More delights from Thurber's crazy world
By David L Rattigan
The Thurber Carnival is really the must-have offering from the Thurber canon, but this book has some delights of its own. His assessment of the psychology behind his cartoons for The New Yorker is typical Thurber, the man at his sharpest. His gallery of wildlife sketches is as believable as it is ridiculous (his portrait of a gloat standing by a patch of I-told-you-sos being just one example).

An Undervalued Treasure
By Anne Mills
One of the best books by James Thurber, who has to my mind become one of the great undervalued writers of 20th century America. He is perhaps best known now for his cartoons, of which several of the most famous (including "All right, have it your way -- you heard a seal bark") are in this book. But he was also a masterful writer of short stories, humorous sketches, and essays on a wide range of topics. This book includes several of each, including the series of five essays on soap opera he wrote for the New Yorker in the late 1940's. Thurber's writing is as supple and spare as his cartoons, and his humor profound.

The Whistling Season, by Ivan Doig

Novelist Ivan Doig revisits the American west in the early twentieth century, bringing to life the eccentric individuals and idiosyncratic institutions that made it thrive.

“Can't cook but doesn't bite." So begins the newspaper ad offering the services of an "A-1 housekeeper, sound morals, exceptional disposition" that draws the attention of widower Oliver Milliron in the fall of 1909. That unforgettable season deposits the ever-whistling Rose Llewellyn and her font-of-knowledge brother, Morris Morgan, in Marias Coulee along with a stampede of homesteaders drawn by the promise of the Big Ditch—a gargantuan irrigation project intended to make the Montana prairie bloom. When the schoolmarm runs off with an itinerant preacher, Morris is pressed into service, setting the stage for the "several kinds of education"—none of them of the textbook variety—Morris and Rose will bring to Oliver, his three sons, and the rambunctious students in the region's one-room schoolhouse. A paean to a way of life that has long since vanished, The Whistling Season is Ivan Doig at his evocative best.

From Publishers Weekly
[Signature]Reviewed by Rick BassAny writer's work should be judged solely on its own merits, yet in this fine novel by Ivan Doig, one may be forgiven for marveling at the creation of such a work at an advanced stage of this writer's illustrious career. (Wallace Stegner—to whom, as with Doig, landscape was character and event in any story, and particularly Western landscapes—comes to mind with his classic Crossing to Safety.)Like many of Doig's earlier novels, The Whistling Season is set in the past in rural eastern Montana—and addresses that time and place in distinct, uncluttered prose that carries the full enthusiasm of affection and even love—for the landscape, the characters, and the events of the story—without being sentimental or elegiac. The novel is narrated by an aging Montana state superintendent of schools, Paul Milliron, who is charged with deciding the fate of the state's last scattered rural schools, and who, in the hours preceding his meeting to determine those schools' fate, recalls the autumn of 1909, when he was 13 and attending his own one-room school in Marias Coulee.Recently widowed, Paul's father, overwhelmed by the child-rearing duties presented by his three sons, in addition to his challenging farming duties, hires a housekeeper, sight unseen, from a newspaper ad. The housekeeper, Rose, proclaims that she "can't cook but doesn't bite." She turns out to be a beguiling character, and she brings with her a surprise guest—her brother, the scholarly Morris, who, though one of the most bookish characters in recent times, also carries brass knuckles and—not to give away too much plot—somehow knows how to use them. The schoolteacher in Marias Coulee runs away to get married, leaving Morris to step up and take over her job. The verve and inspiration that he, an utter novice to the West, to children and to teaching children, brings to the task is told brilliantly and passionately, and is the core of the book's narrative, with its themes of all the different ways of knowing and learning, at any age.Doig's strengths in this novel are character and language—the latter manifesting itself at a level of old-fashioned high-octane grandeur not seen previously in Doig's novels, and few others': the sheer joy of word choices, phrases, sentences, situations, and character bubbling up and out, as fecund and nurturing as the dryland farmscape the story inhabits is sere and arid. The Whistling Season is a book to pass on to your favorite readers: a story of lives of active choice, lived actively. (June)Rick Bass is the Pushcart and O. Henry award-winning author of more than 20 fiction and nonfiction books. His second novel, The Diezmo, will be published in June.

From Bookmarks Magazine
Ivan Doig, along with Wallace Stegner and A. B. Guthrie, may be the quintessential Western writer. In 10 books of fiction and nonfiction, he has masterfully explored human communities set against a beautiful, if harsh, Montana landscape. The Whistling Season, a coming-of-age story told in flashbacks, thoughtfully evokes a lost time and place. Almost all aspects of this novel impressed the critics—the colorful characters, the emotional resonance, the rich period details, the eloquent prose, and even Morris's lessons on astronomy and ancient history. Only the Oregonian felt this was good, not great, Doig—which still says a lot.

From Booklist
*Starred Review* Doig's latest foray through Montana history begins in the late 1950s, with Superintendent of Public Instruction Paul Milliron on the verge of announcing the closure of the state's one-room schools, seen as hopelessly out of date in the age of Sputnik. But quickly the narrative takes us back to Paul's pivotal seventh-grade year, 1910, when he was a student in one of those one-room schools, and two landmark events took place: the Milliron family acquired a housekeeper, and Halley's comet came to Montana. Throughout his long career, Doig has been at his best when chronicling the passing of a season in the lives of a Montana family, usually farmers at around the turn of the century. It's no surprise, then, that this is his best novel since the marvelous English Creek (1985). As in all of his books, he digs the details of his historical moments from the dirt in which they thrived. We see Paul, his father, and his two younger brothers struggling to make a life on their dryland farm in the wake of their mother's death, and we feel their shock when they lay eyes on their new housekeeper, a recent widow who looks nothing like the "great-bosomed creature shrouded in gray" they had come to expect. The saga of how this stranger from Minneapolis and her brother (soon to become the new teacher) change lives in unexpected ways has all the charm of old-school storytelling, from Dickens to Laura Ingalls Wilder. Doig's antique narrative voice, which sometimes jars, feels right at home here, coming from the mouth of the young Paul, who is eagerly learning Latin as he tries to make sense of his ever-enlarging world. An entrancing new chapter in the literature of the West. Bill Ott

Evocative, poignant and beautifully written!
By Snowbrocade
The Whistling Season is an homage to a lost way of life, the homesteading prairie farmers and their children who attended a one-room schoolhouse. This story is told from the perspective of Paul, the eldest and most intellectually gifted son of a recently widowed dry-farmer in Montana. Paul is fortunate to have a father who is well-read and supports the life of the mind. Unfortunately Paul is haunted by dreams and nightmares that leave him perpetually exhausted.

Paul's father, Oliver, and his two brothers are devasted by the death of Paul's mother and struggle to keep the household together with the loss of the essential skills of the homemaker. Hiring a housekeeper, Rose, brings not only cleanliness and harmony to the home, but a new schoolteacher to the community. The school teacher is Rose's brother, Morris. Morris' love of learning and theatrical style inspire the children in the tiny schoolhouse. Ultimately the story turns on how these newcomers fit into and transform this little community.

The strengths of this novel are in its vivid portrayal of prairie life, elegant language and poignant plot. Definitely a novel that leaves me wanting to read more of this author!

Warmth in Montana
By Rick Mitchell
This novel is about a motherless family of three boys and a widower in a very small Montana town in 1910. A housekeeper is hired and her brother tags along from Minneapolis to the frontier. There the story begins.

The best way to describe the book may be to tell what it is not. It is not hokey or a father falling-in-love chic romance. Although the narrator is a teenage boy, it is not a coming of age novel. Although there is shadowing of mystery from the beginning, it is not mystery.

So what is it? It is an ode to the single room school house and education. It is a frank telling of a family's year on the Montana frontier. There are relationships explored between the boy and his family, the teacher, the housekeeper and his school mates - friend and foe.

Paul, the narrator, has to face adversity (beyond the death of his mother) in several different ways while maintaining his place in his small and insular world. His most difficult task, however, is to decide what to do with a secret he learns.

The writing is terrific, although the book got off to a slow start. After the first 70 pages, which seemed choppy, I was worried I had picked a dud. From there on the book was captivating. Paul, and almost all of the characters, were extremely likeable with all their foibles and weaknesses exposed. The one pure "bad" guy was tangential and truly wicked.

This is a great read once it started to get going. Both the story(ies) and the characters (especially Morrie, the reluctant teacher) will stay with the reader. It is entertaining and thought-provoking. Highly recommended.

A loving lament for a lost era--rough, wild, gentle, wise
By B. Case
"Whistling Season" by Ivan Doig is a deeply affecting coming-of-age novel set in the dry Montana prairie of 1910. The story is told through the memories of Paul Milliron looking back to one important year in his childhood, when he was 13. The book begins in 1950 when Paul, now Montana State Superintendent of Public Instruction, travels to his hometown of Marias Coulee with the unpleasant task of closing its one and only one-room schoolhouse. He gazes up at the night sky watching Sputnik blink across the stars and knows that a new era has arrived. He is heartbroken because this new era will wipe out all that has come before. There will be no going back.

Doig knows this territory well--it is his own ancestral roots. He has researched it thoroughly and published other successful fiction and nonfiction books set in this period and place. While reading this book, I felt transported back in time--the landscape, the people, the very dust that covered everything--came alive on the page. So do the characters--the singular, bizarre, and clarion-clear characters of the Old West--Doig is, indeed, a master at creating wonderfully authentic people that you really care about.

The story is poignant. Young Paul and his two younger brothers are experiencing the first year of grief following the death of their mother. Oliver Milliron, their father, is understandably overwhelmed with the task of being father, mother, and homesteader. Through the distant Minneapolis newspaper, he sees an ad by a housekeeper. In this manner, the ever-whistling, beautiful Rose Llewellyn comes into their life. She arrives unexpectedly with her brother, Morris Morgan, an eccentric, walking encyclopedia. Events unfold that push Morris toward becoming the town's schoolmaster. Although he has never done anything like that before, teaching seems a task that he was born to. His students flourish under his idiosyncratic and outrageous style. But Rose and Morris hold a secret that Paul eventually uncovers. How he handles that situation delineates young Paul's crossover from child to adult.

The novel is in every way, a loving lament about the passing of uniquely American way of life--the rough, yet magical and free life of Western Montana dry-land farming homesteaders.

A really first-rate novel by a first-rate writer
By A Customer
Mary McCarthy has never gotten her due as a prose writer and this -- her best novel -- seems to have been overlooked. This is the story of a young man 's emancipation from his very much loved mother (with whom he has an almost romantic relationship based on her attractiveness and their shared sensibility). They construct an ideal life together in which they eschew all "modern" conveniences for the niceties of the past. She remarries and he is launched as an adult, going to Paris to school, where he attempts to apply his interpretation of Kant's moral imperative to the various experiences he has (including one very funny-painful episode in which he invites a urine-soaked clochard to share his quarters). It is a completely delightful book and can be reread with pleasure. She is a master story teller.

Fiction and Philosophy together is priceless.
By A Customer
I was so incredibly inspired by someone that truly understands Kantian ethics, and how to apply them. Mary McCarthy was obviously very well educated and intelligent, this book was so good that I was wondering why she was not a part of the literature classes that I took in college. Her very endearing and intimate writing style has me in awe. I really want to send this book to my former philosophy professor and see what he thinks. If you like a good novel and philosophy both, read this book.

From Publishers Weekly
Never before collected in a single volume, Woolf's 46 short stories demonstrate her fondness for experimenting with narrative forms and voices. Arranged chronologically, the pieces range from tales with traditional plot lines to denser interior monologues, and enable the reader to appreciate Woolf's development as a writer of fiction. In her fine introduction, Dick, a professor at Canada's Queen's University, notes that Woolf used her short fiction as a "testing ground" for her novels, and this becomes evident. (Clarissa Dalloway appears in a number of the stories, either running errands or entertaining at home.) Woolf's many guisesincluding the feminist, the social commentator, the biting witsurface in turn here, and the composite portrait that emerges is extremely satisfying. Woolf scholars and collectors of her work will welcome the inclusion of a number of previously unpublished stories. First serial to Harper's and The American Poetry Review. Foreign rights: Hogarth Press. January 10

From Library Journal
Woolf's short stories originally appeared in various magazines and anthologies, often sloppily or intrusively edited. The 45 texts collected here were carefully prepared by Susan Dick after comparison of all surviving manuscript and printed versions; 17 have never before been published, assuring this volume an important place in the Woolf canon. The earliest pieces date from 1906 and the last were in progress when Woolf drowned herself in 1941. Taken together, they show the evolution of Woolf's experimental methods and the origin of some of the major themes in her novels. Dick's meticulous but unobtrusive editing gives us for the first time a reliable text for some of Woolf's best writing. Michael Edmonds, State Historical Soc. of Wisconsin, Madison

Review
January 10
(Publishers Weekly)

Woolf's short stories originally appeared in various magazines and anthologies, often sloppily or intrusively edited. Wonderful first steps to understanding Woolf
By A Customer
Woolf is not typically known as a writer of short stories -- "sketches" as she called them. However, the short fiction that she wrote provides a wonderful introduction to her narrative style. The early "Mark on the Wall," "Kew Gardens," and "An Unwritten Novel" give to the reader a sense of how Woolf's technique works within a smaller package than the usual assigned Woolf reading. Her feminist (apologies to VW since she considered the word dead once women were able to earn a living) leanings come through in "A Society" and "Moments of Being: 'Slater's Pins have no Points'." Woolf's early sketches are where she formed her interior monologue style, within which one thing leads to another as the work progresses. These short fiction works should be required reading for anyone delving into Woolf. Possibly those who read these sketches before they dive into the novels would understand a bit better of what Woolf's fiction is made. Excellent.

Lady in the Looking Glass
By A Customer
My favorite story in this collection is "The Lady in the Lookinglass." This story contains a powerful image: the yearning to completely comprehend another person. Such longing, as the narrator distinguishes, is not desire for "dinners and visits and polite conversations," nor "things she talked about at dinner," but something deeper, "her profounder state of being that one wanted to catch and turn to words."
On one hand, Isabella represents a synecdoche. If the narrator understands her deeply enough, he could "know everything there was to be known about Isabella," but also life, and perhaps all persons as well.
On the other hand, perhaps Isabella objectifies the inability of one person to scale walls of privacy and anonymity another erects to protect herself from intimacy.
Our sympathy straddles that wall, perhaps lying first with Isabella who veils herself, then with the narrator who longs to know her. We aren't shown why Isabella has become the trembling convolvulus. But no one's face should reflect "masklike indifference." The phrase is not congruous -- the need to mask is anything but indifferent. And can't we concede tragedy to anyone who, after 50-60 years, remains a person for whom another can claim, "The comparison showed how very little, after all these years, one knew about her; for it is impossible that any woman of flesh and blood of fifty-five or sixty should be really a wreath or a tendril"? This is a heartbreaking image.

Just as Enjoyable as her Novels
By Megan A. Burns
This book is great if you have read all of her novels or have yet to pick up one. It can introduce you to Woolf's style or if you already know what a wonderful writer she is, it will continue to entertain you. These short stories also let you see how she developed some of her novels as well as her style throughout her life. She was unbelievably dedicated to her writing, and this book makes her efforts clear.

November 1944: Their B-24 bomber shot down on what should have been an easy mission off the Borneo coast, a scattered crew of Army airmen cut themselves loose from their parachutes—only to be met by loincloth-wearing natives silently materializing out of the mountainous jungle. Would these Dayak tribesmen turn the starving airmen over to the hostile Japanese occupiers? Or would the Dayaks risk vicious reprisals to get the airmen safely home in a desperate game of hide-and-seek?

A cinematic survival story featuring a bamboo airstrip built on a rice paddy, a mad British major, and a blowpipe-wielding army that helped destroy one of the last Japanese strongholds, The Airmen and the Headhunters is also a gripping tale of wartime heroism unlike any other you have read.

From Publishers Weekly
Using detailed research and new interviews with all the surviving players, including the tribal Dayaks of Southeast Asia, diplomat and author Heimann (The Most Offending Soul Alive) presents the story of two B-24 crews, one U.S. Army Air Corps and one U.S. Navy, shot down over Borneo in November 1944 and January 1945, respectively. With the help of a local District Official and Lun Dayeh tribesmen, the airmen survived several months in uncharted interior jungles, avoiding capture by occupying Japanese forces. The book gives great insight into the Lun Dayeh, a thriving culture that uses few tools and almost no knowledge of modern machinery, best known for their practice of headhunting. Surprisingly enough, they prove kind, welcoming and very generous with what provisions they have; meanwhile, the Japanese plunder native resources and subject opposition to torture and worse, proving the terms "savage" and "civilized" to be quite subjective. A good read for WWII history buffs, Heimann's volume also contains enough material on the culture of Southeast Asian tribes to please any armchair anthropologist.

PRAISE FOR THE AIRMEN AND THE HEADHUNTERS
"With her title alone . . . Heimann rivets one’s attention."—The Washington Post Book World "Heimann brings a visceral urgency to one of WWII's most unlikely tales . . . Along the way, she makes us—like the airmen—rethink our definitions of civilized and savage."—Entertainment Weekly

From the Inside Flap
November 1944: Army airmen set out in a B-24 bomber on what should have been an easy mission off the Borneo coast. Instead they found themselves unexpectedly facing a Japanese fleet―and were shot down. When they cut themselves loose from their parachutes, they were scattered across the island’s mountainous interior. Then a group of loincloth-wearing natives silently materialized out of the jungle.

Would the tribesmen turn the starving airmen over to the hostile Japanese occupiers? Or would the Dayaks risk vicious reprisals to get the airmen safely home? The tribal leaders’ unprecedented decision led to a desperate game of hide-and-seek, and, ultimately, the return of a long-renounced ritual: the triumphant and bloody taking of heads.

A cinematic survival story that features a bamboo airstrip built on a rice paddy, a mad British major, and a blowpipe-wielding army that helped destroy one of the last Japanese strongholds, THE AIRMEN AND THE HEADHUNTERS is a gripping, you-are-there journey into the remote world and forgotten heroism of the Dayaks.

It had to be told!
By Cornelia Montgomery
This is a truly gripping tale (Hollywood should snap it up!) and only a writer with Judith Heimann's unique mix of experience and determination could have uncovered it. The native eyewitnesses were fast disappearing when Heimann travelled (twice) to Borneo where, reviving her knowledge of Malay/Indonesian from seven years living in the area, she tracked down and interviewed in their homes more than a dozen Dayak tribespeople directly involved. She also found and interviewed five of the eleven American airmen involved (of whom only one is still alive today) and collected papers, photos and diaries from the widows of still others.

The book tells the story of American airmen whose two Liberator bomber planes -- one Army, one Navy -- were shot up in the last year of WW II over the jungles of Borneo, which was totally uncharted territory about which the airmen knew nothing except that the natives had been famous as headhunters. Although the airmen could not have expected it, the local Dayak tribespeople were willing to befriend them. The Yanks would surely have starved without the Dayaks' food and shelter, humble and unfamiliar though it was. Even so, the Yanks' survival borders on the miraculous. They suffered from numerous tropical ailments for which their "survival kit" proved woefully inadequate. Their clothes and boots rotted away and they walked barefoot many miles up and down steep, wet, leech-filled mountainsides during their seven-month stay in this strange world. Heimann fleshes out the details she recovered into a narrative with descriptive passages that let you share in the experience.

Why did the Dayaks risk the wrath of their pitiless Japanese occupiers to protect these American strangers? It seems that this was at least in part thanks to the good will earned by North American Christian missionaries who had behaved with tact and courtesy towards the Dayaks from the 1930s up till 1942 when the Japanese took them away and murdered them, their wives and their children. In addition, for those Dayaks who had not converted to the new faith or who longed for the thrill of the headhunting raids that had been central to the old faith, the opportunity to take heads again -- even though only Japanese ones -- had strong appeal.

Heimann relates her many-sided tale with great clarity, in spite of a dauntingly vast and various cast of characters that includes not only the airmen and the westernized Indonesians from other islands who were serving in Borneo as district officers and acting pastors, but also brave Dayak men and women, both Christianized and pagan (whose way of life was entirely unknown to this reader), as well as a handful of Chinese shopkeepers, daring Aussie special operations paratroops and pilots and a mad British Major!

Furthermore, for once, there are decent maps that help you follow the plot, thanks to months Heimann spent with a mapmaker entering the names and river courses of this poorly charted region,

Altogether an exciting and surprisingly upbeat story from a world few of us know anything about!

What a story of courage and survival
By Armchair Interviews
Reviewed by Jan Warren

The Airmen and the Headhunters is a true account of eleven young American crewmembers of a B-24 bomber, Lucky Strike, shot down over an unexplored mountainous region in Northern Borneo during WWII. It is also a touching story of heroism by not only the airmen, but of those who risked everything to protect and care for them during the six harrowing months before the survivor's liberation by Australian special forces.

Because of the torturous cruelty of Borneo's Japanese invaders and their determination to find and kill the airmen and any who aided them, the Lun Dayeh tribe was forced to return to the gruesome ritual of headhunting against their Japanese enemies.

As I read the airmen's vivid accounts of trudging exhausted, starving and sick through the dense Borneo jungle with their feet and legs covered in leeches and bug bites, I felt their hopelessness and pain.

The deeper I delved into the story of the unimaginable hardships of these brave men and those of Borneo's jungle inhabitants, I found myself giving thanks for even the simple comforts I usually take for granted, like clean running water and a comfortable bed.

If you are looking for a true story that will stir your emotions, then I can recommend The Airmen and the Headhunters. Heartfelt gratefulness may rise within you, as it did me in honor of all of the heroes who suffer for the cause of freedom past and present.

The author, Judith M. Heimann spent ten years compiling the detailed information before writing this book. Included are maps of the places in Borneo mentioned within the story, photos, acknowledgements, a detailed glossary and index, all of which are impressive.

I would rate this non-fiction book PG-13 not only because of the intense subject matter but for the occasional "colorful" vocabulary used by those who lived through it.

Armchair Interviews says: Yet another stirring story of WWII events and the people who survive them.

An Enthralling Gem of a Story of WWII Culture Clash in Borneo
By Mr. Truthteller
Author Judith Heimann provided intriguing glimpses of this unusual story in her previous work on Tom Harrisson, a Britisher living in Borneo in World War II who, despite being "The Most Offending Soul Alive", managed to organize Dayak tribesmen (an indigenous, loosely affiliated group of tribal groups) in Borneo armed with deadly blow-pipes into a small but effective army against the Japanese, eventually being credited with killing over 1,500 of the enemy.

Her new book, "The Airmen and the Headhunters", is an outgrowth of her book on Tom Harrison (who coincidentally was a neighbor of hers many years ago in Borneo - he died in 1976). It is a well-written and engaging account of 11 Yankee airman who survive a crash-landing of their B-24 "Liberator" bomber in November 1944 only to find themselves surrounded by Dayak tribesmen who agree to help them escape from and evade capture by the Japanese, an adventure which takes a harrowing six months. The result is an unexpected gem of a story of survival in which the airmen (untrained and unable to survive in the wilds of Borneo) are saved by a peoples who had nothing to gain and everything to lose (through the vengeance and retribution of the Japanese) by helping them out.

Amazon.com Review
Daniel Keyes wrote little SF but is highly regarded for one classic, Flowers for Algernon. As a 1959 novella it won a Hugo Award; the 1966 novel-length expansion won a Nebula. The Oscar-winning movie adaptation Charly (1968) also spawned a 1980 Broadway musical.

Following his doctor's instructions, engaging simpleton Charlie Gordon tells his own story in semi-literate "progris riports." He dimly wants to better himself, but with an IQ of 68 can't even beat the laboratory mouse Algernon at maze-solving:

I dint feel bad because I watched Algernon and I lernd how to finish the amaze even if it takes me along time.

I dint know mice were so smart.

Algernon is extra-clever thanks to an experimental brain operation so far tried only on animals. Charlie eagerly volunteers as the first human subject. After frustrating delays and agonies of concentration, the effects begin to show and the reports steadily improve: "Punctuation, is? fun!" But getting smarter brings cruel shocks, as Charlie realizes that his merry "friends" at the bakery where he sweeps the floor have all along been laughing at him, never with him. The IQ rise continues, taking him steadily past the human average to genius level and beyond, until he's as intellectually alone as the old, foolish Charlie ever was--and now painfully aware of it. Then, ominously, the smart mouse Algernon begins to deteriorate...

Flowers for Algernon is a timeless tear-jerker with a terrific emotional impact. --David Langford

Truly touching
By shel99
I read this book for school when I was in 7th grade, and just finished re-reading it ten years and a degree in biology later. I loved it when I was a teen, and (after forcing myself to ignore my instinctive scientific skepticism) still love it today.
It's a very thought-provoking story, all the more so when you consider that it was written about 40 years ago when society was a bit less tolerant of the mentally retarded than it is now. Charlie is a man in his 30s with an IQ of 68 when the book starts; through a controversial experimental operation, his IQ gets higher and higher until it soars at one point to 185. The story is told through the journal entries that he is told to keep for the researchers in charge of the study. Through Charlie's words, you can see how sharply his intellect grows and how difficult it is for him because as smart as he becomes, his *emotional* intelligence is still that of a child.
Charlie's emergence from ignorance is painful for him; imagine learning all of life's hard truth's in a matter of weeks rather than the normal development from innocent child to worldly adult. And the ending of the book is heartwrenching. Everyone should read "Flowers for Algernon" at some point in their life. It's a classic.

Very Touching Book...A Must Read
By Chris Howard
I was so surprised by this book. Flowers For Algernon was one of the best books I've read this year and I really wasn't expecting it.

It is the story of Charlie Gordon, a man in his thirties with mental retardation. Charlie is the subject of a psychological research project at a university that is examining the effects of a new surgical procedure on mental retardation. Charlie's estranged sister gives the university permission to perform the procedure on Charlie. The procedure proves to be at least a temporary success and Charlie goes from having mental retardation to having an IQ of 185 in a manner of weeks.

The experiment is initially tried on a white mouse named Algernon. Algernon is tested through a complex maze where he is rewarded by food after reaching the end. Charlie races Algernon with a maze of his own and receives a shock if he goes the wrong way. At the beginning of the book, Algernon beats Charlie to the finish line every time. But Charlie soon soars past Algernon and through the process grows close to the mouse.

The book is written in the form of journal entries kept by Charlie for the experiment. At the beginning of the book, words are misspelled, ideas are vague, and relationships are simple. As the book progresses, so does Charlie's thought process and so do his relationships. Charlie learns what true love is as he falls in love with his teacher, Alice. He learns what physical love is as he comes into contact with his artistic and eccentric neighbor, Fay. And he learns the pains of relational love as he relives memories of his family and friends.

What was most touching to me about this book were these flashbacks and moments of recognition. When Charlie was still mentally retarded, he didn't realize when people were laughing at him or making fun of him. He didn't realize that when his mother was crying it was because she was ashamed to have him as a son. But now that he has had this operation he is able to look back on these situations and realize what was going on. You can imagine the pain of this.

Charlie is initially excited about "becoming smart". He's been teased throughout his life for "being a moron" and has been the subject of people's amusement. What Charlie soon finds is that acceptance is a hard thing to come by. Charlie goes straight from mentally retarded to genius. As a genius, he is seen as arrogant and absurd and is once again estranged by his peers.

PROFOUNDLY MOVING...THOUGHT PROVOKING...
By lawyeraau
This is a wonderful and highly original novel about a mentally challenged man named Charlie who wanted to be smart. One day, his wish was granted. A group of scientists selected him for an experimental operation which would to raise his intelligence to genius level. Suddenly, Charlie found himself transformed, and life, as he knew it, changed.

His story is told entirely through Charlie's eyes and perceptions in the form of progress reports. The reader actually sees the change in Charlie take place, as his progress reports become more complex, well written, and filled with the angst of personal discovery and growth, as well as with his gradual awareness of his amazing and accelerated intellectual development.

The progress reports are a wonderful contrivance for facilitating the story, and the reader is one with Charlie on his voyage of self-discovery. What happens to Charlie in the long run is profoundly moving and thought provoking. It is no wonder that this author was the recipient of the Nebula Award, which is given by the Science Fiction Writers of America for having written the Best Novel of the Year. This is definitely a book well worth reading and having in one's personal collection. Bravo!

Comic novella by Eudora Welty, published in 1954. Cast as a monologue, it is rich with colloquial speech and descriptive imagery. The narrator of the story is Miss Edna Earle Ponder, one of the last living members of a once-prominent family, who manages the Beulah Hotel in Clay, Miss. She tells a traveling salesman the history of her family and fellow townsfolk. -- The Merriam-Webster Encyclopedia of Literature

Easily My Favorite Eudora Welty Work Thus Far!
By FCD117
The Ponder Heart is a thoroughly enjoyable work of American Southern writing. I have been reading Eudora Welty's fiction writing in chronological order. I very much enjoyed her earlier short stories. As her short story writing progresses she becomes a more complex writer. As a person of relatively simple taste, typically, I struggle with more complicated writing and enjoy it less.

This story is not lengthy. It is vintage American Southern writing. It is very humorous. Miss Welty certainly has a keen wit. I do not wish to risk being a "spoiler". I read this book on Kindle and listened to a well narrated audiobook at the same time. I enjoyed it greatly.

Therefore, in regard to short stories, "A Curtain of Green and other Stories", is my favorite collection. There are other later stories that I do like, I did not really care for "The Robber Bridgegroom". It was well written and, at times, very humorous, just not my cup of tea; too allegorical I think. I enjoyed "Delta Wedding" but was not enthralled with it. I have not as of yet read "The Optomist's Daughter".

I am also reading a very good biography of Eudora Welty by Suzanne Marrs which I have found very enlightening. A lot of Miss Welty's writing is connected to various stages in her life. This adds a great deal of meaning to some of her later stories. Thank You...

The Ponder Heart
By Edward D Kennedy
This book is surely one of Eudora Welty's finest and funniest works, narrated in the first person by Edna Earl, who tells of the trumped up charges against her eccentric uncle for murdering his young wife. I doubt that any other writer could so effectively present the nuances and rhythms of southern speech and the characteristics of a small southern town. Published in the early 50s, its presentation of the Mississippi Negroes as servants might be offensive to some, but it avoids the harsh language of some other southern works of the first half of the twentieth century.
