Friend of the Bushmen

Laurens van der Post (1906-1996) was born in South Africa and grew up to be a reporter, dairy farmer, soldier, writer, and television personality. He was the godfather of Prince William, and was sometimes referred to as "Prince Charles' guru," because he was a mystical visionary with a wise old soul, quite skilled at thinking outside the box.

He took great pleasure in creating fascinating stories intended to wake up people whose thinkers had fallen asleep. The transformative power of his stories was far more important to him than 100% factual accuracy, and he sometimes "embellished" them to make them more forceful. This was the storyteller's job: creating amazing stories -- not rigidly accurate scientific discourses.

Laurens was not universally loved by white South Africans, because he had an annoying habit of criticizing segregation, racism, and oppression. He had special fondness for the Bushmen, who were sharply mistreated by everyone, both black and white. Bushmen once inhabited all of southern Africa, but black and white newcomers drove them off their best lands, forcing them into the Kalahari Desert, an extremely harsh place.

In 1955, Laurens did a documentary on the Bushmen for the BBC, and it was the second most popular program ever, only the queen's coronation had a bigger audience. He went on to write several books on Bushmen themes, including The Heart of the Hunter. Passages from this book are often quoted by writers of the counterculture, because Laurens had profound respect for the ability of simpler societies to live lightly on the Earth, with great reverence. He also had a robust contempt for modern industrial society, and he did not hesitate to express this. He had a front row seat for World War II, and this adventure in industrial warfare took much of the shine off of civilization's reputation.

Laurens introduced us to his beloved wild Bushmen, people of "irrepressible gaiety." One elder was "utterly at one with all the life that was and could ever be." Bushmen were incredibly in tune with nature, and could feel the presence of unseen animals. They could sense danger from far away. They could communicate telepathically. They didn't work hard, they didn't have jobs, they didn't have leaders, and they were free. Free! They had a culture that worked. John Reader once wrote that the Bushmen were able to live in their ordinary manner during the third year of extreme drought that killed 180,000 people and 250,000 cattle.

Unfortunately, the Bantu and European newcomers were farmers, herders, and assorted moneymakers -- property freaks -- and the way they treated Bushmen was similar to the relationship between Montana ranchers and prairie dogs. Consequently, the Bushmen avoided all contact with the outside world, because the dominant culture treated them like sub-human vermin, or no-cost slaves, or future tax-paying peasants or diamond miners.

Laurens lamented modern society, with its vast hordes of property freaks, the tragic innocent victims of arrested development. Because of our estrangement from nature, our minds had lost contact with core human instincts, we had lost our souls, we were starved for meaning, and we were mindlessly destroying system after system. He decreed: "One look at the identical towns we are building all over the world ought to be enough to show us that this kind of progress is like the proliferation of a single cell at the expense of the rest, which produces the cancer that kills the whole body."

In 1961, Laurens did not think like the herd. He celebrated wild freedom, and denounced the destructive insanity of industrial civilization. Yet he was a popular and respected celebrity in Britain, and he sipped champagne with the richest and most powerful. He was knighted in 1981, becoming Sir Laurens van der Post, an extraordinary achievement for someone who was so at odds with mainstream thinking.

The power of this book lies in its rebellious and unconventional attitude. It's OK to think. It's OK to question. It's OK to shout "Wolf!" when there are wolves as far as the eye can see. It's OK to be different, to prefer integrity over trendiness, to seek truth instead of mindless conformity. If your heart is screaming about the senseless destruction of life on Earth, you aren't crazy, you're awake. What's crazy is our way of life, our culture. This is an important concept to understand.

Creative people have a primary role to play in influencing the path of our society, because society permits them to think outside the box. Popes, politicians, tycoons, and educators aren't allowed to do this, because they have an obligation to protect and preserve the pathological belief system that is laying waste to the world. Everything we need for healing can only be found outside the box, and creative people can help us find them, with luck.

The weakness of the book is that it doesn't teach us a great deal about the Bushmen way of life. Laurens knew few Bushmen, spent little time with them, and didn't know their language. The BBC documentary was almost aborted because Laurens and his team had a very hard time finding any Bushmen to film. Finally they found one band, who allowed themselves to be seen, because they were close to dying from dehydration. You could learn much more about the Bushmen by reading Elizabeth Marshall Thomas.

The Bushmen finally got their own official home when the Central Kalahari Game Reserve was created in 1961. This Denmark-sized park was located in the middle of what is now Botswana. But diamonds were discovered on the reserve in the early `80s, and this inspired the government to remove the Bushmen from their land. In 2006, they won the right to return, but were forbidden to hunt or drink water. In 2011, they won the right to drink water.

Botswana promotes safari tours at the reserve, and this generates a lot of income for an extremely poor country. Rich tourists want to enjoy a pure wilderness experience, gazing at giraffes from their hot tubs, and wild, naked, blood-spattered savages would simply spoil this demented fantasy. Laurens would have a different opinion, of course.

The great divide

I again with the earlier reviewer who pointed out the noticeable difference between the first part of this book and the latter; when Van der Post is recounting his experiences with the Bushmen (or San, if you prefer) and with various other folk who have come to inhabit the Kalahari the book is very interesting and informative. However, in the second half he feels the need to reinterpret the Bushmen's legends or myths through a Jungian perspective, a treatment I found neither compelling nor convincing. While the fragments of the Bushmen's tales are interesting and Van der Post's ruminations are occasionally thought provoking, I didn't particularly enjoy his technique of intercutting between a few sentences of the one and heavy doses of the other. I suppose that for the reader who cares to interpret everything by archetypes and quests it might prove intriguing, but I soon came to find it rather annoying and distracting.

Ten essays, 1971-83: ranging from autobiography through analyses of the underpinnings of sf to examinations of specific authors and works - delivered in thunderous yet calculated tones, and a welter of academic polysyllables. The autobiographical piece is most engaging and revealing - with Lem candidly discussing his upbringing, his Jewish heritage, the German and Russian occupations of Poland, his own sf. Elsewhere, he demonstrates his formidable intellect and his self-imposed conceptual limitations: he finds fiction without intellectual challenge boring (and has no patience with the notion of fiction as entertainment); in his view, sf works in which neither the objects nor the ideas have any basis in reality are merely "empty games." Later, however, Lem cogently discusses sf's various time-travel motifs - notwithstanding his previous denunciation of "empty games" where "impossible time-travel machines are used to point out impossible time-travel paradoxes." "The primary unsolved problem" of sf, he writes, is "the lack of a theoretical typology of its paradigmatic structures" - yet he fails to demonstrate why this lack is so damaging. On the incestuous nature of Western sf, he's devastating: "critiques are not produced independently, but are written by either the authors or the editors of anthologies, who evaluate each other's works." (He also blasts publishers and editors for camouflaging advertising as criticism.) For all these reasons, sf is trashy and apt to remain so. Moving on to specifics, Lem shows himself to be a penetrating but often arbitrary and petulant critic. Just about the only Western sf author he approves of (Ballard and Bradbury rate a maybe) is Philip K. Dick - who "tries to probe the neglected, latent, untouched, as-yet-unrealized potentialities of human existence." A. E. van Vogt's work is condemned as "stupid lies" without a shred of evidence or analysis; Borges, Lem determines, "has suffered from a lack of a free and rich imagination." He criticizes Daniel Keyes' Flowers for Algernon for what Leto thinks Keyes' should have written; the Strugatsky brothers' Roadside Picnic - which Leto not only analyzes brilliantly, but finds enjoyable - comes in for similar treatment. Clearly, there's some ax-grinding going on. In sum: guaranteed to offend and provoke. (Kirkus Reviews)

For SF writers who want to be real writers

One of the essays in this book got the author's honorary membership of the American SF Association revoked. Or rather, some of it did, in a way. "Science Fiction - A Hopeless Case with Exceptions" was published in the US in a mutilated "translation" under the tactful title "A Scientist's Choice of the World's Worst Writing", and Lem was unceremoniously booted out of the organisation. The essay in question is in fact a harsh, but in its essentials accurate, dissection of the deplorable state of science fiction and science fiction criticism as compared with the rest of literature, and deserves serious attention. (The exception discussed, by the way, is the work of Philip K Dick, and a detailed review of Dick's Ubik, justifying its claim to be taken as serious fiction, also appears in Microworlds.) There is also a fine review of the Strugatsky brothers' extraordinary novella Roadside Picnic, which was the basis for Andrei Tarkovsky's equally extraordinary though somewhat different film Stalker; an interesting essay on Jorge Luis Borges, noting the unique qualities and the limitations apparent in his stories; and, perhaps most valuably, a couple of long essays on what science fiction could be if it could only kick its maleficient Star Wars-style good-guy/bad-guy simplemindedness. Lem is precise, logical, detailed, cantankerous and fascinating. The world's greatest writer of grown-up science fiction and fantasy is once again pointing the way for the rest of us.

Lem argues for intelligent sci-fi

I found this book totally by accident, while browsing the sf&f shelves of one of the big bookstores without much hope, and I'm glad I did, because Lem's essay, "Science-fiction : a hopeless case - with exceptions", really crystallised a lot of the things that concerned me about science fiction, and showed that at least one other person thought that sf should at least try to be literature. (Although written in 1970, and from the isolated position of Communist Poland, this essay is still depressingly accurate - although things have improved since his time.)
The guy is a heavy thinker, and come from a European tradition of taking science fiction seriously as a literature of ideas (Lem wrote the classic Solaris, which was made into a Russian movie). He is quite readable, however, and is obviously passionate about his subject. This book is essential for any academic study of science fiction, and for any reader who takes the genre's potential seriously.

The Unitas Oppositorum of Stanislaw Lem

Although the book in its entirety is highly recommended for fans of Lem, I would like to present some comments extracted from the essay entitled Unitas Oppositorum: The Prose of Jorge Luis Borges.

Lem states: "In each story we can find the same kind of method: Borges transforms a firmly established part of some cultural system by means of the terms of the system itself. In the fields of religious belief, in ontology, in literary theory, the author "continues" what mankind has "only begun to make." Using this tour d'adresse Borges makes comical and absurd those things which we revere because of their current cultural value."

"However, each of these tales has in addition another - wholly serious - hidden meaning. At base, his curious fantasy is, I claim, quite realistic. The author therefore has the courage to deal with the most valuable goals of mankind just as mankind himself does. The only difference is that Borges continues these combinatory operations to their utmost logical conclusions."

"Considered from a formal point of view, the creative method of Borges is very simple. It might be called unitas oppositorum, the unity of mutually exclusive opposites. What allegedly must be kept separate for all time (that which is considered irreconcilable) is joined before our very eyes, and without distorting logic. The structural content of nearly all of Borges's stories is built up by this elegant and precise unity."

"In the beginning he was a librarian, and he has remained one, although the most brilliant manifestation of one. He had to search in libraries for sources of inspiration, and he restricted himself wholly to cultural-mythical sources. They were deep, multifarious, rich sources - for they contain the total reservoir of the mythical thought of mankind.

But in our age they are on the decline, dying off as far as their power to interpret and explain a world undergoing further changes is concerned. In his paradigmatic structures, and even in his greatest achievements, Borges is located near the end of a descending curve which had its culmination centuries ago. Therefore he is forced to play with the sacral, the awe-inspiring, the sublime, and the mysterious from our grandfathers. Only in rare cases does he succeed in continuing this game in a serious way. Only then does he break through the paradigmatically and culturally caused incarceration which is its limitations, and which is quite contrary to the freedom of artistic creation he strives for. He is one of the great men, but at the same time he is an epigone. Perhaps for the last time. He has lit up - given a paradoxical resurrection to - the treasures transmitted to us from the past. But he will not succeed in keeping them alive for any long period of time. Not because he has a second-rate mind, but because, I believe such a resurrection of transitory things is in our time quite impossible. His work, admirable though it may be, is located in its entirety at the opposite pole from the direction of our fate. Even this great master of the logically immaculate paradox cannot "alloy" our world's fate with his own work. He has explicated to us paradises and hells; but in his books Borges knows nothing about them."

Incredible.

This book does so much in such a small space. It is at once an introduction to much of Western philosophy and an original treatise on many fundamental philosophical questions. Like her other books, Arendt focuses here more on philosophy as it applies to a person rather than more theoretical matters such as metaphysics. Everybody should read this book. I had it for a sophomore-level philosophy class, and I have found myself coming back to it time and time again for the next 8 years.

A refuge of delight for the thoughtful reader

I came to this book still quite skeptical of Arendt's writing style and intellectual caliber; several years earlier I had attempted to read her book 'The Human Condition' and it underwhelmed me with its stilted writing style. But I was pleasantly surprised and even delighted almost from the first few pages of this work. This book was a complete intellectual delight, relatively easy to digest, but extremely well written, without a trace of arrogance or stylistic awkwardness. This is no doubt due to the expert assistance given Arendt by her editor Mary McCarthy.

While Arendt had originally planned to write a three-part work, on Thinking, Willing, and Judging, she only lived to complete the first two sections. But since she associates Thinking with the past and Willing with the future, it seems fitting to limit the book to these two concepts. (There is a short appendix containing lecture notes from a series she had given on Kant's Critique of Judgment, but I don't recommend it; it's very rough and hard to read.)

A large part of the first section on Thinking is devoted to Greek philosophy. She throws around a fair amount of Greek that, for the most part, is translated or understandable from the context. The second section is heavy on medieval philosophy with healthy doses of Latin all over the place. This was the more interesting section from my point of view, for there are lengthy discussions of Augustine and Duns Scotus. Towards the end of the second section she deals with Nietzsche and Heidegger. Heidegger (as you might expect) is given a full and sympathetic treatment.

Reading this book has been an experience that I won't soon forget. In fact, I am suffering withdrawal symptoms from it as I write this review. The book was a one-of-a-kind intellectual home to me. I will also add, once you get to the end of the Willing section, you may as well stop reading. Editor Mary McCarthy's Postface is rather self-centered and repetitious, not really worth one's time. And the final unedited lectures of Arendt on Kant's Critique of Judgment are rough, sketchy, and very unlike the polished prose of the earlier part of this great book.

If you are looking for a sophisticated work that will engage your mind but will not overwhelm your intellect, then this is the book. It will easily become a refuge of delight for any thoughtful reader.

Philosophically speaking, this is Arendt at her best.

In her typical straight-to-the-point style of writing, Arendt explores some of the most philosophically important questions asked since antiquity. She guides us through the ages of development on topics such as freewill, time, and Being. She is one of the most important thinkers, not of the 20th century, but of all "time". This is Arendt for the philosopher/thinker, not the political scientist. From Heraclitus to Maurice Merleau-Ponty, Arendt leaves no great thinker's stone unturned. I've read a lot of books, and this is probably one of the most important. Does she give us any answers to these important questions? NO. However, she shows that there are no answers to these questions, only better questions to be asked.

Why does the index have to be so lousy for law books?

First off, I have found the Gilbert commercial law school outlines to be the best. They also put out the best lectures on tape/CD.

However, the index is nearly as bad as Emanuel's. You can't just look up a subject by a word, such as "minors." For instance, if I can't remember whether or not a minor can be an agent, I can't just go to "M" in the index for "minor." I have to try and figure out which category or chapter the authors would have included that information in, and then hope they actually at least put "minor" in the index under the mystery section.

These guys expect us to remember that the issue regarding a minor is "capacity," then figure out that "capacity" would be under "creating agencies," for example--which of course is a huge pain when you're exhausted with studying law & your brain is too wiped out to have to go through all that just to look up whether or not a minor can become an agent...

That said, when you do finally find the section you're looking for....the outline is written pretty clearly & concisely without giving you all of the previous laws that are no longer relevent, like the Emanuel outlines do, which drives me nuts, too.

Before you begin with this outline, though, I suggest you buy yourself a bunch of tab post-its so you can find info easily again, or jot your own index inside the front cover as you go along. Better yet, keep a running outline/notes document on your computer so you can just do a search of your document to quickly find topics/rules without having to spend 1/2 hour trying to figure out where it was in the Gilbert outline again.

Best Gilberts I Own

The is the standard Gilberts outline book. A little thinner than most, but the content is good. If your professor is extremely socratic like mine was, this is the book for you. Even if the cases don't all match, the ideas are framed in easy to understand outline format. I know people who have kept this book and used it for bar review after graduation from law school!

Great for last minute review

I am not normally a fan of strict outline style review for going over subjects for finals. However, Agency/Partnership/LLC is one of those areas that are very rule based.

I purchased a competitors explanation book, and found myself relying solely on the Gilbert's outline. There are hardly as many cases to cite or case examples to know in Agency as there are in other areas of law. Knowing just the rules as laid out in this book helped me to know more than enough to do well on my exam.

As evidenced in this collection of nine stories, Oates's imagination is still fertile, feverish and macabre. These females are killers, either by their own hands or through manipulation. To be sure, they have provocation: abandonment, betrayal, abuse, the loss of reason to passion or obsession. In "Hunger," the longest and best of the stories, a rich but neglected corporate wife succumbs to a sexual obsession that ends in murder. Suspenseful and Lolita-like, "Doll: A Romance of the Mississippi," seduces with its lurid concept of a young prostitute who is pimped by her father and degenerates into a homicidal psychopath. Another father tries futilely to protect his frantic daughter from her cruel husband in the haunting "So Help Me God." It seems unlikely, however, that the six-year-old girl in "The Banshee" would be able to recognize the hors d'oeuvres at her mother's party as "Russian caviar [and]... smoked salmon on Swedish crackers," and such details undermine plausibility. Set against the familiar territory of upstate New York towns, but also Manhattan's Park Avenue, rich enclaves on Cape Cod and a hospital ward, these are powerful stories, but best read in small doses. The young also succumb to sinister behaviors. In "The Banshee," a precocious six-year-old girl uses her baby brother as bait to gain the attention of a neglectful mother. One should never assume that the fairer sex is the weaker and in this collection of stories, the prodigious Oates reveals the dark side of a woman's psyche, whether inspired by childhood abandonment or a married woman's rapidly escalating sexual obsession. Flying to the very edge of reason, each of these stories plunges into the darker waters of female behavior, some macabre, some grotesque, others giving voice to the secret impulses that drive women to extremes, to the edge of reason, innocent children taxed beyond the fragile structures of their emotional boundaries.

In the first tale, "So Help Me God", a young woman falls in love with a bad boy cop, caught in a web of abuse with the husband she met at fourteen and married at eighteen. The exhilarating sexual energy of their early encounters feels far more dangerous as he toys with her dependency, obsession turning to terror. In "Doll, A Romance of the Mississippi", eerily reminiscent and a cross between "Baby Doll" and Lolita, a young girl travels the Midwest with her (step)father, preying on the sexual fantasies of vulnerable paying customers, frequently betrayed by her own twisted demons, home-schooled from the trunk of their 1953 Buick La Salle. "Madison at Guignol" speaks to a woman's quest for perfection: "But it is my soul I seek continuously, where I can and however." This fashion maven is a victim of her own pathetic hubris, caught in a horror beyond her ability to comprehend.

A personal favorite is "Hunger", one of the longer pieces in The Female of the Species. Kristine, the second wife of a wealthy man, begins a casual dalliance with an enigmatic, exotic stranger, Jean-Claude, a new arrival in the elite oceanside community where she is vacationing with her small daughter. In the accepting society of this well-heeled colony, Kristine opens a door she is unable to close, her impulsive romance imbued with the menace of incipient violence, helpless against her consuming passion for the forbidden, en route to a stunning and elaborate betrayal. There are more: "The Banshee"; "The Haunting"; "Tell Me You Forgive Me?"; "The Angel of Death" and "The Angel of Mercy", each with a uniquely bizarre perspective. This collection is fascinating and unsettling, written in the evocative prose that is natural to this author, with random images of threat and menace, birds screeching through the sky, teeming hordes of feral cats, bucolic scenes threaded with nature's unpredictability, the power of one character's preoccupation with another, stalking death, all the ingredients to send a chill up your spine in the dark of the night. One of the Best Children's Books

As a child, I was blessed that my mother sang me her West Virginia version of this song/story/poem, and my children well remember and love the version I sang to them when they were young. It is not clear how old this beautiful counting song is, but all children love the comfort of the mother/child relationship highlighted in the story. Listen to John Langstaff's recording and enjoy Feodor Rojankovsky's delightful and very endearing illustrations. This song and its companion, Frog Went A-Courtin', have been beloved by children and their families for many centuries. I give both books as gifts to young families and encourage those who read them to sing the stories. My mother's singing brought so much more to their telling.

You know how you can quote every page of "Spot's First Walk" ... three years later. This ones like that. The difference is that its such a nice book you don't start to dread bed times. I can quote this one now (I should be working, never mind) "Over in the meadow in the sand and the sun, lived an old mother turtle and her little turtle, one. Dig said the Mother, I dig said the one. So he dug all day in .." Oh all right, I'll stop. If you think you really know it, whats different about the Owl's page ? Buy it, I love it

For us who love Cats more than we should...

A nice enough book, with pictures from the (old! Probably original Cast) Broadway production. You get the pictures, all the lyrics (which you get just as well from "Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats"), and, the most interesting part of the book; essays from Lloyd-Webber, Napier, Lynne and one other on the making of the musical Cats.

Awsome, nearly all the lyrics, and pics!

This book was awsome! The only thing that remotly threw me off track was the original cast's costumes! If you were like me, and had only seen the video, take a good close look at Mongogeri and Rumpletezer, then look at them in this book, it's freaky! The book contains nearly all the songs lyrics, (Excluding a few lines of the really long songs, such as Skimbleshanks the Railway Cat) and lots of photos from the original production. It's quite a bargin at approximently $13.00, my uncle payed much more for his!

An excellent companion to the musical

Even despite the closure of the Broadway production, you can still relive the experience and memory of the show thorugh this wonderful picture book. With photographs from the Broadway premiere, and interesting commentaries by the production team, it can strongly be recomended to those who know nothing about the show. The photographs are generally well-taken, and captioned with extracts from the libretto, even despite the fact that in order to shorten the book, two long portions were taken out - one each from Gus: the Theatre Cat, and Skimbleshanks: the Railway Cat. Yet, I know that the text is near-complete and rather satisfactory, but I suggest that you buy the original Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats as well. The one advantage this book has over the out-of-print edition with photography from the actual world-premiere production, is the greater reality achieved here. The actors look more like cats in this production. Overall, I think that this is an excellent book and a great gift to give to the CATS fanatic, or any musical lover.

About the Author
JAMES WELDON JOHNSON (1871–1938) was a songwriter, poet, novelist, journalist, critic, autobiographer, lawyer, and public servant. With his brother John Rosamond, he wrote “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” which became the African American national anthem. He was United States consul to Venezuela and Nicaragua, executive director of the NAACP, and a professor of creative literature at Fisk University. His many books include The Autobiography of an Ex-Colored Man.

Glad to have found this again

I came across this book some thirty years ago while in high school. To this day, there are poems from the book I remember. They are simply beautiful and the poets who wrote them artistic beyond measure. I, sadly, understand why we were not introduced to this book when I was young...a white child in an 99.9% white school and having been chastised for reading a 'black' book...but nowadays, children should be shown the wonderful works by these great poets, not have to find them by accident like I did.

A Fine Anthology with a Marvelous Introduction

After reading Johnson's intro, I find myself very curious about Phyllis Wheatley.
Her name is so familiar; her poetry is not. The book contains Johnson's The Creation, one of my all time favorite poems, and several I've never read before that appeared before Langston Hughes began publishing.

I came across this book in the library way back in the early 90s and loved it so much I would read and read it over and over again through the years. I loved it so much that I started a blog A Negress Speaks... ([...]), where I would randomly select a poem and discuss it and tie it in with something going on in my world or something from my past. I have loved poetry since Ms. Foster had us to memorize and recite Robert Frost's "Stopping By The Woods on A Snowy Evening" when I was in the sixth grade.

As the novel opens, Brit Alice Butler is en route to a retreat sponsored by her employer, PopCo, a cutting-edge--and slightly creepy--toy company. (Alice takes the midnight train to avoid colleagues--and human contact in general--an early indication that she is a little off-kilter.) It's no wonder Alice considers herself an outsider; her father disappeared when she was nine, leaving her in the care of her grandparents, two quirky cryptanalysts privy to the whereabouts of a centuries-old buried treasure. Meanwhile, at the company conference, Alice and her colleagues are charged with developing the ultimate product for the teen-girl market. Alice is soon distracted from the task by mysterious encoded messages slipped under her door. Will deciphering them shape her future, or perhaps shed light on the past? clever and challenging

I'll say from the get-go that Scarlett Thomas is not a writer for everyone, but she does resonate with me. I enjoyed this book immensely. I love how she incorporates elements of science and weaves it in and out of the story. Her protagonist is unique, odd and (for me, at least), totally and completely intriguing and lovable. I can see how some people might be put off by the end, and there were a couple places where our cultural differences shone through (I'm from the US), such as the mention of genetically modified foods (which are more commonly accepted here than in Europe), however I'd say keep an open mind. It's good to challenge our thinking and our acceptance of reality, and Thomas is the master of getting you to do that.

Quirky, Smart and Funny

Fascinating and well-told story. If you like quirky/clever stories with off-beat, first-person narrators who operate outside the constraints of standard society, you'll dig this one.

Absolutely brilliant

One of the most interesting and intelligent books I've read in a long time, PopCo ties together its spiky protagonist Alice Butler's childhood as a junior cryptanalyst with her current job developing products for a massive toy conglomerate. As she wrestles with her latest corporate challenge--how to market toys to teenage girls--she reflects on the nature of codes, cryptanalysis, cryptography, buried treasure, the ethics of marketing, and veganism.

This is definitely one of those books where you either read it and think it's an utter waste of time and mildly seditious, or you really wish the author was a friend of yours and you could call her up just to chat (to paraphrase Salinger).
