A truly expert scholar on tyrannical governments.

This is the third volume of Hannah Arendt's opus on totalitarianism. She is a philosopher, political historian, and one of the few truly expert scholars on the subject of tyrannical governments. While she is controversial, her first hand observations and analysis of Nazi Germany show that she's truly an expert. She is the first to distinguish between despotism and totalitarianism; as dictionaries seldom make the distinction. Totalitarian governments are those despotic government that not only control its people in their actions, but totalitarian governments control the minds of its citizens as well.

A rationale that explains the horrors of totalitarianism.

Hannah Arendt describes totalitarianism as a system of total domination based on a combination of propaganda and terror. She bases it primarily on a policy of keeping the population off balance by systematically arresting and executing members that it decides are "objectively guilty" because of their religion, their economic status, or other arbitrarily selected criteria. She draws a distinction between merely authoritarian and totalitariam regimes based on the arbitrariness of the selection process of its victims. The victims in totalitarian regimes bear no relationship to concerns of security; rather they are based upon some such ideological foundation as race or social status.

Quite Interesting but A Very Difficult Read

This book was on the syllabus for my class titled: The Politics of Violence in 20th Century Europe. Arendt is a well known and respected author but this book is quite dense and very hard to comprehend at times. The introduction, for example, went completely over my head and I am fairly well versed in both European history and politics. Still, she put forth some fascinating arguments, and she is clearly an expert on the topic. One aspect that she addressed in particular was the difference between a Totalitarian government and a Dictatorship. I don't want to give her arguments away, so go and get the book yourself!!
