About the Author
Erich Heller (March 27, 1911 — November 5, 1990) was a British essayist, known particularly for his critical studies in German-language philosophy and literature of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
Heller was born at Chomutov (German: Komotau) in Bohemia (then within Austria-Hungary, now the Czech Republic), to the family of a Jewish physician. He graduated a doctor of law from the German University in Prague (Deutsche Universität in Prag, Juridische Fakultät) on February 11, 1935, at the age of 23. In 1939 he emigrated to the United Kingdom, where he began his professional career as a Germanist, being active at Cambridge and London (England) and at Swansea (Wales). Heller became a British subject in 1947. From 1960 onwards he was based in the United States, primarily at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois, where he was initially Professor of German, and subsequently Avalon Professor of the Humanities until his retirement in 1979.

The Plight of the West

Nihilism flickers with its black fire throught out the pages of this book and godlessness attends it as Erich Heller attempts to provide a spiritual physiognomy for the age.
Goethe is the major figure of Heller's meditations and Nietzsche who tries to forge a new soul in a world where Goethe's project to head off rationalism and scientism has failed. Heller spends much useful time in explaining the reasons for Goethe's attempt to found an anti-newtonian science. Fittingly, the name of William Blake makes a brief appearance.
Goethe saw the inhuman dimensions of the scientific project and where it was going with its inevitable war on poetic language and the construction of humane truths.
Rilke and Yeats are also stars of the book, particularly Rilke who creates Nietzschean poetry, poetry that exalts a radical inwardness against a god-free world.
I cannot diagram in this review the myriads of ideas and observations that make this book, The Disinherited Mind, so relevant to our own story. Erich Heller was one of the great titan critics of a century full of so many - Ernst Robert Curtius, Erich Auerbach, Theodor Adorno, Walter Benjamin, and so many more. Heller read literature within a massive scope of historical awareness. His exegis is never dull but always as pertinent and relevant as the details in great adventure fiction.

Profound reflections on the human situation

Heller's ostensbile subject is Modern German Literature and Thought. But his profound insights on Goethe, Nietzsche, Kafka, Schopenhauer, Rilke, raise questions about the meaning of creative culture in general. He opens with a divided Goethe fearing that his mind and energy are being lost to Poetry and about to be given wholly to Science. Heller throughout has the sense that Science cannot really give the whole truth about our Reality, and in fact in its analyses fragments the world hopelessly. His sense of a world without wholeness is connected to a feeling of loss no doubt connected with his own experience as refugee from Nazi Germany, as a Jew who has been displaced from the culture and world which was once his home. He is a first- rate interpreter of Kafka and in this book he focuses on a reading of 'The Castle'. This book is rich in thought and also historical information and will be a real treat to anyone for whom ventures of the mind are the most important adventures of all.

German Literature Interpreted For Readers of English

Arguably the most important book of lit crit of German literature published in English in the 20th century. (Since I don't read German, I can't say the most important on the subject.)
Heller's essay on Kafka is one of the best I've read. He's equally discerning on Nietzsche and though my knowledge of Goethe is minimal, I'm sufficiently impressed by Heller's remark to want to read more Goethe.
Rilke is also one of his subjects, but I admit to a lack of interest in Rilke, mainly because I don't think his poetry can be understood or appreciated by a non-German speaker.
Definitely a book to own for those who want some perspicacious insights into German literature but who can't read the language.
