He focuses on the raising of strawberries, a fruit perpetually in high demand nationwide. Fromartz also examines the use of chemical pesticides, initially lauded as agriculture's great savior until the appearance of Rachel Carson made public their baneful long-term effects. Insight into the organic movement

"Organic Inc" by Samuel Fromartz offers a good introduction to the natural food movement. Written primarily for a popular audience, the book combines research with short histories, case studies and profiles of prominent personalities and companies that have shaped the industry. Although the author's frequent interjections about his own personal experiences and infatuations with organics becomes somewhat annoying, overall the book succeeds in granting insight into the organic movement, its foundational ideals and the possibilities for the future.

Mr. Fromartz provides a brief history of organic farming as an alternative to a deeply flawed agro-industrial production system. We learn that organic methods were developed for ideologically diverse reasons but tends to produce nutritionally superior foods when compared with conventional farming practices. Although yields are usually smaller, the author discusses how organic strawberry farms in California are an example of how organics can outperform when allowing for decreases in energy and fertilizer input.

Mr. Fromartz profiles some of the small organic farmers whose deference to health, environment and community were shaped by the 1960s counterculture. A small but vital network of farmers, distributors and retailers supported a fledgling movement that defined itself by remaining outside the conventional food system. The author describes how such farmers often devised creative marketing strategies by catering to specialty restaurants or selling their produce directly to the public at farmer's markets. As health and safety concerns about pesticides and rBGH growth hormones caught the public's attention, organic farming has become more widespread, emerging as an increasingly important survival strategy for more and more beleagured family farmers.

Mr. Fromartz traces the rise in popularity of pre-packaged salads and refrigerated soy milk to discuss how mass market success has created divisions within the organic community. The development of large-scale organic enterprises has intensified competition and shut down smaller, less efficient producers. Regulation has become a contentious issue, with small farmers seeking to hold large farmers accountable to maintaining high standards. As supermarkets such as Safeway and Wal-Mart have begun to add organic sections to their stores, issues of local production, fair wages and sustainability are heightened. Yet, the author is upbeat in his assessment that small farmers can continue to find their niche by satisfying the needs of the more sophisticated organic consumer.

I recommend this highly readable and informative book to everyone.

A Tale of Two Different Food Visions

Can big agribusiness and local organic farming co-exist and thrive? Samuel Fromartz' new book, Organic, Inc., is a fascinating journey through American agricultural movements, starting around the turn of the century, when farming was still a small-town venture and tracing its development into agribusinesses whose products are now found on most American tables - and the movement into locally grown, organic foods, which represents not so much a return to the past as a return to wholeness and healthy living.

The problem seems to be that the organic movement itself is being challenged by the very agribusinesses it once eschewed. There are really few ways to farm sustainably (which will in most cases mean organically and without genetically modified foods or chemicals) AND use the systems that have come to mean "factory farms" - livestock confined for their entire lifetimes in areas so small they cannot turn around or lie down (chickens, for instance, and pigs), never mind see the sunshine or walk around and enjoy fresh air, eating what they would eat if humans were not around.

Agrisystems, as they exist today, are basically unhealthy - and unsustainable. But they are profitable, and make it easy for "food" (if you want to call it that) to arrive at your table packaged neatly and processed to death. Rare are the children being raised today who knows what "food" looks like in its natural state. Do they know what a carrot or beet looks like, while it's growing in the ground? Do they know that the hamburger they eat comes from a being that has a face and makes sounds, and may (depending on your viewpoint) be sentient?

Being removed from the source and sight and smells and knowledge of how your food comes to you - how it was grown, and what has happened to it all along the way - makes for some dangerous possibilities. We cannot know (or control very well, despite so-called legal safeguards meant to protect us) where our food has been, before it reaches our table, unless we have grown it ourselves (which is not easy or possible for most people) or have bought it from someone in our community whose farming practices we know - and could actually go there and see.

Fromartz comes from a reporting background, and knows how to dig out factoids that will leave you breathless for the sheer scope of what has happened to our food and our food production systems. It should leave you with both concern and hope, at the end.

Organic, Inc. Is not exactly the "story of food" but it truly is the tale of two different visions for how food is produced and made available to consumers. One (local biodynamic farming) is sustainable; the other (multinational, corporate agribusiness) is not.

Fromartz carefully traces how we got where we are, without suggesting where we will go in the future. However, his bias for a sustainable natural foods future is clear - and it's one I share. If you care about what you eat, how it got here, and whether you will be able to find more like it tomorrow, you should read this book, think about what it means, and DO something about what you believe is the best course of action for a world where what we eat determines how healthy we and our future generations will be.

A place for organic in your life

When you think of organic foods, do you mentally picture aging hippies in co-ops, small roadside stands, and stores with counter-cultural values? That image was probably valid until the 1980's, but has rapidly been displaced since.

Organic foods sales grew at 20 percent per year during the 1990s, attracting the attention of the food business. In the process, organic went mainstream and became an accepted niche market at grocery chains and even big-box retailers such as WalMart and Target. The author's real question is whether this represents "progress" or "problem" for fans of simpler lifestyles and all things organic.

The documented answer is some of both. Fromartz is a highly accomplished business journalist who takes a (mostly) unsentimental look at the business of marketing organic foods. Interviewing small and large merchants plus the `man on the street,' Fromartz discovers that organic is profitable and growing, yet at the same time poses a risk to traditional fans who are unlikely to shop at big boxes for the food they know and love. While the mainstream consumer `discovers' organic, the core organic customer may be wondering if she can trust anyone, anywhere, any more. This dilemma, the author notes, resembles putting up "a neon sign for an organic Twinkie."

After an entertaining and excellent investigative look at the business of organic, Fromartz holds out hope that both kinds of organic - mass market and small market - may find ways to thrive. For the core customer, related values like humane treatment of animals, fair market pricing, and sustainable agriculture may become more relevant indicators of value than the simple phrase `organic.' These savvy shoppers may continue to trust the small, unique brands and identities of traditional organic suppliers.

Meanwhile a certain amount of industrialization, mass-market methods and persuasive advertising messages can be expected to boost sales of anything termed `organic' in the aisles of a mega-retailer near you, where the organic business is currently booming.

Whether you like your organic "all natural" or with "always low prices," you'll be likely to find it readily available. Which type you choose will say a lot about your personal values and expectations.

Before Star Wars there were starry-eyed dreamers

Thank you George Pendle for writing this book. As the daughter of Jack Parson's best friend, Ed Forman, I grew up with a garage-full of explosives that my mother prayed wouldn't go off, fragments of this story as my somewhat exotic but sad family history, and my father's heartbreak that he and Jack were excluded and scorned just as the dreams they delighted in and sweated over took flight in reality.

Until Strange Angel, everything written about Jack and JPL has either been mainstream such as Theodore von Karman's "The Wind and Beyond," or pulp occultist like "Sex and Rockets." Strange Angel tells the untold human stories and re-tells some of the known with the insight of a scholar and empathy of an artist. Pendle illuminates more than the life of a rocket scientist. He captures a vivid era of American thought and aspiration, the adolescence of L.A.---the city world-famous for conjuring dreams, a cast of wild-eyed dreamers who truly believed the sky's the limit, and the cynical forces opposing them.

Pendle is fair-handed with the occult elements of Jack's story. He doesn't sensationalize or condemn. Based off of the description I knew that I would have an inturests in the subject matter but I wasn't fully prepared for the she

Strange Angel was an angel of a surprise. Based off of the description I knew that I would have an inturests in the subject matter but I wasn't fully prepared for the sheer delight I got from this work. The writing was good, the research sound as far as I cared to check up on it, and the tone was appropriate for the subject matter.

Probably the best part of reading this book was the broad range of subjects that the subject of the book and myself have in common - why was this so delightful? Because this book interacts with people and movements that I care quite a bit about but don't see interact very often. Would recommend this book to fans of silence fiction, occultism, freedom culture, the history of science and anyone who enjoys a good old fashion slice of Americana.

Much more than rockets

The history of the development of rockets is interesting, but this book is much more than that! It is about the early 20th C in the US's scientific, political, economic and social history. All of these are presented through the life history of one central character, but we also get to meet many other players.

Wonderful

When an ingenious hacker infiltrates the Vatican's computer system and leaves a message on the Pope's desktop imploring the Vatican to save the soon-to-be demolished Our Lady of the Tears church in Seville, the Vatican deploys its version of a special operations expert in the formidable personage of Fr. Lorenzo Quart. Quart is handsome, rugged and epitomizes the business end of the Vatican while promoting a no-nonsense vision of the Church in Rome that exactly opposes the cozy sanctuary feel of Our Lady of the Tears. The congregation of the old and crumbling church believe that the building itself has an uncanny sense of survival; two murders or accidents have already taken place; the victims, people involved in the church's scheduled demolition. World-toughened Quart believes no such thing, he attributes the church's strange staying power to its motley crew of supporters: an old renegade pastor, his young computer-savy associate, a art-restoring nun from California, a willful yet beautiful aristocrat and her old-fashioned mother with a fetish for Coca Cola. The opposition is just as real--a jilted banker amd his hilarious stoogelike henchmen who envision a more self-serving and lucrative edifice on the Our Lady of Tears property.

The plot however is secondary in this most wonderful of character studies. As Quart discovers the different truths that center around the old church, he ekes out the meaning that the Church has not only for its individual protectors, but also for himself. Like any truely good piece of literature the main character undergoes some metamorphosis; Quart's is profound and well worth the read through the stirring backdrop of beautiful Seville.

Unlike some of the other reviewers, I find the "Seville Communion" incompariable when looked at in the same context as "The Flanders Panel" and "Club Dumas". While I liked these other novels, I was moved by the Seville Communion and I recommend it to anyone who enjoys their characters made of flesh and blood, not just stereotypical ideals.

The mystery is secondary

Ostensibly, this is the story of a hacker breaking into the Vatican computer system and appealing to the Pope to save a small, neighbourhood church in Seville from being shut down. Father Lorenzo Quart is sent by the Vatican to Seville to uncover just who this hacker, who goes by the code name Vespers, really is.
But really, the mystery is incidental. For me, the book's raison d'etre wasn't really to discover who Vespers was, but to present the reader with vividly drawn characters and situations. The scenes that portrayed the slowly unfolding relationship between Quart and Maccarena, or the funny-sad trio of would-be criminals, or Don Priamo, the aged priest who would sacrifice all for his simple faith were what kept me reading.
I will definitely read more by Perez-Reverte.

Even his worst works are better that others bests

In my opinion The Seville Communion (La piel del tambor) is the worst of Perez-Reverte novels. Nevertheless it deserves 4 stars because Mr. Arturo is playing in a different league and even his failures contain countless moments of magic.

The main handicap of the novel is his main character, Father Quart. The super-attactive, strong, charming priest working for a kind of Vatican Secret Service lacks credibility and his romance with the aristocratic lady is somehow predictable (remember the atractive symbology professor of The Da Vinci Code? It is the same kind of dull character).

So, how can a novel stand the weakness of the main character? Response: thanks to a fantastic pleiade of secondary characters: The three villians are simply wonderful, the old priest is touching, the banker is charming.

And then you have some pearls of Reverte's mythology, this peculiar mixture of History and adventure (better, this underlining of the adventures that History hides): pirates in the Cuban War, haunted barroque churches... this is the Perez-Reverte we love and this is what he is good at: treasures, war, puzzles and riddles. Reverte, leave the religious-love stories for those that lack your talent to tell a tale. The descriptions of Seville, its magic and charm, are also a good element of the book

In any case, it would be worth to read this novel if only for two magic moments: the conversation of the two priests about Astronomy and the hilarious moment were the vilians are "set on fire".

Woolf addressed the status of women, and women artists in particular, in this famous essay which asserts that a woman must have money and a room of her own if she is to write. Woolf celebrates the work of women writers, including Jane Austen, George Eliot, and the Brontes. In the final section Woolf suggests that great minds are androgynous. She argues that intellectual freedom requires financial freedom, and she entreats her audience to write not only fiction but poetry, criticism, and scholarly works as well. In 1928, Virginia Woolf was asked to speak on the topic of "women and fiction". The result, based upon two papers she delivered to literary societies at Newnham and Girton in October of that year, was "A Room of One's Own", an extended essay on women as both writers of fiction and as characters in fiction. And, while Woolf suggests that, "when a subject is highly controversial-and any question about sex is that-one cannot hope to tell the truth," her essay is, in fact, an extraordinarily even-handed, thoughtful and perceptive reflection on the topic.
Woolf begins with a simple and enigmatic opinion: "A woman must have money and a room of her own if she is to write fiction; and that, as you will see, leaves the great problem of the true nature of woman and the true nature of fiction unresolved." From this spare beginning, Woolf deftly explores the difference between how women had been portrayed in fiction, and how they actually lived in the world, during the preceding centuries. "A very queer, composite being emerges. Imaginatively, she is of the highest importance; practically she is completely insignificant. She pervades poetry from cover to cover; she is all but absent from history. She dominates the lives of kings and conquerors in fiction; in fact she was a slave of any boy whose parents forced a ring upon her finger."
The source of dissonance between how women were portrayed in fiction, and how they actually lived, was the fact that most fiction prior to the nineteenth century was written by men. As Woolf astutely points out, "[i]t was strange to think that all the great women of fiction were, until Jane Austen's day, not only seen by the other sex, but seen only in relation to the other sex." Woolf's observation is no feminist polemic; it is, rather, an incisive comment on how fiction was impoverished when it was written only by men.
Even when fiction was written by women, it was powerfully influenced by patriarchal notions of virtue and the proper role of women. Thus, Woolf suggests there could be no female Shakespeare in sixteenth century England because no women would be tolerated who lived in the real world like the Bard. "No girl could have walked to London and stood at a stage door and forced her way into the presence of actor-managers without doing herself violence and suffering an anguish which may have been irrational-for chastity may be a fetish invented by societies for unknown reasons-but were none the less inevitable." Indeed, this "relic of the sense of chastity" dictated that more daring female authors-George Eliot, George Sand, Currer Bell-maintain anonymity as late as the nineteenth century.
When female writers did find a "room of their own," they were still limited by social and cultural imperatives. Thus, the first of the great women novelists-Jane Austen, the Brontes, George Eliot-wrote largely from the drawing room, not from the experiences of the larger world-the very conditions of their writing life being as cramped as the their restricted lives. As Woolf notes, in commenting on Charlotte Bronte, "[s]he knew, no one better, how enormously her genius would have profited if it had not spent itself in solitary visions over distant fields; if experience and intercourse and travel had been granted her. But they were not granted, they were withheld."
Ultimately, Woolf suggests that the "true" nature of women will only be approached in fiction when women are sufficiently independent-not only in a financial sense, but in the sense of being freed from societal and cultural restraints-to explore the quotidian, the everyday lives of people in the world. This is the aspect of the fictional world that, in Woolf's view, was absent from the male-dominated novel prior to the nineteenth century.
Woolf further suggests that the "true" nature of fiction is expressed only through those writers who can transcend their narrow sexual roles-become "man-womanly" or "woman-manly"-so as to convey the fullness of the real world. As Woolf notes, "Coleridge perhaps meant this when he said that a great mind is androgynous. It is when this fusion takes place that the mind is fully fertilised and uses all of its faculties." Based on this criterion, Woolf promulgates her own canon of English male writers, a canon which includes Shakespeare, Keats, Sterne, Cowper, Lamb, Coleridge, and Proust (who "was perhaps wholly androgynous, if not perhaps a little too much of a woman").
"A Room of One's Own" is, in sum, a fascinating, thoughtful and perceptive essay on women and fiction written by one of the Twentieth century's most formidable writers and thinkers, a woman who truly succeeded in creating a room of her own in the canon of modern English literature.

Accessible Woolf!

Some of Virginia Woolf's writing is difficult for the modern reader to plough through - loooong sentences, convoluted construction, excessive naval gazing (in fictional form). But A Room of One's Own, a very long essay about feminism, independence, writing, and becoming one's own person, is actually quite readable, quite educational, and quite wonderful. The reader, at least this one, feels she's in the presence of a great mind at work as it ruminates on and on about these topics in a somewhat rambling but engaging personal reflection. Although written in 1929, the situation for women artists hasn't changed all that much, so it's far from dated.
A must-read.

Witty and Intelligent Argument on Behalf of Female Writers

Virginia Woolf is a writer of intelligence and grace. A Room of One's Own is a skinny little treasure of a book with words and wisdom that will stay with the reader long after it is read. The essay contained in the book is the result of two papers that Ms. Woolf read to the Arts Society at newnham and Odtaa at Girton (England) in October of 1928. She was asked to speak about the topic of "Women and Fiction", and after doing so, she expanded her papers and later published them as this book.
Woolf begins the essay by writing, "I soon saw that [the subject of women and fiction] had one fatal drawback. I should never be able to come to a conclusion. I should never be able to fulfil what is, I understand, the first duty of a lecturer- to hand you after an hour's discourse a nugget of pure truth to wrap up between the pages of your notebooks and keep on the mantelpiece for ever. All I could do was to offer you an opinion upon one minor point- a woman must have money and a room of her own if she is to write fiction... At any rate, when a subject is highly controversial- and any question about sex is that- one cannot hope to tell the truth. One can only show how one came to hold whatever opionion one does hold. One can only give one's audience the chance of drawing their own conslusions as they observe the limitations, the prejudices, the idiosyncrasies of the speaker."
It is in this straightforward and honest manner that Woolf writes about women and fiction. Although the speech was given and the book was published in 1929, all of its points are still important for women- and especially women writers and artists- today. In A Room of One's Own Woolf examines classic literary works of the past and wonders why most, until the 19th Century, were written by men, and why most of the works published by women in the 19th Century were fiction. She comes to the logical conclusion that women in the past had little to no time to write because of their childbearing and raising responsibilities. There is also the fact that they were not educated and were forbidden or discouraged from writing. When they did begin to write, they only had the common sitting rooms of Elizabethan homes to do so in, which did not provide much solitude or peace of mind, as it was open to any interruption and distraction that came along.
Woolf argues passionately that true independence comes with economic well-being. This is true for countries, governments, individuals, and writers, especially female writers. Without financial security it is impossible for any writer to have the luxury of writing for writing's sake. It is also a very inspiring book for any aspiring write to read. I end this review with Virginia Woolf's own hopes for women in the future:
"... I would ask you to write all kinds of books, hesitating at no subject however trivial or however vast. By hook or by crook, I hope that you will possess yourselves of money enough to travel and to idle, to contemplate the future or the past of the world, to dream over books and loiter at street corners and let the line of thought dip deep into the stream."

The FIFA World Cup is the planet's biggest event. Not sporting event-event, period, writes Trecker in this in-your-face firsthand account of the 2006 World Cup in Germany. Trecker, Fox Sports soccer columnist, is passionate about the game (Munich exploded in the sixth minute when Phillip Lahm, employing his signature move, cut from the left side into the area to sink a powerful right-footed shot into the top of Jose Porras's net) and the players (What makes Zidane truly special is not that he can control the pace of a match-there are other holding midfielders in the game-but that his motions and instincts are artful, serene, and beautiful). Unfortunately, Trecker, while covering the sport, the games and the '06 World Cup comprehensively, falls prey to clichéd sports writing. He spends much time describing brothels (in South Korea and Germany), topless women and drunken debauchery-of both fans and the media alike. In the run-up to the 2006 World Cup, U.S. publishers offered many books explaining the World Cup, soccer, and why players aren't allowed to use their hands. Certainly, many Americans still need the help, but books timed to coincide with the event lacked a crucial element: results. The U.S. team went home early, but journalist Trecker went the distance. His firsthand account of soccer madness is lively and intelligent, as full of funny anecdotes as it is opinionated commentary. He doesn't stint the historical context, either, detailing not only the history of the tournament but changing cultural and political attitudes toward it. And if he occasionally provides a little too much background—the U.S. history of the game is a book in itself (see Jim Haner's Soccerhead, 2006)—he goes some other writers one better by placing the tournament in another crucial context: financial (because money is what makes the world of sport go round). This comes too late for 2006 World Cup newbies, of course, but it proves to be the book they were waiting for. Graff, Keir

Pleasure and Substance

I had no grasp of how little I knew of US Soccer, much less the world cup, until reading Trecker's book. It is a "stay up all night 'cause it's so engaging" flight through the politics, sociology, finance, underbelly and countless freaks which color the world football stage. It doesn't just tell the story (and it does, with great entertainment value); it gives you an understanding of all the forces behind the story, and why it matters.

Quick read - but stick to soccer

I picked this book up on my way out of a Borders store, not having previously heard anything about it. The title and the short description on the back, however, intrigued me as I spent 4 weeks at home in Germany last summer.

Trecker does a good job shedding light on the workings of FIFA, the US soccer federation and the problems the sport faces in the US. The soccer tidbits in the book are a good read, but he gets much too shallow when he tries to analyse participating countries, their followers and customs. He should have left the judgement out of this book (or analyse deeper) - after all, why do I care about his inability to buy medicine in the host country, something he goes into some detail about? And while he complains multiple times about perceived transportation problems he makes no effort to investigate the underlying reasons - good journalism reads differently.

While I found the concept (reading a book about the 2006 World Cup) intriguing, the execution fell short of my expectations.

Disappointing

Before I begin, it would probably be wise to let everything out. After all, if a reader understands where I am coming from, they can take my observations with the appropriate grains of salt.

First off, at one time, I was writing for any number of soccer sites, including MLSnet.com. I gained somewhat of a reputation from my work at the now defunct InternetSoccer.com. In some circles I guess I was considered a "journalist," but I laugh at that one, as I personally wouldn't sully the reputation of the many good real journalists out there by lumping myself in with them. Anyhow, thanks to my work, I had a chance to interact with a good many soccer journalists, including the author of "Love & Blood: At the World Cup with the Footballers, Fans, and Freaks," Mr. Jamie Trecker.

Among the many of us who intently follow the sport in the US, there is this sort of love/hate relationship with Mr. Trecker. On the one hand, we value and appreciate the few professional soccer writers in the US. On the other, Mr. Trecker has been one of the most outspoken critics of Major League Soccer, US Soccer, and anything else related to the US game. Like anything, some of his criticism is justified, some of it is not. Many of the disagreements many have with him is the fact has to do with personality, his argumentative style, and his pretentiousness. Throw in a penchant for the perceived lack of substance and his running loose with facts, you can understand why his name causes many soccer fans to roll their eyes.

There are other reasons as well, but if you are reading "Love & Blood" you are probably well aware of the issues. In fairness, Mr. Trecker has always stated that his objective was to cover the sport the way other sports are covered. Meaning, his role as an investigative journalist lends himself to constantly question, wondering what the true motives are to any decision, a healthy skepticism for the marketing spin that most soccer organizations have fallen prey to, and a belief that there is a better way (Even if that better way often seems to be his way...).

With all that said, let me get on to his first book, "Love & Blood." I bought this through Amazon. My view is that regardless of my opinion of the author, if a professional soccer writer in the US is going to take the time to write a book, I will read it. Perhaps the day will come when Bob Costas writes a book on the game. When it does, I won't be so inclined to buy anymore. In the meantime, with so few out there, I will buy. I even own a copy of Chris Gallutia's "Addicted to Black & Gold: One Fan's Year With His Club and the World's Most Popular Sport."

Honestly, I was excited to read it, and truly wanted to be able to say that this was the great American soccer book. Any book that combines a fans love of the game, married with observations about the world cup, and some inside views from a journalist, well, the combination sounds like a great read. Unfortunately, it did not meet my expectations.

There are two parts of this book - one I thoroughly enjoyed, and the other that I considered to be pretentious, amateurish, elitist, and at times rambling. The first part are his discussions of being on the ground in Germany, interacting with fans, running around the country. Far from glamour, there were moments where you realize being a journalist at the World Cup must be awful. Covering games, dealing with the pomposity of FIFA, you prefer to be a fan... that's if you can get tickets. To his credit, Mr. Trecker seems to have jumped head first into his subject. His liver probably was the worse for wear considering the amount of times he was stuck with fans at a beer garden or some other watering hole.

His penchant for staying in places that were less than ideal were also amusing, albeit a bit tired after awhile. There are only so many stories one can read about prostitutes, before it becomes old hat. His story of getting to his hotel in Berlin just before the final was truly funny. While walking up the stairs to his room, luggage and wife in tow, he stumbled across a film crew making a gay porn movie. He even had a chance to enjoy a beverage with one of the members of the crew. Truly a classic story if I have ever heard one. I wonder if there is not a XXX rated movie out there with his name in the credits for having helped get a can of coke for one of the crew.

There were some observations about the game that I considered to be simplistic. For example, in discussing the World Cup in Japan and Korea in 2002, Mr. Trecker writes - "Without their imposing stadiums and fans behind them, quite a number of European teams were revealed as very average." While I am certain this had something to do with it, I think the difficulties of the Europeans to deal with this World Cup, the hectic scheduling that occurred prior, and soccer fatigue have been well documented.

Interestingly enough, early in the book as he comments on the US game, Mr. Trecker makes some interesting observations. Among them is a tacit recognition that the game has evolved quite significantly over the last 15 years. For him, there has been a sea change, and 2006 it was noticeable. He writes, "Back then (2002) America's Pro League was still considered shaky; today no one asks if (or when) MLS is going to close its doors." What he failed to mention that he was one of those most vocal authorities on the demise of MLS. In fact, I started writing because of an article he wrote in 1999 extolling the greatness of the NASL. He does the same to a lesser degree in this book, but I think I, others, and history has shown that the NASL wasn't as great as what we would like to believe.

Regardless, his unadulterated experiences at the cup is certainly worth reading. But the second part of the book, the part that I certainly could have done without, was his feable effort at historical analysis, melted together with some social criticism, and spiced up with a pinch of politics. These were the parts I considered to be "pretentious, amateurish, elitist, and at times rambling." What struck me was how much of this took away from the soccer experiences. In an effort to add some color, Mr. Trecker often would do deep dives into the local history, it's impact on modern Germany, and ultimately how it was manifest in the Cup. Unfortunately, Mr. Trecker's history book only went back to World War II. Certainly a major event as it relates to modern German society, but I was amazed at what he managed to exclude - Germany's impact on European intellectual history, home of Martin Luther and the Protestant Reformation, the Marshall Plan. Obviously, this is not a history book but a collection of his observations. But in telling the stories he did, using the history he chose to focus one, Mr. Trecker revealed his myopic point of view that he has often been criticized for.

There were a host of references, whether in the actual text, or his liberal use of footnotes, that had my head scratching. In one footnote, where he discusses how teams came to get their kit colors (Page 25), he seems to give legitimacy to the reasoning behind Australia's for using Brazilian colors. He adds in, almost mockingly, why the US never wore the color red in its uniform for the longest time. If, as Mr. Trecker rightly suggests throughout his book, that history does play a significant role in how things are, then it is perfectly legitimate for a US Soccer President to ban red from the uniforms because he thought the color was "commie."

I don't think he was trying to be intentionally funny, but I laughed when I read his comparison between the worlds of 1972 and 2006. Mind you, not the soccer world, but THE world. Bottom line is that there were similarities - "unpopular American Presidents fighting ill-considered wars, a global energy crisis, a war raging in the Middle East." Reminds me of that email that "eerily" compares how similar President Lincoln and President Kennedy were - both became president and both were assassinated. This is the sort of thing that struck me as amateurish. I remember sitting in grad school arguing similar absurdities. It was all a part to sound so intelligent, so grasping of big ideas, so capable of being the next great American historian... all the while, the reality was that we were naïve, selective in our readings, opinionated, and myopic.

There is so much more, but I don't want to go point for point. You can support Mr. Trecker (one of the few US Soccer Writers in the US) by buying "Love & Blood: At the World Cup with the Footballers, Fans, and Freaks," and finding them on your own. To his credit Mr. Trecker has blazed a trail for others to follow. And perhaps, someday, thanks to his initiative we may even see a soccer book by Bob Costas.

a powerful arguement for democracy

E.M. Forster is better known as a writer than as a great thinker.
This volume contains most of his nonfiction writings and thus introduces us to a different side of Forster. Some of the pieces, it is true, are on writing, but most relevant for today is probably his political thought.
Forster provides us with a window into the world of the nineteen thirties where democracy was perceived as a fragile and precious object in danger of being blown away by the forces of fascism and communism. Still, in "What I believe" and "Three Anti-Nazi broadcasts" Forster reaffirms his belief in this form of government.
Democracy is important, he argues, because it allows criticism. He argues that "parliament is often sneered at because it is a Talking Shop. I believe in it because it is a talking shop. I believe in the Private Member who makes himself a nuisance. He gets snubbed and is told that he is cranky or ill- informed, but he does expose abuses which would otherwise never have been mentioned".
Forster argues forcefully against hero worship and against the cult of "great men". Although rooted in a bygone era, much of his thinking retains some relevance today.

Excellent Writing, thought some subjects are now obsolete

This is a collection of essays by Forster, the authors of "A Passage to India", "A Room with a View", etc., etc., about numerous contemporary subjects -- from his 1930s and wartime essays, lectures, and broadcasts against fascism and for democracy, to his recollections of India, to his reviews of the works of his generations' poets and writers -- the best and longest (2/3rds or so) part of the book -- on people as varied as Lawrence of Arabia and Virginia Wolf.

Some of these essays are general, pro-democracy and pro-culture, anti-fascist writing. They are perfectly competent, but are the weakest part of the book (hence only four stars). I am not saying this is due to Forster's lack of talent. It is, paradoxically, because what he said turned out to be right: OF COURSE fascism and communism are against human rights, against individuality, against freedom and all we hold dear, isn't it?. But that is clear to us now; it was not at all clear to all when Foerster wrote most of these essays, in the 1930s. It is sometimes hard for us to remember how enticing fascism and communism, with their apparent success, looked to many -- by no means all of them stupid or evil -- at the time, when democracy seemed to be on its last legs. Similarly, OF COURSE writing, of poetry, of music, should continue in wartime. Isn't preserving culure what the war was all about? Yet in 1940 and 1941, when these essays were written, it was not at all clear Britain will survive, and any penny spent on culture seemed a penny less for the war effort. He said what was obvious in 1950 -- but already in 1930 or 1940. No mean feat.

Much more interesting, for us, are his reviews of the work of contemporary writers, Forster was a humanist in the real sense of the word. He loved India -- and by that I mean he loved Indians, too, not just the exotic scenery. He was not racist at all, seeing women, Greeks, Indians, and Muslims (including Indian Muslims), as his full equals in poetic power, intelligence, and achievement, as his essays on Woolf, Cavafy, or Syed Ross Masood show -- quite a remakable characteristic for a man of his time. Why? Because he cared for culture above all. He cared nothing for politics, for race, for feminism (or male superiority). He cared only for individual human beings, and for their spiritual, poetic qualities, at that -- not their political achievements. So whomever you were, it was whether you are a cultured person that mattered ot Forster, and what kind of work you did as an artist that he cared about.

This comes out most strongly in his essay, "What I Believe", in which he envisions a society of "Aristocrats" -- culturally superior, senisitive and intelligent people. Such people (of which it is not at all clear he is vain enough to include himself) tend to avoid government jobs and positions of power, and march on, resisting society's desire to make them serve "useful", government ends, instread of "useless" things like, say, poetry. But one poem by Cavafly, a clerk in an Alexandrian (in Egypt) railroad stations in "real life", is worth any number of powerful go-getter master-of-the-universe lawyers: he was one of those who belong to this "invincible, yet not a victorious" army. Far fewer peoples would have known about Dr. Samuel Johnson today if Boswell, instead of looking after his career in the courts, had not preferred to spend his time with him. Clearly a club to which women or Indians could easily belong, indeed, perhaps more easily than the career-oriented white men of the time.

Thus the essays in the book. He was a close friend of T. E. Lawrence ("Lawrence of Arabia"), who surely told him some interesting stories about his exploits. Yet he (Forster) dismisses in a few lines what Lawrence did politically. He cared far more for the fact that he was an old romantic who ran away from civlization deliberately, and of the curious qualities of his book, "The Seven Pillars of Wisdom". Similarly, he dismisses Woolf's political, i.e., feminist work (correctly I think) as her weakest, and appreciating her literary and poetic achievements in her other works, such as "To the Lighthouse". (He thinks she was a poet who wrote prose, a very interesting view). Or he sees Butler's satirical novel "Erwohn" ("Nowhere"), a retelling of Moore's utopia -- where the hero, with his friend Yram ("Mary") and the Nosnibor ("Robinson") family, where he satirizes Victorian society -- as far more important for its literary qualities than for whatever political effect it had or injustices it pointed out.

This is the exact opposite of today's most popular view, that literature and culture must serve political ends -- for him, there is no point for politics if it does not serve culture and literature . An extremely interesting read of extremely interestesting opinions, by a great writer who was also a great critic.

More Relevant Than Ever Before

In times when it seems all too easy to give away our rights in exchange for largely virtual safety, the voice of E. M. Forster sounds more loud and clear than ever before. In his essays written before and after the Second World War Forster discusses the dangers that we are facing today. Forster's solution may seem naive to our cynical age but only if we don't try to get to the bottom. This book is a lesson we still have not learned - always worth another look.
