The Universe And Mankind Are Both Evolving Towards Perfection

Ursula King's biography of Teihard de Chardin is a fascinating book written in a style which makes a difficult subject seem quite understandable. King weaves the story of Teihard's life around snapshots of his constantly maturing vision of God, the universe and mankind.

Known for his original concepts such as the ongoing evolution of both the universe and mankind towards perfection and the existence of a global network of self-awareness, Teihard was always regarded as a loose canon by the Vatican. Consequently, not much of his work was released during his lifetime except for those relatively few items which were privately published and distributed among a circle of his friends. Since his death in 1955 all his books and essays have been made available to the general public. Teihard nurtured close, supportive relationships with a small number of caring females and left many letters which reveal the importance of these women in his life.

Although at times he is difficult to comprehend, there is no doubt that Teihard ranks as one of the most prominent thinkers of the twentieth century. The fact that he is recognized as a famous and respected scientist as well as a mystic, greatly increases his significance.

When the writing had to stop

This volume covers the final five years of Virginia's life, active and as diligent (and as disrespectful) as ever. "Here we are again," she writes in 1936, "involved in the usual uproar of politics, society, Indians, niggers, poets [and] Ethel Smyth". She wonders why David Copperfield is such a marvellous book and Dickens such a dislikeable man. The letters pour out unceasingly, recording (among other things) her uphill struggle to complete The Years and her biography of Roger Fry. There's a trip to France in 1937 and to Skye in 1938 and frequent visits to London but her time is spent, increasingly, at Monks House, her home in Sussex. By degrees some of the zest disappears, although she's gleeful at the reaction which Three Guineas produces on the Cambridge elite, headed by F.R. Leavis and his wife - "Oh, I've had such a drubbing and a scourging [from them] .... I'm a disgrace to my sex: and a caterpillar on the community. I thought I should raise their hackles - poor old strumpets." Work begins on Between the Acts - but the advent of the Second World War and the bombing of London deeply depresses her. A brief epistolary flirtation with G.B. Shaw in May 1940 revives her spirits. The biography of Fry finally complete, she contemplates her long-planned history of English literature. There is still so much to be done! And then, almost on the spur of the moment, she decides that it is impossible to continue. "I want to tell you that you have given me complete happiness," she writes to Leonard, her husband, assuring him that he will get on better without her, before walking to the River Ouse and (practical to the last) filling her pockets with stones. The loss, both to him and to us, is almost immeasurable. But thank goodness these letters survive.

Gilbert Law Summaries: Criminal Law

This is an excellent book. It is clear and easy to read. Of all the material that we are using in my law school, this one is the most information dense. In fact, it condences information from the lectures, casebook, and handouts from class.

We are told to concentrate on the casebook and what those cases illustrate, but it isn't until I get to the Gilbert Summary that I actually understand the issues clearly. Because of a slow start, I changed my angle of attack to the materials I'm using in class.

The summary was assigned as reading *after* the casebook, but it's become my first reading, and in so doing, I have a grasp of the material before we even discuss it. The cases are so large a body of reading that some of the finer points tend to get lost as you are learning new ones.

Don't make the mistake I did of thinking the summary was redundant and not necessary (particularly if you're getting behind on the reading, which you unvariably will from time to time), because if you don't read it and depend on your casebook only, you will miss the better and finer points under all that language.

This was a big mistake for me, because it was only when I read the summary that I actually "got it". You can read tons of cases to gleen maybe a dozen ideas that Gilbert puts together in one section.

I have a background in law enforcement and am trying to make the transition to practicing law, and it is very refreshing to see obscure and current changes in law illustrated clearly in this book. It is current and up to date, even with information my own professor is rusty on. This and the Casenote Legal Briefs have saved me untold times.

I am so satisfied with the information in this book, and how it's layed out, that I am using it as a guide for my personal outline.

Even if you're not in law school, for anyone entering related fields, this is an outstanding book.

Crash Course on Crimes

I left first year criminal law a little underwhelmed. After a lifetime of Law & Order, I just assumed that a law school crimes class would overwhelm me. But when class ended - and I felt normal - I figured I must have missed something.

This book put criminal law into prospective and made it a little clearer. It's pretty much in outline form, with some memory aides, and a lot of sample questions (essay and multiple choice). What I found helpful, though, was that it found a way to be concise while still be thorough.

The reality is that Criminal Law class really isn't that intense. You'll cover murder, privileges, common law crimes, and perhaps some of the Model Penal Code changes. Other study aides I've seen however, are overly long and unnecessarily complex. Criminal Law isn't that complicated. And this book makes no bones about it.

The bottom line is that if you are looking for a criminal law study aide, this is a fine book to go with.

I am not happy with this product. I ordered, and paid for, a NEW book! This book was dingy, and smelled as if it had been in a garage or cellar for a long time. It was damp and the pages smelled of mildew. I am not exaggerating. I'm thinking of putting some Febreeze on it, as I'm just hoping the smell is not harming my health. I'm a law student, and I needed this book fast - so I have to keep it, and use it. But clearly, I'm not satisfied. And unless, the seller, fixes this and sends me another book that is (in fact) new. I will NOT recommend using this seller to anyone of my fellow students, friends, colleagues or co-workers.

How humanity copes

The three long stories that comprise this book at first appear to have been slapped together without much concern for whether they work well with one another. Not only were they written at different points in Calvino's career -- "The Watcher" is from 1963, "Smog" from 1958 and "The Argentine Ant" from 1952, but they don't even get the continuity that a single translator might have been able to provide. That's why it's so surprising that a common theme in these works emerges anyway -- namely, that existence is futile and farcical and yet also must be cherished because, in the end, what else is there?
The protagonists of these stories are all seeking ways to somehow make the futility bearable or even meaningful. "The Watcher" portrays Amerigo Ormea, an election observer assigned to a polling place that is actually a mental institution. Amerigo's long-held political convictions are, if not wavering, then at least punch-drunk from having been slapped around so much. The momentous changes once foreseen by him have not materialized, and as a result he is trying to believe that change is a gradual and even mundane process, a matter of "doing as much as you could, day by day." Calvino uses the asylum and its inhabitants a metaphor for democratic society and its odd creatures. In doing so he displays a keen talent for showing up grand arguments like whether democracy is viable for the absurd squabbles they may be at their core -- like whether a ballot sheet has been properly folded, or whether an armless man's vote counts if someone has to go into the voting booth with him. Amerigo struggles to accept that such grotesque banality is the very stuff of democracy. This struggle is sometimes involving and insightful and sometimes not. The force of the story is somewhat blunted by too many philosophical musings on Calvino's part. He may mean to send up the diehard's tendency toward philosophical musings, but they are droning and often repetitive and not particularly exciting to read. Nevertheless, "The Watcher" has a lot to offer. In the other two stories, the main characters also must persevere in the face of circumstances they cannot control. "Smog" demonstrates an acute awareness of environmental peril that seems somewhat ahead of its time. But as in "The Watcher," Calvino's chief concern is how humanity copes. The main character has just moved to the city and is overwhelmed by its filth. He washes his hands compulsively as he observes how the urbanites deal with a dirty fog that is intensifying its grip on the city. One man simply makes the filth a part of himself, living and breathing it with hardly a thought. Another, a factory owner and the worst polluter in the city, tries to redeem himself by funding "The Institute for the Purification of the Urban Atmosphere in Industrial Centers." A worker in one of his factories "didn't try to evade all the smoky gray around us, but to transform it into a moral value, an inner criterion."
Smog is substituted by ants in "The Argentine Ant." A young couple moves into a new home only to find that it -- and the homes of all their neighbors -- infested with millions of the unstoppable insects. The young husband goes neighbor to neighbor in search of a solution. One has a garageful of insecticides and chemicals, and a chuckling anecdote explaining the failure of each one. Another man rigs elaborate deathtraps out of string and gasoline. The woman who rents the houses out simply denies that the ants are a problem even as they bite her on the buttocks and crawl up her back. The town regularly sends out an exterminator, but the residents are convinced he is actually feeding the ants as a way of keeping his job. In both "Smog" and "The Argentine Ant," no one thinks to simply leave. There seems to be a tacit agreement among them that moving would only exchange one problem for another. Calvino's characters are inescapably grounded where they find themselves, learning to live with that which they find unbearable.
This book provides ample evidence of Calvino's skill and vision. It is definitely a worthwhile read.

Not his best

The Watcher and Other Stories is a collection of three of Calvino's stories put together in a single volume for no obvious reason other than they are by the same author. As a fan of Calvino's work, I have to admit that this is the closest I've come to describing one of his books as "tedious." However, in each story Calvino still wields his pen with an imagination that few can even come close to matching. Each narrative effectively brings the reader to a different world filled with well-rounded characters and unique circumstances--most notably an ant-infested neighborhood.

While not the most engrossing of Calvino's works, The Watcher and Other Stories is still worth picking up for fans of the breathtakingly creative author.

Nice Collection

The Watcher and Other Stories is a collection of three different but thematically interlinked stories. I personally thought that the title story was the most intriguing. The Watcher deals with our protagonist "watching" the voting procedures in a home for invalids/deranged/etc. The home is a mini city and becomes a type of microcosm of Italian society. Smog deals again with the futility of human life through pollution. The Argentine Ants is a type of mock horror story. All of the above are extremely well written and executed. Although I did enjoy this book, I would suggest that readers unfamiliar with Calvino try some of his masterpieces first, and then move onto the minutiae of works such as these.

Still relevant after all these years...

THE GROUP was published when I was very young, however, I was aware the book had created quite a stir because my Republican, Roman Catholic father and Democratic Protestant mother had many heated arguments over its content--which includes discussions about childrearing, hetero and homosexuality, mental illness and psycholanalysis, body functions, and Communist-party affiliation.
I have finally read Mary McCarthy's book and found it absolutely wonderful. Having completed it, I feel I understand my mother and aunts a little better. They were of the same genertion as Polly, Libby, Lakey, Kay, and the other eight Vasser graduates who are the protagonists of the book. Although my relatives attended state colleges in Wisconsin, I was exposed to "thinking" women who for the most part lived lives comparable to the women depicted in THE GROUP. All but one of my aunts married, and she became an "old maid school teacher." Some of my uncles were more liberal than others, but all of the men including my father had expectations about how their wives should conduct themselves after marriage and motherhood. I came of age at the tail end of this oppressive period when women were still called girls.
As we read about the oppression of women in other parts of the world today, I cannot help but wonder if younger men and women can fully appreciate how recently civil rights have been extended to U.S. and European women. It's so easy to discount feminists but without the resumption of the Woman's Movement in the late 1950s and 1960s, a husband like Harald might still be able to have his wife Kay committed to a psychiatric hospital if she defended herself from his drunken attack.
THE GROUP covers the years 1933 to 1940--it begins just after the stock market crash and the beginning of the Great Depression and ends with England on the verge of invasion from the Nazis. The book was described as a "gem of American social history" by 'The Nation' but it is also a very good read. (Supposedly, McCarthy based her characters on friends from her Vassar days, so one never knows how much is really fiction.)
Reading this book, I found myself outraged and sad and laughing out loud. The discussions about child rearing are enough to make you hoot -- especially if you have been exposed to the "bottle versus breast" battle. As the victim of parents like Priss and Sloan who read entirely too much literature, I went onto subject my children to the techniques of Dr. Spock, and am now am amused by the current thinking of my daughter and daughter-in-law who also read child-rearing literature and attend discussions and are struggling with potty-training and aggressive behaviour. If you have ever raised children or are trying to raise children you will enjoy the exchanges between parents and spouses and friends in this book.
The passages describing mental illness caused me react with everything from laughter to impotent rage. Polly's father is resentful because his melancholia has been rediagnosed as manic-depression -- only he's never had the manic experience. Polly's obsession with her psychoanalysis is familiar. Kay's incarceration in the "looney bin" and description of the several floors of the mental hospital dedicated to recovery--from the seventh floor lock-up with padded cells to the fourth floor "just like a college dorm" from whence the cured patient depart--is frightful. This is a great book. Don't let its publication date fool you, it's as salient today as it was the day it was written.

Satire of 8 women who grad from Vassar, 1933

This upper-class New England satire of the post-college lives of 8 women has definitely stood the test of time. I read it maybe 30 years ago and just reread it: it still works, and at my present age, I find myself appreciating McCarthy's superb writing on an entirely new level. Each of the women comes from a different background, has widely different experiences both in Vassar and after graduation, and sees her world after college thru different eyes. Told mostly thru the point of view of one member of the group, McCarthy's classic story lacerates socialism, the Ivy League, the prevalent double standards of the era, men - and psychoanalysis. Is there anything she doesn't excoriate with her talented tongue. Um, no, I don't think she's missed a thing.

Always Delightful, Always Fun

Along with the more lurid and admittedly trashy "Valley Of The Dolls" and "Peyton Place," this was one of the seminal books of my youth. What is interesting now is that while the two aforementioned titles have become icons of sorts--'Valley' as a sort of feminist treatise, "Peyton Place" as socio-anthropological cant, go figure-- Mary McCarthy's "The Group" has sort of been relegated to a forgotten spot on the bookshelf, which is a shame since it is a far better book than one may realize. I hardly think the book today would have become the best seller it did, as the writing is too detailed and meticulous in comparison with what passes for much of popular fiction today. And those who made it a best seller in its day I am not so sure grasped what McCarthy was doing; instead they focused on the sensationalist exploration of then oft verboten feminine topics that are prominent in the book--everything from menstruation to birth control. What "The Group" gave me at sixteen was a yearning for the pseudo sophisticated New York world beyond my banal small town suburban upbringing; I longed, like Libby, to take the literary world by storm. At the time, of course, I took it all VERY seriously. Thirty years later, I now realize how brilliantly Mary McCarthy was playing everyone--herself, the girls of Vassar, her entire generation and the American reading public--for a bunch of fools. For what is apparent at the end of the novel is that, for all the advantages of wealth and education these women had, they are no better off emotionally (though they are economically) than their contemporaries who did not go to college, Vassar or otherwise. A very daring approach to take, one I am not sure was or would have been appreciated at the time. But now, as we move into the twenty first century, and the 30's become ever more distant, "The Group" can now be recognized for the brilliant satire it is, as well as a detailed evocation of manners, mores, styles, and a New York that hardly exists anymore. It remains even more one of my favorite books, and one's enjoyment of it only improves with age.

About the Author

ANTOINE DE SAINT-EXUPÉRY, the "Winged Poet," was born in Lyon, France, in 1900. A pilot at twenty-six, he was a pioneer of commercial aviation and flew in the Spanish Civil War and World War II. His writings include The Little Prince, Wind, Sand and Stars, Night Flight, Southern Mail, and Airman's Odyssey. In 1944, while flying a reconnaissance mission for his French air squadron, he disappeared over the Mediterranean.

A fascinating account of flight by a superb author

I bought this book on a wet Cornish holiday in '63 because it had a crude scrawl of an aeroplane on the cover, and I like flight. I little dreamed that by pure chance I had picked up a masterpiece, but I had. St. Exupery was one of those superb freaks that - all too infrequently - nature can produce: a man of action with the mind of a philospher and the soul of a poet, with the ability to express them all with lucid clarity.
He was said to be a terrible pilot, and intellectuals will pooh-pooh his 'metaphysics'. Forget that. When he disappeared, flying reconnaisance over the Med. during the war, we more normal mortals lost a marvellous example of how fine humans can be when given the chance, and humanity lost one of its graces. He was only forty or so, and had he lived he would have been recognised as one of the greats both of literature and of cultivated thought. As it is we have only these few little jewels of books by which we can appreciate his qualities and perhaps realise that we, too, can be so much better than we are.
'Flight to Arrass' is an account of a reconnaisance flight over occupied France, probably based on his personal experience, first at high altitude, then lethally low. In this extraordinary pilot-writer's mind, potential sudden death becomes transmuted into a magical account of memories which provide beauty, humour and wisdom, and his extraordinary ability as a writer puts you in the pilot's seat as you have never been before. You live with him the peril of being there, and you enter the wonderful world of his mentality in his detached response to terror and imminent abrupt extinction. All his books give you immediate access to a world of experiences which you otherwise will never meet, seen through eyes of unique maturity and intelligence.
Listen, in the same way that flowers are their own best advertisement, St. Ex's books are their own best recommendation. For me, 'Flight to Arrass' is one of his best, and it will cost you less than a cheap lunch. You owe yourself contact with this better example of humanity. The work of the translator in the case of St. Ex. is also as near perfection as you will find - A pleasure to read. If you have not read any of his books, then lucky you, in that this magical world as seen through his eyes is waiting all fresh for your discovery. Don't wait. Buy it now. I recommend it to you.

Written with great style...

This is an intellectually emotional musing of a pilot while on a reconnaisance mission in the midst of the hopeless Battle of France in the summer of 1940. Do not expect graphic descriptions of air combat, for only one eventful, though dangerous mission was told, interspersed by Saint-Ex's recollection of the human virtues and the war itself.
In this work he delves with clear logic about life and the meaning of life, of loyalty, love of country, the meaning and feeling of facing mortal danger while looking through his life in one slow kaleidoscope.
It is easy to see the prevailing athmosphere of defeatism that have enveloped France, and his writing was no exception, though justified. France cannot go it alone, with its 40 million against the 80 million (population) across the Rhine, and how the way of life that predominate in his country differs from its more industrial neighbor.
One of the great modern French stylist, Saint-Ex must have given headaches to the translator, for he wrote in a lyric poetic fashion difficult to translate (this is the Lewis Galantiere translation). One must pose occasionally to savor his prose. Here in colorful intensity he lays down in vivid detail his humanity and shows what made his writing different from other aviation literature. His popularity is such that people sometimes stresses the "Saint" in his name in order to prop him higher than the rank of hero worship. But his life does not fit that image. A man of many talents---cardplayer, mathematician, caricaturist, chess player, poet, writer and of course, aviator---he was however a baffling personality who defied straight description: A gifted mathematician, he rejected that intellectual circle; a man who likes action, he hated to exercise; one of the great writers of France, he did not wish to be a professional writer; a skeptic, he wanted to believe in God.
There are critics who described his writing as sentimental hogwash, the harbinger of hollow ideas, the man who can "replace the human brain with an aeroplane engine", et al..but his writings displayed (in this reviewer's modest opinion) a noble image, and for good or bad, he must be judged in the end by what he wrote. The sale of his books speaks for itself.
This is a highly recommended reading experience.

excellent philosophy and a look at a slice of history

the book is st.-ex's thoughts and reflections as he flies a suicide recon mission during WW2. it is not an action novel, but does have some exiting parts to it. it is a thoughtful look at life. the book is not just an interesting look into the mind of someone on a doomed mission, but is motivating, thougth provoking and insightful, and has some great lines to live by. i liked it better than his other book wind, sand and stars, and my copy is all marked up and highlighted and i refer back to it often. i would reccommend this book without hesitation.

An excellent biography

I've admired Fitzgerald all my life and regard his work as singularly underrated as time goes on. He was a brilliant and witty writer who could turn a phrase as well as any American author of the 20th century. This biography is the best I've ever read on Fitzgerald. It's particularly strong in the depiction of his gaudy, booze-soaked life with Zelda, especially when they were ex-pats living in France. Bruccoli really draws the reader in with deft descriptions of their marital rows, woes, break-ups and innumerable reconcilations. I was happy to see that their daughter, Scottie, was also illuminated so brilliantly.
The material on Sheila Graham, Scott's lover in Hollywood, was also intriguing. Graham's own book about Scott is a great read, but the author brings out elements to the story which Graham omitted. I was genuinely sad when Scott dies and the narrative concludes. The debauchery, booze and high times of the Flapper era are all here. This is a highly recommended, beautifully tribute to one of the great writers of the past 100 years.

Some Kind of Wonderful

I am an absolute diehard fan of F. Scott Fitzgerald, both his life and his literature. So, I knew when I purchased this book I was bound to scrutinize its every nook and cranny. Well, my scrutiny proved to be a wasted effort. Without question, Matthew Bruccoli is the number one Fitzgerald scholar in the country, and after reading this biography, it is impossible to question why.
Bruccoli covers every aspect of Fitzgerald's life and includes several bits of correspondence to really give readers a look inside Fitzgerald's thinking. --Perhaps my favorite thing about the book is that it does not sentimentalize the author (which I myself have a habit of doing). Fitzgerald is spelled out here in all his glory, yet, we also get to see his unflattering side...paranoia, arrogance, unharnessed alcoholism, and downright neurosis.
F Scott Fitzgerald was a brilliant man whose life became legend. It is my humble opinion that Bruccoli has written the most thorough and best possible biography. Simply put, the read is fascinating. It might be 600 pages, but you will fly through it. It is "never dry" (like Fitzgerald :)) and always entertaining. For Fitzgerald fanatics like myself, this book is a must, but I am convinced that anyone who takes to "human interest" stories would find themselves engulfed in its pages.
Also recommended: "The Romantic Egoists"...a scrapbook collection put together concerning the lives of the Fitzgeralds. It is packed with pictures and is a wonderful companion to the biography. It was also published by Bruccoli.

In it, not only will you find the novel itself, but you will also find various supplementary materials that help to ease you into what this novel is and what it means to so many different people. From those whose experience began with trying to impress a girl (and the lucky happenstance of finding the book at a Book-Mobile) to those who fought off the strains of absinthe addiction, the short pieces in range from essays to the first `draft' of the novel `Mrs Dalloway's Party'. Include in this assortment such lovingly-crafted emulations as Jane Mansfield's `The Garden Party' and you've got yourself a real winning combination.

But is this a good reason to buy this book? Don't you need more reasons? Of course!

Take this one: I knew absolutely nothing about Virginia Woolf when I purchased this book. She lived about 100 years ago. She wrote many books and I've seen some of her diaries in the hands of female students when I was in high school about ten years ago. She is popular with the intelligent-female group, those who want to be well-read and know the difference between Mary Wollstonecraft and Mary Shelley. Add to this that I am a guy. Now, take all that and combine it, dashing in the fact that this book single-handedly introduced me to who Virginia Woolf is and what she stood for- just through the supplementary material- and you have not only a great novel but a good place to get your foot into the door of this wonderful writer.

Is that still not enough? Okay: supplementary material aside, how is the book? Wonderful. It is a style of writing that I've heard called `Impressionistic' by some learned person. This is true- until you read Virginia Woolf (who is far easier to understand than other stream-of-consciousness writers such as Joyce) you have no idea what great pictures such simple things as words can express. Mrs Dalloway does this too, moving the reader through a simple narrative that is painted with poetical words, bringing to life a novel that is to fiction what Renoir is to painting; only the basic outline is there, amid all the broad strokes, and you must look to find it...but it is amazing when you see it.

Bottom line: If you know nothing about Virginia Woolf and want a good, solid platform from which to start, pick this one. If you know a lot about her and want to explore more, you pick this one too.

Woolf is not easy, but this book makes her easier

Francine Prose's Mrs. Dalloway Reader makes the enigmatic and brilliant Virginia Woolf's masterpiece and bit easier for us modern readers. Since the publication of Cunningham's spectacular The Hours and the movie titled the same, Woolf's writing has undergone a renaissance, rising once again on bestseller lists everywhere. But she's STILL difficult, with the loooong sentences, endless paragraphs, the convoluted windings of words and thoughts and phrases and explanations and descriptions and disclaimers with which her writing is rife.
This book is the missing link. It includes the complete text of Mrs. Dalloway and Mrs. Dalloway's Party, plus relevant journal entries and letters by Virginia Woolf relating to the creation of Mrs. Dalloway. Also included are essays and reviews by other writers, all about Mrs. Dalloway. Taken all together, these snippets function like a lovely roadmap into not only the character of Mrs. Dalloway, but into the mind of her creator.

Serious Readers Steer Clear!

Virginia Woolf's modernist classic "Mrs. Dalloway" has attracted a substantial body of commentary since its publication in 1925. The present volume entitled "The Mrs. Dalloway Reader" contains the full text of the novel itself, and a number of Woolf's short stories including "Mrs Dalloway's Party" which amounts to Woolf's first attempt at Chapter one of the novel it subsequently inspired. The selection of articles which completes the volume is something of a literary mixed bag. While some of the material is from the journals of Woolf herself, and therefore of particular interest and critical merit, other articles and fragments are less directly related to the text.
So, why buy a "reader" in the first place, instead of just the stand-alone novel? Presumably to have the experience of a landmark work of fiction in its own right, as well as to explore the illuminating thoughts of a variety of minds suitably equipped for the task of intelligent criticism. A laudable aspiration of course, but in the present instance, one that is hardly likely to be met.
Not even one of Woolf's high-flying literary contemporaries manages to do her novel justice. E. M. Forster's essay on the early novels of Virginia Woolf may be an attempt to contextualise "Mrs Dalloway" within a proto-Woolfian cadre, but it actually manages to spend much more time on the other novels it discusses than on the actual subject of this volume. The wandering discussion offered by Daniel Mendelsohn in "Not Afraid of Virginia Woolf" suffers from a sustained lack of focus, struggling as it does to explore the relationships between "The Hours", "Mrs. Dalloway", and "A Room of One's Own". That it is interspersed with sundry unilluminating literary and cinematic references further disperses its faltering focus.
But there's more! Michael Cunningham's "First Love" amounts to nothing more than a vacuous and self-indulgent trifle, while Sigrid Nunez, in her ominously titled "On Rereading Mrs. Dalloway" underlines for us the dangers of hyper-critical reflection and over-intellectualisation in the re-reading process. One truly hopes that she will now fulfil her promise of leaving Woolf's fiction alone and concentrating on her non-fiction. This may possibly mean that "Mrs Dalloway" could remain safe from at least one self-important literary iconoclast.
Clearly, the ironically named Francine Prose who edited this misguided volume was hard up for publishable material. Why else would we have to endure Elaine Showalter's tedious "Invigorating Life" which manages - wait for it - not to make a single mention of "Mrs Dalloway", but instead to concern itself entirely with Woolf's "A Room of One's Own"? Shouldn't that one have made it into the "A Room of One's Own Reader", or did that already contain too many misplaced articles on "Mrs Dalloway"?
In the midst of this mindless morass, there are few gems to justify the publication of a "reader" such as this. Certainly, Deborah Eisenberg's "On Mrs. Dalloway" is a largely mature and intelligent discussion, though rather too brief to do itself full justice; and Elissa Schappell manages in "That Sort of Woman" to personalise her ideas on the text, though hers is ultimately a self-centred narrative which, for anyone truly interested in Woolf's "Mrs Dalloway", must fail to satisfy.
I am a little surprised that Harcourt would run the risk of damaging their academic credibility with a volume as unsatisfying as this. A Mrs. Dalloway reader it really aint! Perhaps it might have been less of an exercise in false advertising, if the publishers had taken a leaf out of the Pythons' book and called it "The Not Exactly a Mrs Dalloway Reader but Something Remotely Approaching It", for what we have here is surely a sheep in Woolf's clothing.
