About the Author
Jason Shinder was born in Brooklyn, NY in 1955.

His first book of poems, Every Room We Ever Slept In, was a New York Public Library Noted book and his second collection, Among Women, was published in 2001. He is the editor of several anthologies, most recently Tales from the Couch: Writers on Therapy, Best American Movie Writing, and The Poem That Changed America: "Howl" Fifty Years Later.

Shinder teaches in the graduate writing programs at Bennington College and the New School University. Founder and director of the YMCA National Writer's Voice, he is also director of Sundance Institute's Writing Program.

Horrid.

I picked up this book thinking it might contain some nice father-daughter poems. NOT! This is a very dark, dismall, depressing collection of "poetry". Many selections speak of death and poor father-daughter relationships. Not a nice book.

Definitely worth it

I looked at a few different study aids for admin law, and chose Gilbert's because it seemed to break down everything into simple terms. I was not disappointed. Not only does it make admin law easy to understand, but it has several charts and tables that clarified murky areas. For example, there was a chart that broke down the difference between rulemaking and adjudication, and one that explained the various levels of deference. It also has many useful exam tips, as well as review questions and a sample exam with detailed answers. Admin law wasn't my favorite subject (let's face it, it's quite boring), but Gilbert's helped me do pretty well.

The Gilbert series is surely the recommended supplement for all types of legal studies, though this particular book is best utilized in an encyclopedic "Cliff's Notes" sort of way. For reference and practice after the fact, this volume probably can't be beat, thanks to its breakdowns of complex topics into easily digestible chunks, and it's essential for advice on studying for exams. Note that I read this book to prepare for an administrative law class in advance, and found this to be an arduous experience due to the book's non-sequential layout and its assumptions of the reader's knowledge of technical terms and precedents. That's not a demerit because reading the book in that fashion is probably not the publisher's intention. However, I am docking the book one star for some aspects of its technical layout. Sometimes those digestible chunks of information are just too quick for comfort, with important statutes and precedent-setting cases being summed up in single anticlimactic sentences. Meanwhile the index is a real problem, especially with its use of annoying section numbers rather than page numbers. Also, the inclusiveness of the index is spotty at best, with many important and heavily-covered items not appearing in the index at all - most notably the 1981 Model State APA, which is all over the text but completely absent from the index. This book contains most of what you'll need for effective administrative law studies, but you may have some real difficulty in finding it. [~doomsdayer520~]

Exquisite discussion of Nin's own feminism from the self

The book is divided into essay on 3 topics: Women and Men; Writing, Music and Films; and Enchanted Places. This is a very developed sense of Anais - open, radiant, and sincere as always. There are several distinct themes throughout the collection. One of these themes, and to her, the most important, is that women (and men) must first come to know themselves intimately and erotically before they can successfully contribute to any other person, group, society, or otherwise. "In denying the need of intimacy with ourselves, our extroverted culture destroys the possibility of intimacy with others." Nin openly discusses her knowledge of feminism and the roles women have traditionally held in dealing with themselves. She also voices in several essays, her opposition to women's "listing of griefs against men." She emphasizes the rebuilding of the self through poetry and eroticism. "Eroticism is one of the basic means of self-knowledge, as indispensible as poetry."
The book is full of discussion of feminism, eroticism, psychology of the self, our roles in relationships, art, and society. There are 2 fascinating interviews with Nin, several of Nin's essays on other writiers and filmmakers, and her magical recreations of enchanted places. It is a must read for Anais Nin fans. It's short, it's sweet (I couldn't put it down), and intellectually, but most importantly, emotionally fulfilling.

Some books sink into our consciouness

There is no simple way to explain the meaning of human relationships. Anyone who believes that our socialization as human beings can be easily understood should read 'In Favor of the Sensitive Man'.

The twenty seven pieces included cover Nin's main interest: feminine sexuality, human relationships, and eroticism. The book is divided into 3 sections: Women and Men, "Writing, Music, and Films", Enchanted Places. A book as intelligent as this about human interaction had to written by a someone with a background in psychology and a keen inner awareness.

Anais Nin (1903-1977) was born in France. She began to keep a journal of her life in 1914, when her father, composer Joaquin Nin abandon the family. These journals were published in 1966 and lifted Nin from obscurity into the celebrity. Nin studied psychoanalysis under Otto Rank and practiced as a therapist in New York. At some point, she was even a patient of Carl Jung.

As Nin writes, there are books which we read early in life, which sink into our consciouness. I read the famous Nin "dairies" in my teens. I am convinced that Anais' is a brilliant woman and a gifted writer. This book is a confirmation of those beliefs.

For fans of Anais Nin

This is a little collection of essays, each about 3 - 5 pages long. The essays are divided into three sections: Women and Men (essays on feminism, and the eponymous essay, etc.); Writing, Music, and Films (tribute to Ingmar Bergman, a review of a Henry Jaglom film, etc.); and, Enchanted Places (Fez, Bali, etc.).

Two types of people will purchase this slim book: a) admirers of Nin who want every publication of hers on their shelves; and b) admirers of Nin who happen to stumble across it while looking for remaindered books at discount book stores, and make an impulse purchase.

I was the latter. The best thing about the book is that for very little investment in time, I can be exposed to myriad of topics. Her essays on Henry Jaglom and Edgar Varese have piqued my curiosity; the tribute to Ingmar Bergman opened my eyes to films I had not seen (if that makes sense); and the essay on Fez brought back great memories of my one incredulous day there some years ago.

I did not pay much attention to the essays on feminism; as I started to read them, they either felt dated, or I had long since absorbed the mantra.

If nothing else, it's a great conversation opener without taking up much space. Even though I gave it only three stars, I would buy it again; there are some 3-star books that everyone needs to have on their shelves.

Of all of Virginia's diaries (there are five volumes), volumes 3 and 4 are perhaps the most interesting, if only because they span the period in which she wrote her classics such as Orlando, To The Lighthouse, and The Waves (which itself literally spans the period between Vol 3 and Vol 4.)
If you read the collected Diaries and Woman Of Letters by Phyllis Rose, you will gain a vital series of insights into the life and thoughts of this most haunting of female writers.
Whenever I think of Virginia, I always think of the lines from "Vincent" by Don Maclean...
This world was never meant
for one as beautiful as you...
If you have never read any Virginia Woolf, I would respectfully suggest you rent a copy of Sally Potter's Orlando. While Sally takes artistic license with the novel, she has created a very sympathetic work of Art.

Laughed at my hat, worry about clothes, Wells, Vita, Eliot, Ethel, Carrington, Hardy, Yeats, and all the regulars; new oil stove (one turns a dial and it has a thermometer!) books writing and re-writing, selling, stress, the usual depression when books published (but oh how exciting it is to read about) ;lots of feelings recorded, writing a profound pleasure, fame, money, happiness, foreshadow; on it goes in this third volume of the diaries .This wonderful, genius, enchanting, page-turner diary. I highly recommend reading all five of Virginia Woolf's diaries. Never boring or slow. The ultimate stream of consciousness.

Concern and disputes over water have shifted from control of quantity to control of its quality, explains Gottlieb, member of the Metropolitan Water Board of Southern California and coauthor of Empires in the Sun , in a revealing study of the private water industry and public agencies that play a crucial role in economics and politics. The author analyzes how policies effect crop selection, production, labor and land values along with abuses created by vast new government-subsidized irrigation systems. While agriculture and growing urban centers competed for water and power resources, the pollution by sewage, pesticides and industrial contaminants of surface and ground water in urban and rural areas that endangers them both gave rise in the 1970s to a powerful environmental movement that opposes Army Engineers Corps projects, over-exploitation of river systems such as the Colorado, and supports clean water laws to regulate water systems taken over by municipalities from private companies. The results of ongoing debates between private profit and public interest groups over the future of water policy, Gottlieb stresses, will largely determine our environmental priorities.
