About the Author
Karl Jaspers (1883-1969), a founder of existentialism, studied law and medicine at the University of Heidelberg in Germany, and received his M.D. in 1909. He taught psychiatry and philosophy at the University of Heidelberg, and philosophy at the University of Basel in Switzerland. His books include Psychology of World Views, and Philosophy.

Great Contribution to the History of Ideas

Jaspers, the theologically oriented existentialist (I would say that Heidegger was theologically born and bourne/thrown, but not oriented "language is the home of Being"), was perhaps at his best as a teacher of philosophy. This volume, the first of his magnificent series on "The Great Philosophers" is loaded with really good stuff. What I like about these books is: 1) Jaspers writes about the philosophers he esteems, rather than attempting to write a comprehensive history which creates a ambience which is fun to research because he's having fun; 2) he compacts the essential utterances into a svelte, summary style with directive commentary - esp. useful for the student who is in hurry - for undergrads thru prelims.
Proof of his effectiveness as a teacher: Hannah Arendt, among the elite philosophic minds of the 20th century - his ever-grateful star student. Also good - is the volume with Kant in it - classic modernity.

About Greeks

We need, in the middle of Greek's "economic" crisis to remember that all the Western World, from its roots, is deeply indebted to (ancient) Greek thought. Many of our values and of our words of central importance are greek. There is an endless list which will always show that Democracy, Pholosophy, Economy, Music, Theater, Mathematics, Physics, Geometry, Astronomy, Mystery, History, Method (-ology ; and all the words ending in -logos or -logy, such as Cardiology, etc), Analysis, Synthesis, Logic, Technology, Christian (ity), Cosmology, Tragedy, Theory, Practice, Pedagogics, Archaeology, (the very name of) Europe... !!! , and so many other conceptions and activities are taken from the great, harmonius, Greek Civilization. It is at least ingratitude not to realize and openly admit that an economical debt of a few billion euros is much less, or, to be more precise, it is and will forever remain a Civilizational outstanding borrowing and debt . - K. Jasper is a excellent reminder of this Truth, and (a bit ironically at our present days) he is a German, like many many others among the best scientists, philologists, archaeologists, etc who studied thoroughly Greek History and Civilization. Germany's debt and its bond and interrelation to Greece is much more essential and deep than the politicians' and bankers' minds (can or want to) understand...
