The Far Traveler: Voyages of a Viking Woman, by Nancy Marie Brown

Five hundred years before Columbus, a Viking woman named Gudrid sailed off the edge of the known world. She landed in the New World and lived there for three years, giving birth to a baby before sailing home. Or so the Icelandic sagas say. Even after archaeologists found a Viking longhouse in Newfoundland, no one believed that the details of Gudrid’s story were true. Then, in 2001, a team of scientists discovered what may have been this pioneering woman’s last house, buried under a hay field in Iceland, just where the sagas suggested it could be.  Joining scientists experimenting with cutting-edge technology and the latest archaeological techniques, and tracing Gudrid’s steps on land and in the sagas, Nancy Marie Brown reconstructs a life that spanned—and expanded—the bounds of the then-known world. She also sheds new light on the society that gave rise to a woman even more extraordinary than legend has painted her and illuminates the reasons for its collapse.

From Publishers Weekly
While most medieval women didn't stray far from home, the Viking Gudrid (985–1050) probably crossed the North Atlantic eight times, according to Brown. Rather than just a passenger, Gudrid may have been the explorer on North American expeditions with two different husbands (one was the brother of Leif Ericson, who discovered America 500 years before Columbus). Brown (A Good Horse Has No Color) catches glimpses of Gudrid in the medieval Icelandic sagas which recount that her father, a chieftain with money problems, refused to wed Gudrid to a rich but slave-born merchant; instead he swapped their farm for a ship and a new life in Greenland. Specifics about her life are sparse, so Brown, following in Gudrid's footsteps, explores the archeology of her era, including the splendid burial ships of Viking queens; the remains of Gudrid's longhouse in a northern Icelandic hayfield; the economy of the farms where she lived; and the technology of her time, including shipbuilding, spinning wool and dairying. But the plucky and adaptable Gudrid remains mysterious, so this impressively researched account will interest serious students of Icelandic archeology, literature and women's history more than the general reader. "... [A] marvelously sneaky history of the Viking mind. A nimble synthesis of the literary and the scientific that will charm even readers who didn't know they were interested." --Kirkus Reviews

"Brown rightly leaves scholarly work to scholars. Instead, her account presents an enthusiastic appreciation of her education in how fieldwork and literature offer insights into the past." --The Seattle Times

PRAISE FOR THE FAR TRAVELER "[A] snappily written biography . . . In surprising flashes, Gudrid comes into focus. Brown pursues Gudrid out of admiration for a woman bold and wise. I eagerly pursued this book, which is as much about Brown's adventures as Gudrid's, for the very same reasons."—The New York Times Book Reivew

Remarkable Perspective on the Norse World
By Patrick J. Stevens
Nancy Marie Brown's The Far Traveler is a wonderfully intelligent and immediate narrative not only of the journeys of Gudrid, the Icelandic colonist of North America around the year 1000 who also made a pilgrimage to Rome, but also of the dangerous world and harsh climate she inhabited--and how her people, the Icelanders and Greenlanders, sustained their way of life in the North Atlantic environment.

With little known from the Icelandic sagas about the life of Gudrid, author Brown makes excellent use of a range of sources to reconstruct the Norse world, recounting along the way her own work as a volunteer archaeologist at Glaumbaer in Iceland, likely Gudrid's last home. Not to be forgotten among these sources of information are the experimental archaeologists who have built replicas of Viking ships and, as important, have reconstructed the techniques of women's work in the Norse world, so much of it based on the economically vital production of cloth from wool.

I highly recommend this engaging, fluently written, deeply researched book.

Vivid Account of Viking Life
By Bruce Trinque
The far-traveling Viking woman of the title was Gudrid Thorbjarnardottir, once a sister-in-law of Leif Eirikson and reputedly the mother of the first European child born in North America. The little which is known specifically of Gudrid comes from two Icelandic sagas: "Eirik the red's Saga" and "The Greenlanders' Saga", but even those two sources disagree with one another about details of Gudrid's life. What we can be reasonably sure of is that Gudrid was born in Iceland, traveled to the new Norse Greenland colonies in about the year 1000, became a ward of Eirik the Red, and married his son, Thorstein, who soon died. Widowed, Gudrid then married the Icelandic merchant Thorfinn Karlsefni, apparently convinced Karlsefni to attempt colonization of the newly discovered Vinland, lived with her husband for three years in Vinland -- at L'Anse aux Meadows in Newfoundland, it seems -- giving birth to a son, Snorri, then returned to Greenland and then back to Iceland, where Karlsefni died. In later life, Gudrid may have made a pilgrimage to Rome and returned to Iceland to die a nun.

With so few details of Gudrid's life certain, the greatest part of Nancy Marie Brown's book is devoted to exploring what we know of Viking life, especially in Iceland, and what we don't know, plus a first-hand account of Brown's experiences as a volunteer archaeologist at the site of what appears to be Gudrid's final home in Iceland. Along the way, the author discusses the nature of Icelandic sagas and the fine Viking arts of cheese-making and weaving. All this is done in an engaging manner that brings Gudrid (and modern Iceland) fully to life.

My only real criticism of the book is that it could have benefited from additional maps and from diagrams of the Norse ruins at L'Anse aux Meadows and of Gudrid's Icelandic farm at Glaumbaer.

Excellent Final Volume
By moviefanatic
Volume Five is about loss. Loss of peers, friends, privacy, love, respect, peace. Loss of lifelong dream of having savings and comfort in old age. Loss of room of her own. Food is rationed, belongings are destroyed; black-out curtains. "It's an empty meaningless life now" . Sounds gloomy but it is a fascinating page-turner.

Not for people who like to read actual stories rather than leaden philosophical treatises

Suffers from the pretentiousness and grandiosity that afflicts so much science fiction. Too much idea, not enough story.

"...the...fortress, had fallen at last...destroyed by the patient tendrils of the ivy and the...blindly burrowing worms."
By Mark Louis Baumgart
This book is an omnibus of two stories, one novella and one novel from Arthur C. Clarke's early days as an science fiction writer. In this book's Introduction Clarke states that he was influenced in writing these by John W. Campbell and his story 'Twilight', and Olaf Stapleton and his novel "Last And First Men". And while I can see these influences, especially in Clarke's millennia reaching concepts here, these stories also clearly have the influences of writers like his contemporary Leigh Brackett, and his predecessor Clark Ashton Smith stamped all over these two stories.

The first story here is the novella "The Lion Of Comarre". In it, and in the year 3100, Richard Peyton III is an utter disgrace to his family. His father and his great and influential grandfather want him to go into something respectable, like the arts, but Richard is stubborn, he wants to specialize in the lost skills of being a technologist/engineer. Unable to change his parents minds, Richard runs away to his friend's, Alan Henson II, residence where Alan's research into Richard's ancestry has found that he is a direct descendent, twenty-two times removed, to the great Rolf Thordarsen, the legendary creator and builder of the fabled Comarre. Comarre was built by the ancients, which lasted but a brief time in human history before falling to human apathy. However, those human ruler that came later have chosen to destroy and/or hide all information and knowledge about it, so that now, like Atlantis, Comarre is has become a legend among mankind.

Richard, with the help of the scientific underground finds his way to Comarre, and it is here that he that he will find out if the legends told about Comarre are correct, or whether the legend is just that, a legend.

This is a charming, and innocent questing, and coming-of-age story as a young man finds his purpose in life. Personally, I found the novella a little too short, it could have gone on for more pages, and I still would have enjoyed this story just as much. It's too bad that Clarke never continued Richard's story in further stories. But, maybe it was for the best as the imaginative reader can now create Richard's life from this point onward, as we were probably meant to do.

The second story in this omnibus is "Against The Fall Of Night" which is an early version of the novel "The City And The Stars", and oddly enough, both novels have remained simultaneously in print ever since their creation.

Like "The Lion Of Comarre", the novel "Against The Fall Of Night" is another coming-of-age story, a story of the far, far future, and of mankind that has grown complacent in their near immortality. Only in this novel, things have become much, much worse. Alvin is the only child that has been born in seven thousand years, and he has become lonely as he has no real contemporaries, and intellectually restless.

Alvin starts to dig around in Diaspar's past, and to ask uncomfortable questions, such as, what is the world actually like beyond the walls of Diaspar. His curiosity, his questions, and his exploring of the, now abandoned, buildings that make up Diaspar's outskirts', is frowned upon. It's these building which are the only place in the city where a person can see the stars in the sky

Being the headstrong boy that he is, Alvin finds ways to find information about his inquiries, even if such information gathering is frowned on, and he is aided in his quest by his friend, the current Keeper of the Records, Rorden, who is also curious about Diaspar's past.

Alvin's journey only really takes off when he finds out that despite common knowledge and apathy, there is still another city on Earth that has been forgotten by the residents of Diaspar. It is the city Lys, and all passages to it have either been blocked, or hidden, so that those that wish to travel to it have to earn the right to travel there.

Even so, as Rorden points out to Alvin, even if they were to find one of the ways to get there, Alvin is simply not prepared to go. Alvin agrees, and so another journey is embarked on; the first, to find a passage to Lys and the second, to prepare himself for the journey, and as he prepares, Clarke shows Alvin becoming more and more aware of his surroundings, and as such, himself.

Essentially, both of these stories are thematically linked, as both Alvin and Richard are cut from the same cloth. Both are young men who are intellectually restless, curious, stubborn, and willing to endure hardships in the pursuit of information, and adventure, Never has rebellion seemed so respectful in the way that both will rebel against society, societal mores, and societal assumptions, and who will still find their place in the universe through their trials, adventure(s), and their revolutionary shake-ups of their home societies. Both have that wistful far-looking innocence, and romanticism, that pre-digest pulp science fiction, and science fiction prose often had. Here's an example of the prose that can be found in these books: "They watched in silence, and with them all the thousands in the streets and towers of Diaspar, until the last cloud slowly faded from sight, sucked dry by the hot, parched air of the unending deserts." It was for stuff like this that I first started reading science fiction.

Both stories also manage to find romance and wonder in mankind's decadence. Both of these stories were written and meant for John W. Campbell's "Astounding Stories", but were rejected, and would appear in one of science fiction's last great pulps, "Thrilling Wonder Stories" in 1949 and 1948, respectively, and this is probably for the best. While little known today by current science fiction readers, these two stories are time capsules of an earlier age, and a younger, and still learning, future science fiction master, and are full of wonder, and well worth rediscovering from time when sf wasn't all endless series, war and/or horror fiction.

A special notice should be taken of the cover, which, quite frankly, by all definitions, sucks. A chimpanzee throwing it's feces against a canvas could have done a better job.

For this site I have also reviewed these other science fiction books:

Beachheads in Space (selections) edited by August Derleth.
Fantasy Reader #1: Alien Carnival by Walt Liebscher.
Gravity (Wheeler Compass) by Tess Gerritsen.
Jemma7729 by Phoebe Wray.
The Science Fiction Hall of Fame, Vol. 1: 1929-1964 edited by Robert Silverberg.
Extraodinary Tales of Victorian Futurism: Steampunk edited by Mike Ashley.
Transit of Earth (Playboy Science Fiction) edited by Ray Russell.
Trouble With Tycho by Clifford D. Simak.

I have also reviewed these facsimile pulp magazine reprints:

Marvel Tales: December 1939.
Miracle Science and Fantasy Stories - 06-07/31 edited by Elliot Dold.
Out Of This World Adventures #2 (December 1950) edited by Donald A. Wollheim.
Planet Stories: Summer 1947 edited by Paul L. Payne.
Planet Stories: Winter 1949 edited by Paul L. Payne.
Startling Stories: January 1942 edited by Oscar J. Friend.

magic
By Theresa May
This novel was written a few years before I was born, and I found it as a teenager. I rediscovered it lately, and the magic that enchanted me all those years ago is still there. Arthur C Clarke had the magic, so had Tolkien, and one or two others I have read. You read it, and look out and the sky, and wonder.. And when you have the some reaction some forty years later, you know the book is special. So much better a story than 2001, the two can't even compare. If you are wishing for magic and wonderment, and the heartache of man's journey, wherever he is going, read this book.. and look up at the stars.

About the Author
When Katherine Anne Porter left her home state of Texas for New York, she brought with her the hard edge of a Western pioneer. Passionate and intelligent, it was this edge more than anything that made her name as a writer. Despite her self-imposed exile from her home and Southern background, Porter used this distance as a means of coming to terms with the memories she sought to escape. Born in India Creek, Texas in 1890, Katherine Anne Porter lost her mother at the age of two. Raised primarily by her paternal grandmother, Porter became strong and self-reliant at an early age. Both the loss of her mother and her father's subsequent neglect had a lasting effect on Porter-making her incredibly attentive to the harsh realities of the human endeavor. At age fifteen she married John Henry Koontz, the first of four husbands. Throughout her entire life she would continue to have passionate affairs marked by dramatic and vicious break-ups. She spent her early twenties moving from Texas to Chicago and back, working as an actress, a singer, and, later, a secretary. In 1917, after a battle with tuberculosis, Porter took a job as a society columnist for the Fort Worth CRITIC. Two years later she moved to Greenwich Village, where she began to work seriously as a fiction writer. Supporting herself with journalism and "hack" writing, Porter published her first story in CENTURY magazine. Though CENTURY provided her with a good sum for the story, Porter was rarely to return to popular magazine publishing, choosing instead the freedom of little magazines. A perfectionist concerned with controlling every word of her stories, Porter gained a name for her flawless prose. Often concerned with the themes of justice, betrayal, and the unforgiving nature of the human race, Porter's writings occupied the space where the personal and political meet. In 1930 her first book, FLOWERING JUDAS, was published by Harcourt Brace. Though a masterly collection of short stories, it met with only modest sales. It was not until almost ten years later that she published her second book, a collection of three short novels, PALE HORSE, PALE RIDER. She followed this in 1944 with THE LEANING TOWER AND OTHER STORIES. Concerning herself overtly with the rise of Nazism, Porter was able to further investigate the dark side of the average person. It was not, however, until nearly twenty years later that she was able to address the topic in greater depth

Tropicana Nights: The Life and Times of the Legendary Cuban Nightclub, by Rosa Lowinger, Ofelia Fox

At Tropicana you could play the roulette wheel, dance to the latest mambo or rumba, or simply ogle the parading goddesses of the flesh. It was the brightest jewel in 1950s Cuban nightlife, and Nat “King” Cole, Liberace, Josephine Baker, and Carmen Miranda performed there before audiences that included Ernest Hemingway, Marlon Brando, and Joan Crawford.   In Tropicana Nights, Rosa Lowinger and Ofelia Fox, widow of Martin Fox, the club’s last owner, take us back to its glory years. Ofelia, the “first lady” of Tropicana, shares her memories, undimmed by decades of exile, with Rosa Lowinger, also a Cuban exile, whose parents frequented the club in its heyday. Together, Lowinger and Fox vividly portray the cultural richness and roiling social problems of pre-Revolutionary Cuba and take the reader on a tour of one of the world’s most glamorous venues at its most brilliant moment.

From Publishers Weekly
Tropicana opened in 1939 at Villa Mina, a six-acre suburban Havana estate with lush tropical gardens. It's still going strong, after a number of setbacks, not the least of which was Fidel Castro's squelching of nightlife and other social outlets. After Martin Fox took over in 1950, choreographer Roderico "Rodney" Neyra staged spectacular shows in the club's newly constructed Arcos de Cristal, parabolic concrete arches and glass walls soaring over an indoor stage. Headliners included Josephine Baker, Nat King Cole, Celia Cruz, Xavier Cugat and Carmen Miranda; and celebrity visitors ranged from Brando and Durante to Hemingway and Piaf. Tracing the evolution of this "paradise under the stars" against the backdrop of Cuban culture, politics in pre-Castro Cuba and mob connections, journalist Lowinger (Latina) interweaves the personal stories of Fox and his widow, playwright-teacher Ofelia Fox, who recalls, "It was a life set to music. What could be better?" The superb talents of Cuban music's Golden Age were resurrected in the Oscar-nominated film Buena Vista Social Club (1998), but Lowinger's scintillating chronicle offers an overview—not found in that film—of the florid, splashy era when "Cuba was an endless party, and Tropicana was its epicenter." From Booklist
Lowinger and Fox tell the story of Havana's notorious Tropicana nightclub, the template from which Las Vegas was made after the corrupt Batista regime collapsed, and the Tropicana was closed. In its day the Tropicana was a prime site for gambling, elegance, seeing and being seen--a resort of choice for international gangsters and jet-setters. Readers who enjoyed Anthony Haden-Guest's "biography" of Studio 54, The Last Party (1997), will enjoy comparing the differing modes of showmanship, decadence, and ostentation current in the Tropicana's 1950s heyday to those of 1970s New York's debauched disco scene. Fox married Tropicana owner Martin Fox in 1952 and helped him run it until 1962, when they decamped to Miami. She and Lowinger take pains to establish that the Tropicana was hardly a sleazy Mob hangout but rather a world-class entertainment venue that discriminating gangsters happened to enjoy frequenting. An excellent resource on Cuban popular culture, lavish entertainment, and everyday life just before and just after Castro, this is also an exciting and rewarding read. Mike Tribby

PRAISE FOR TROPICANA NIGHTS "It may be hard to imagine a time . . . when ladies dressed in their finest frippery to take in an evening show over drinks with their beaux. You may not be able to relive those days (or you may be too young to recall them), but thanks to Tropicana Nights . . . you can pretend you were there."—Women’s Wear Daily

"Looks at a part of Cuban history through the most intoxicating of perspectives . . . [Tropicana Nights] paints a vivid picture of Havana’s heyday and transition into a communist economy."—Cigar Aficionado

A page-turning read....
By Carolina A. Miranda
You think you've read everything there is to read about Cuba, but you haven't--until you've picked up Tropicana Nights by Rosa Lowinger. This adeptly-written book chronicles the rise and eventual fall of Havana's most glamorous night club. The book follows the lives of its owners, Martin and Ofelia Fox, as they build their "paradise under the stars," with cameos by a veritable who's who of iconic entertainers: Carmen Miranda, Nat King Cole, Josephine Baker and Steve Allen. Woven into the story are sidebars on Cuban music, modernist architecture and regional politics, that, together, come to form a complete picture of Cuban culture in the 1950s. The book also follows Ofelia as she rebuilds her life from scratch in the United States following the Cuban revolution and Martin's death. It's an entertaining, page-turning read with a gripping, personal narrative. And it offers the most striking portrait yet of what it has meant to be Cuban in the twentieth century.

Inside the Legend of the World's Greatest Nightclub
By Three Guys from Miami
This fascinating book provides a never-before-seen insiders look at the creation and transformation of Cuba's legendary club, the Tropicana. The Tropicana wasn't just a nightclub and casino, it was a showcase for Cuban music and dance that helped spread Cuban culture internationally.

Anyone who has seen a big Las Vegas "spectacular" production should know that many of the elements we consider "Vegas style" were actually created at the Tropicana in the 1950s by the Tropicana's shrewd owner and the club's choreographer, Roderico "Rodney" Neyra.

The book is written by journalist Rosa Lowinger and Ofelia Fox, the widow of the club's last owner, Martín Fox. The book quite naturally revolves around Fox, a shrewd businessman who navigated the minefield of Cuban politics to create a fantastic entertainment venue that attracted visitors from all over the world.

So many books of this type are as about as engaging as an encyclopedia entry, but this one reads more like a novel. There's plenty of suspense, intrigue, romance, and a cast of characters -- some famous and some infamous -- that come to life in the author's detailed and poetic text.

The book includes a nice section of period photos, and is a compelling read. If you want to know more about Cuban culture in the '50's, this is a book that can't be missed.

Highly recommended.

Indescribably readable and informative
By Felix Peresechensky
An amazing story that transports you to Cuba of the 50s. It is informative and extremely entertaining. The descriptions of the shows, the dancers, the empresarios and most importantly the night club itself make you feel a part of it. Absolutely the next best thing to being there. Reads like a novel that you just can't put down.

Review
"We sometimes hear it said of an iconoclastic essayist like Mark Twain or Russell Baker that he is a 'national treasure.' I vote to include Barbara Holland in this treasure chest."-The Philadelphia Inquirer
"Though Holland obviously means what she writes, she also is having good fun, not merely mourning and celebrating what has been lost but also taking well-aimed whacks at inviting targets."-The Washington Post

Waste Land born by "Caesarian Operation", and mystery solved
By A Customer
Valerie Eliot's publication of her late husband's Waste Land manuscripts affords the reader an opportunity to delve beneath the mysteries surrounding this truly remarkable poem. Hailed as the "greatest poem of the 20th century", a masterpiece which "captured the disillusionment of a generation"; indeed, as the "justification" of Ezra Pound's modernist "experiment", yet referred to by Eliot, himself, as "just a piece of rythmical grumbling", the Waste Land is sure to spark off in any reader a burning desire to know more than Eliot's powerful words can ever themselves explain.
Written primarily during a "rest cure" on "Margate Sands" ("I can connect Nothing with Nothing") and Laussanne, Switzerland; following what Eliot's London doctor diagnosed as a "nervous breakdown", but which the poet refferred to in his letters as an "aboulie", or state of "emotional derangement"; it is little wonder that the poem is not an easy one to come to grips with. In the years following it's publication, countless readers and critics, following the "clues" left by the poet in his now infamous "Notes", have charged off in pursuit of answers and meanings in places they shall never be found. Eliot later explained to his friend, Pound, on whom the poet had bestowed the task (or honour, in this critic's opinion) of editing his original manuscript - that his "Notes" had done little more than lead his readers on a wild goosechase after holy grails and other crazy things which had little bearing on the poem itself. The fact that Pound, the editor, chose, and was permitted by the author, to slash out over half of the original Waste Land fragments in an operation which he described as the "Caesarian Operation" speaks volumes for itself. For it was in this operation that Pound's theories on Vortisism and Imagisme, and Eliot's own theories on poetic "impersonality" and committment to the "Great Tradition" were fused. The result - the final masterwork, the "cult" poem we know today. In the manuscript publication, the missing pieces to Eliot's inticate puzzle are at last to be found .If you are an Eliot fan, or have any interest whatsoever in the Modernist movement, or the inner workings of a creative genius' mind - this book is an absolute MUST !

All this crayon...
By Paul-John Ramos
'The Waste Land' is widely viewed as the twentieth century's most important English language poem, so it's no surprise that 'The Waste Land' manuscripts are some of the most fussed-about pieces of artistic construction in modern times. The poem is a short but dizzying string of images that needs every bit of clarification available.

'The Waste Land' manuscripts, which consist of fifty-four leaves, three hotel receipts, and a mailing label, were sold by T. S. Eliot to John Quinn, a New York attorney who served as his agent, in 1923. Quinn died the following year and Eliot's manuscripts were inherited by Julia Quinn Anderson, his sister. Mrs. Anderson died in 1934, after which the manuscripts were put in storage. Her daughter, Mary Anderson Conroy, recovered them and made a final sale in 1958 to the Berg Collection of the New York Public Library, where they currently reside. Eliot never knew about the sale and his estate was not informed until 1968, upon publication of a Quinn biography by Professor B. L. Reid.

'The Waste Land: A Facsimile and Transcript' is largely a collaboration between Valerie Eliot, T. S. Eliot's second wife, and poet Ezra Pound, who is credited with massaging 'The Waste Land' into its published form. Using the original manuscripts, correspondence, and research on literary workings of the poem, Mrs. Eliot and Mr. Pound have done much to elucidate where The Waste Land's ideas originally came from and how its manuscripts created issues over the poem's 'official' appearance.

The book, first published as a large-size hardcover by Harcourt Brace & Company in 1971, gives itself little fanfare and dives right into the poem's lengthy history. Pound chimes in with a short preface that acknowledges Mrs. Eliot's devotion, followed by a twenty-page introduction that charts the events in Eliot's personal and creative lives from 1915 to 1924. Mrs. Eliot bases the introduction primarily on letters written between Eliot, his family, Pound, and Quinn. It is soundly arranged, listing every step towards making 'The Waste Land' a published item.

The manuscript's fifty-four leaves are offered in facsimile, with each page transcripted to its right. The transcriptions reflect any changes or notations made by Eliot, Pound, and Eliot's first wife, Vivienne, who provided feedback intermittently. Pound's corrections are transcripted in red ink, Vivienne Eliot's in black ink with dotted lines. The leaves are arranged in sections corresponding to those of the final poem. Remarkable is how much verse was left on the cutting floor: 'The Burial of the Dead' stems from a long narrative poem, the infamous 'He Do the Police in Different Voices.' Its entire first part, a trite urban episode, went completely unused. The tiny section 'Death by Water' originated from a narrative of sea fishers, running over four hand-written pages.

To clarify ambiguous information such as titles, literary references, and Pound's codified markings, Mrs. Eliot has supplied editorial notes that are located after the facsimiles. The book's remaining pages contain 'The Waste Land' as published by Boni and Liveright in 1922, including Eliot's after-the-fact notes that were used as a critical reference for years, but which Eliot later called 'bogus scholarship.' These notes were originally written by Eliot to point out various sources, but he later expanded them needlessly to fill blank pages resulting from the poem's appearance as a book.

Mrs. Eliot's volume is highly informative and well-organized. It does much to elucidate the poem's inner workings and we learn a great deal about Eliot personally, something that he largely considered taboo. We see clearly how the poem took shape, with much-needed help from Pound and Vivienne Eliot. There are no longer any mysteries about how Eliot could piece together such contradictory material; whatever material did not reach publication gives added meaning to what the public eventually saw.

How literary sources relate to the poem is a different story, however. 'The Waste Land: A Facsimile and Transcript' does nothing to clarify what the poem actually means and, to be fair, Mrs. Eliot did not set out to do this. If a reader wants to find out the significance of Hindu Upanishads or what 'Tristan and Isolde' is about, there are plenty of good references, such as the Norton Critical Edition. 'A Facsimile and Transcipt' bases itself on the writing process, not on literary interpretation.

While a moot point, it's unfortunate that Vivienne Eliot was never consulted about the poem. The first Mrs. Eliot spent her remaining years in a sanatorium (she died in 1947), having been committed for mental problems. A great deal of knowledge about the poem died with her, especially since 'The Waste Land' is discreetly autobiographical. Despite her intimate knowledge of the writer, Valerie Eliot has assembled this book while at a sizeable distance from the poem's origins.

Regardless, 'The Waste Land' is a stunning collage of imagery whose deeper meanings were carried by T. S. Eliot to his grave and, if his beliefs are true, to the world beyond. Certain mysteries surrounding this poem will never be clarified; but this facsimile edition at least offers some hope of uncovering whatever meanings the poem contains. It is essential reading for admirers of Eliot's poetry and a wealth of information for scholars, who should already know about it by now.

From the Back Cover
This internationally famous poem, considered to have exerted a wide influence on modern poetry, was first introduced to English-language readers in the translation by T.S. Eliot. In his Preface, Eliot describes it as "a series of images of migration" in the vast spaces of the ancient East and ranks it as "a piece of writing of the same importance as the later work of James Joyce."

This is the definitive edition, published with the French and English texts on facing pages. In addition to the Preface by Eliot it includes translations of prefaces to three European editions of the work, by Hugo von Hofmannsthal, Valery Larbaud, and Giuseppe Ungaretti.

"A poem of vast dimensions, impersonal as the sea journeys of Homer."--Archibald MacLeish
By Dawson C. Smith
Of all the poetry produced during the twentieth century two poems stand at the pinnacle, and this is one of them. "The Waste Land," by T. S. Eliot, is the other. "Anabasis" was written by St.-John Perse, the pen name of Alexis Leger, in 1924. It was translated from the French by T. S. Eliot in 1930, a revised translation coming out in 1949. Perse was awarded the Nobel prize for Literature in 1960.

The Greek word "anabasis" means a march up-country, from the coast to the interior. Given the poem's setting one may be forgiven for thinking of Xenophon's "Anabasis." The word was also used by Plato in his allegory of the cave to depict the journey from the darkness of ignorance to the light of knowledge.

From Eliot's introduction:
"The poem is a series of images of migration, of conquest of vast spaces in Asiatic wastes, of destruction and foundation of cities and civilizations of any races or epochs of the ancient East."

An excerpt from the poem:
"Milch-camels, gentle beneath the shears, sewn with mauve scars, let the hills march forth under the facts of the harvest sky--let them march in silence over the pale incandescence of the plain; and kneeling at last, in the fantasy of dreams, there where the peoples annihilate themselves in the dead powder of earth."

Whereas Eliot, in his poem, portrays the modern world as a wasteland, the result of a loss of faith, Perse, in his, gives us a picture of the ancient world, beautiful and barbaric.

Note: I have on the shelf three versions of Anabasis. The first two are Eliot's initial translation of 1930, published by Faber & Faber Limited of London and the 1949 revision, published by Harcourt, Brace and Company, New York. The third rendition is Perse's 1959 emendation of the 1949 translation, done without Eliot's participation, published by Faber & Faber, London. The one to have is the revision of 1949. This is the version currently available in paperback from Harcourt Brace Jovanovich.

A Colt Was Born Beneath the Bronze Leaves
By Laurie
St.-John Perse was perhaps the most ambitious and the greatest poet of the 20th century. His astonishing long-lined poems comprehend childhood, nature, the sciences, ancient civilisations, Asia.

"Anabase" is his best-known and most perfect work . The outline is clear: voyage of exploration and founding of a city in some exotic semi-barbarous civilisation. But the details can be hard to unravel. Perse arrived at his dazzling but difficult style by leaving things out, - the reader must supply many missing links, - and this accounts for its magical swiftness and surprise. (You can acclimatise yourself by reading the early "Éloges," where this style is still half-formed: you'll find them in the "Penguin Book of 20th Century Verse.") He also has the widest vocabulary of any French poet and a taste for the most confounding similes: the rain pursues travelling nomads "like a poll-tax."

Eliot's famous translation has a slightly prissy, affected quality which is alien to the original: but then, Perse's unabashed high-flown patrician eloquence has no English equivalent. So don't be put off by the obscurity: enjoy the gorgeous language and allow it to gradually make sense by itself. As a sample, try Section Ten with its kaleidoscopic lists outdoing Walt Whitman. I have been re-reading this poem for 30 years and it still amazes and delights me.

A modern treasure!
By Bill Given
The English edition of this book offers not only what is one of the most worthwhile pieces of poetry the 20th century has to offer to 21st century readers, but also a work that may serve as a standard to anyone looking to locate an example of a classic that survives the often deadly process of translation, for whom here we may thank T.S. Eliot, -- the edition prints the French language on the facing page, so that readers may trace what little poetic liberties the latter has taken in order to deliver across mountains and rivers, -- resembling the nomadic journey of St.-John Perse's epique, -- of language-scapes crossed . . . Mr. Eliot deserves our esteem for this feat if nothing else, to have retained that essence of "a great principle of violence", or rather that "essence" of the journey described in this book which is really not so much one of plot, character, or any emotional developement in the specific sense, but one of a progression of language . . . certainly the distinction is difficult to articulate, I mean that one existing between the emotional evolution and the progression of language, FEELING, essence, -- but that is what is so worthwhile about this book, in fact fascinating, to me, because it describes exactly this very experience, -- in that it reads as a kind of separate history, it describes the essence of man in history apart from any historical reference, apart from any identification that makes what the book describes HUMAN at all . . . we see a man here that is not a man at all except anatomically, as we would in focusing on the ancient cultures of South and Central America (Chavin, Olmecs, etc.), Egypt, China, and so on, they are only men as we are men today by an anatomical relationship. Thus this book reveals to us a sense of being, as men, that is largely lost in our modern day, and in the form of purely pleasurable poetry . . . so many lines in this books seem to sum up the entire statement of the entire vision, as if they could easily exist alone in fragments, say when our own culture has long passed to the dust of a long time's ravaging, and say all that the book builds from those lines together. I highly recommend this book, not so much for my own reasons, which are certainly a crock of my own reflection, but for your own. This is a book that speaks, there are few that do so, it is a book one can hear without reading. Mr. Eliot called it "as important as the later works of James Joyce", -- I would never give it so unworthy a comparison as that, -- I mean that this book is simply CAPABLE of more, Joyce is one thing, but this book, like Egyptian hieroglyphs, can be so much more. In terms of history, this is a book worth digging up.
