Exupery

you lost a part of life.

His prose, and he was a Noble guy who left his wife in his castle, and became a WWII pilot, - his prose is POETRY or the first class.
We didn't read yet this story, but we loved 'WIND, SAND and STARS'. Also very poetic, and filled with LOVE TO PEOPLE, to Earth, to national and religious misunderstanding.... Antoine was a pilot whose plane - in 1943 - was never found (Meditteranean Sea). Just before that he published his lost book telling to the adults how to be KIDS FOREVER. It is his legacy for his kids, and for us. We started the book, and it is great

The master strikes again!

St. Exupery is a master writer. From the first sentence, I couldn't put it down and though it's very introspective and there's much philosophizing
which I sometimes find wearisome in a story, I couldn't stop because he kept me going, wanting to know what was going to happen.
I'm still waiting for Flight to Arras to arrive in the mail and I'm looking forward to reading it too.
