An Absolutely Fascinating Adventure, Not To Be Missed

I will say this right at the outset: This is one of the best books about a scientific topic, written for a popular audience, that I have ever read (and, believe me, I've read a lot of them). If there is such a thing as a genuine "page-turner" in the field of popular science, "An Ocean of Air" certainly qualifies to be in such a category. I can understand why Gabrielle Walker is advertised as an award-winning science writer. If I offered an award for fine writing, especially about a subject as complex as the earth's atmosphere, she would top my list of potential recipients. In my considered opinion (and thankfully!), it just goes to prove that being an "academic" and possessing a Ph.D. (which she has) does not condemn one to write books forever as one writes a doctoral dissertation (which tend to be very stilted and hopelessly boring).

Creative-writing instructors have always told me that the first sentence and paragraph of a book are most important. They are the "hook" that grabs the reader and propels him or her forward onto page two, then page three, then page four, and so on, until the reader reaches the last page, excited but exhausted, forced to exhale a lung's-worth of air, declaring "what a wild ride!" Walker's book provided that experience for me, and I am not exaggerating.

The story opens twenty miles above New Mexico with Joe Kittinger "hanging in the sky." It is the 16th of August in 1960. (I had just graduated from college.) Then, "For eleven minutes he remained there, poised in an open gondola that twisted slowly beneath a vast helium balloon." But, "Far below, where Earth's surface curved away to the horizon, a glowing blue halo stood out against the blackness of space." Then, on the next page we are informed, Kittinger "took a single breath of pure oxygen from within his tightly sealed helmet . . . And then he jumped."

Now, we're talking twenty miles up in the air here! The highest I've ever been is around eight miles up, courtesy of a small private jet taking me to Colorado in 2005 for a philosophy conference. I was nervous during that hours-long journey because I have a real problem with heights. So, I was immediately "hooked," as they say, by Walker's opening paragraphs. I could visualize exactly what was taking place and how Kittinger must have felt. Finally the author tells us: "Captain Joseph W. Kittinger Jr. of the U.S. Air Force is the man who fell to Earth and lived. Nobody has ever managed to emulate his feat."

The author's point in telling this little anecdote is to illustrate for us something important about the "ocean" of air above us and around us. As Walker says: ". . .[T]he message from Kittinger's flight, and from every one of the pioneers who have sought to understand our atmosphere" is, "We don't just live 'in' the air. We live 'because' of it." This anecdote, by the way, is told in the Prologue to the book. The reader hasn't even begun Chapter One yet. But Walker has, indeed, provided the "hook" that will force any reader who loves adventure stories to continue on through the next seven chapters where, of course, we will encounter many other "pioneers" in this narrative about the ocean of air and its mysteries.

Many of these characters will be familiar to most knowledgeable readers: Galileo Galilei, Robert Boyle, Joseph Priestley, Antoine Lavoisier, Christopher Columbus, James Van Allen, Blaise Pascal, and Guglielmo Marconi. Many will be unfamiliar to most readers, as a few were to me: Evangelista Torricelli, Joseph Black, Svante Arrhenius, William Ferrel, Oliver Heaviside, and Gilbert Plass. Even Wiley Post comes into the story, that daring and courageous pilot, an early aviation pioneer, who was killed (along with famous American humorist Will Rogers) in a 1935 airplane crash in Alaska. As the reader can see, the list of those involved in this fascinating chronicle about our ocean of air range from philosophers and scientists to mathematicians and world explorers, with an aviator or two thrown in for good measure.

Walker's book, to be sure, is mainly about the ocean of air above us and around us which permits us to live and thrive; but it certainly is about more than just that. She discusses topics like climate change, the effects of chlorofluorocarbons on the atmosphere, carbon dioxide levels and their repercussions, and other subjects one would expect in a book such as this one. For me, however, the important information that the author provides is about "how" we have come to think about our ocean of air "through" the insights and experiments of the historical figures who were themselves enraptured with the phenomenon. In other words, I was mostly captured by the "history" of the intellectual thought behind our evolving understanding of the atmosphere wherein we reside.

This book ends with an appropriate flourish in the Epilogue, an anecdote as compelling as the one in the Prologue. It is October 2003. This is when "a series of explosions rocked the outer surface of the sun. A massive flare flash fried Earth with x-rays equivalent to five thousands suns." However, none of us on this planet felt a thing. And now comes the place where the reader exhales and declares "What a ride!" Walker concludes this little anecdote and her book with these parting words: "The most massive solar flare since records began and one of the biggest radioactive maelstroms in history together met a far more formidable foe. They each arrived, and then, one by one they simply bounced off . . . thin air." Thin air? Ah, my! What a way to finish a most interesting adventure.

"An Ocean of Air" is a superb piece of writing, an exciting and very readable exploration into something we ordinary people simply take for granted. The author also provides some suggestions for further reading, extensive endnotes, and a helpful index of topics. Believe me, this book is not to be missed and I give it my highest recommendation.

How We Came to Understand the Air Around Us

If we have a bottle that has no liquid in it, or a box that has had all objects removed from it, we will say that the bottle or the box is empty. The idea that there is nothing there but nothingness is one that goes far back, and it is only common sense: you can't see or feel anything there, so there is nothing there. Science, for all its common-sense methods, might be seen as an attack on common sense; the Earth is not flat, for instance, and the Sun does not go around it (You can just see it! It's just common sense!) And that bottle and box are not empty, but full of air. That the air is something of infinite complexity (rather than being some manifestation of nothingness) was a revelation that was centuries in coming, but the way it happened is delightfully told in _An Ocean of Air: Why the Wind Blows and Other Mysteries of the Atmosphere_ (Harcourt) by Gabrielle Walker. Chapters here detail the attack of science upon different aspects of the air, like its molecular composition, the drive of the winds, the protective nature of the ozone layer, jet streams, and the effects of humans upon it. There is one example after another of how science has harnessed observation, speculation, experiment, and eventual theories to come to an understanding that, as Walker says, "We don't just live _in_ the air. We live _because_ of it." And this is not just because we need it to breathe.

Walker starts with Galileo and his associate Torricelli, who had the heretical idea that vacuums existed (the church said they didn't). Galileo's calculations from clever experiments showed with good accuracy that air weighed one four-hundredth as much as water. This does not sound like much, but Walker points out that the air inside Carnegie Hall weighs seventy thousand pounds. But if air is not nothing and is made of something, what is it made of? For us animals, the important component for our breathing is oxygen, which was discovered by the combined efforts of Joseph Priestley in England and Antoine Lavoisier in France. The forgotten Scottish genius Joseph Black in 1754 was the first to isolate carbon dioxide, but he performed a huge number of experiments in different realms. He hardly published anything about them, writes Walker: "He didn't want to be the first, nor did he want to be famous; he simply wanted to _know_." The Irishman John Tyndall was a scientific showman; "He choreographed his lectures as for a Broadway show," packing houses so that the masses might share in scientific insight. Around 1860 he showed how important carbon dioxide was in soaking up warmth from the Sun, the beginning of our understanding of the Greenhouse Effect. Lieutenant Matthew Maury was no scientific genius, but he thought he was. He compiled tables and charts of air movement and air pressure around the world, but his wild explanations for them included thundering justifications from the Old Testament. It took a real genius, the West Virginian William Ferrel, to make sense of Maury's raw data, mathematically deriving the models of trade winds and westerlies that would have to arise in a turning globe with an atmosphere. Thomas Midgley was a jovial, beaming enthusiast, who loved a new engineering puzzle, and was praised in his time for his vastly influential inventions. The poor man died in blissful ignorance that "he would be inadvertently responsible for more damage to Earth's atmosphere than any other single organism that has ever lived." It was bad enough that Midgley invented leaded gasoline; he also invented Freon, which was supposed to be safe and inert, but decades later was shown to be causing holes in the ozone layer, a part of the ocean of air which protects us from ultraviolet rays.

The centuries of scientific advance have meant that we do have a pretty good understanding of the atmosphere, but as in the case of the ozone layer, our technologies have made changes in the air that other technologies are just now, perhaps too belatedly, uncovering. Walker's book is not specifically about the science of global warming, but it gives a good explanation of how gradually scientists became aware of the threat. The assumptions that we do not create enough carbon dioxide to cause a problem, that it does not accumulate in the atmosphere because it is absorbed in the oceans, or that it does not cause extra warmth have all been shown wrong. She has provided a structure for understanding the problem of global warming which is a scary issue, but Walker's book is not alarmist. It is rather a celebration of the unusual personalities and often tangled paths by which we have come to scientific understanding of the most vital part of our environment.

Good overview of the Substantive law

I just finished listening to all four tapes, and I would recommend it. It's not the whole criminal law lecture. More of an overview and a checklist of the different crimes and how the law affects it. But it's good to listen, too. The professor is also a bit funny, which helps. His voice is not soothing, but he makes all the points clear.

If you want to know more about criminal law, you won't get it from just listening to these tapes. You'll have to read casebooks and other supplements. I would recommend Examples and Explanations.

I know I'll be listening to these tapes again.

great Bar review checklist

I have to disagree with the previous reviewer. Yes, it is simple, but since the speaker's plan is to provide you with a complete checklist and to focus you to pass the bar, that's not a bad thing. For someone wanting a deeper analysis of the subject, this wouldn't be the thing. But I found it clear, funny, and tightly organized; just what I needed to get an overview and create a checklist that'll get me over the bar.

don't waste your money

Definitely do not recommend. First, the book is not comprehensive enough. It misses lots of key elements of labor law. Second, it vaguely summarizes court cases while leaving out key holdings or misconstruing the holdings. I really wish that Emanuel would come out with a Labor Law outline; their books tend to be much more comprehensive and explanatory. This book, on the other hand, just states so-called law, sometimes without citing sources and without elaborating enough or explaining decisions or their implications.

Though Meg reviews New Age titles that lay out organized plans for one's life (and afterlife), her own life is an unruly mess, encompassing a slacker boyfriend and his amusingly dysfunctional family, friends having extramarital affairs, and associates who can't balance their vocations and avocations. Enough propitious coincidences occur to suggest her life might also admit the occasional intrusion of the magical. Like many Booklist reviewers, Meg, the heroine of Thomas’ latest novel (following The End of Mr. Y, 2006), combines book reviewing with novel writing. But Meg has problems that are all her own: her personal life is at a dead end, and she is constantly writing and then deleting her novel while she supports her deadbeat boyfriend, Christopher, and lusts after the local museum director, Rowan. A cast of intriguing characters populates the beachside community where Meg resides, and her interactions with them help buoy Our Tragic Universe as it veers between philosophical monologues and intensely abstract discussions. As in Mr. Y, Thomas continues to wrestle provocatively with the theme of the philosophy of existence, but this time her attempts to address big ideas slow the movement of the story. Still, for readers who enjoy the ideological push and pull of philosophical fiction, Thomas is definitely worth reading. --Heather Paulson

Good for those into philosophy

This was a quirky novel about a woman in a bad relationship writing genre novels when she really wants to write a literary masterpiece. There's a bit of a soap opera with who likes who and who's cheating on who going on with her and her friends, which is kind of fun. I found this novel well-written but didn't really like the way it kept drifting off into philosophical discussions. I'd end up zoning out and then would get back into the book when the actual story continued. I guess I prefer books that keep to story . . . but I liked the writing and characters well enough that I finished the book and found it enjoyable. I think those into philosophy will probably enjoy this book.

A nod and a wink

With a tongue-in-cheek title such as "Our Tragic Universe," you know you're in for something off the beaten path. I thoroughly enjoyed the book, which is a first-person episodic, mainstream novel. Or is it? Perhaps there's more going on here than meets the eye. For instance, think about this: the protagonist of the story, Meg, sounds an AWFUL lot like the book's author, Scarlett Thomas. They're both writers, teachers, British, mid-thirties, have academic chums...and the book is written in first person. So you keep thinking, hmm, is she talking about herself here? Is this autobiographical? And then there's the conversations throughout about philosophies of writing, about books, about writing a "storyless story" (which makes you think, Hey! This book itself seems to qualify for that. What's going on here?) Normally, I don't enjoy metafictions. But what makes this different from, say, If on a Winter's Night a Traveler (Everyman's Library (Cloth)), is that you don't feel the author is playing headgames at your expense. She seems to be inviting you to play along with her (perhaps a hint is that early on, Meg tells how she loves solving crossword puzzles--the British kind, of course). Suddenly you realize that you are reading--and enjoying--a non-standard, "storyless" novel. Well, it's episodic. So is Deep in the Shade of Paradise: A Novel, which I highly recommend, but wouldn't categorize as breaking the rules, really. It's just a story about a period in these people's lives, told by one of the people, named Meg. If you don't like Meg or her friends, the lack of plot is going to be a problem for you. And if you aren't well-versed in narrative theory, the whole pseudo-metafictional thing may just be a bore for you. But for me, as it happens, I'm reading up on how to write a novel, so I found these conversations very enjoyable. I've read Frank Tippler, and Rupert Sheldrake. I know about the Omega Point (it's the end of the universe), and morphic resonance (it's your dog knowing when you're about to walk in the door, though I have to say my dog doesn't do that.)

I was puzzled by Meg's relationship with Christopher. She's living for seven years with this loser who treats her with no respect. Abuse, is more like it. And we have no clue until near the end of the book as to why Meg ever took up with this schlmiel (he's angular and sexy, whatever that means). But why does she stay with him? She's a very "together" person, she's making a living as a writer, she's quite an admirable person in some ways. She certainly has a good relationship with her dog. So why does it take her SO LONG to deal with it? Another thing that puzzled me was why everyone in the book was having an affair. Is everyone in Britain morally bankrupt? Or is this just some chicklit convention I'm not aware of? Of relationships and such, Meg is mostly mum. We don't really know, often, what her reaction is to an event, such as her boyfriend saying something abusive. She'll just carry on by taking the dog for a walk, and never mentioning the conversation again, or until later. She withholds her thoughts and feelings at odd times, and tells us the backstories of the other characters in a seemingly haphazard way. But she's such a good writer that I'm sure all of this was done on purpose, and I'm not smart enough to get it. I would've enjoyed the book more had it explored the pseudo-science bits more. It seems to be more than psuedo in the book, and yet in the end, we have a "Zeb Ross" ending, where all is explained rationally away (you'll know what I mean when you read the book) at the end by the scientists.

Thomas makes us think about fiction, and how we wish there were meaning in our lives. That things happen for a reason, and that if you work hard and heroically, you will get the girl and vanquish the dragon. We like to think that the Universe is not just some tragic joke. That all can be fixed and have a happy ending in 22 minutes plus commercials. That there are secret powers we know nothing about, and we're all immortal. That we aren't living the lives we see on television, so we jump from bed to bed looking for the right sitcom to live in. Thomas makes you question the assumptions your life is built upon. There's a lot to think about and enjoy here. I'm glad I got a chance to read this, thanks to the Vine program. Thanks, Amazon!

Not what I expected -- not in a bad way

After reading The End of Mr. Y, I thought this was going to have some science fiction elements and be very plot driven, but it turned out to be something completely different. Odd circumstances were set up, but the story never went where I thought it would.

I was going to describe Our Tragic Universe as a character driven novel, but that doesn't seem right, either. This is something completely different.

The characters in this novel discuss storycrafting quite a bit, and one thing that comes up often is the idea of the storyless story. This sounds like an oxymoron, but it's the best way to describe Our Tragic Universe.

That doesn't mean that nothing happens, but it doesn't follow a regular plot outline. Things do happen in the lives of the characters, but not in the formulaic way that we are accustomed to. The main character doesn't have anything that drives her to act. It's more like things happen and she adapts. When I describe it that way, it sounds really boring, but I wasn't bored. I enjoyed the writing and my curiosity about what was going to happen kept me reading.

I've never read a story like this before. It's worth reading just for its uniqueness. I think this is a book that will be discussed in writing classes, I'm just not sure if it will be received as an example of what to do, or what not to do. Either way, I liked it and feel as though I should read it again now that I know what to expect from this peculiar novel.

In the Aeneid, the only notable lines Virgil devotes to Aeneas' second wife, Lavinia, concern an omen: the day before Aeneus lands in Latinum, Lavinia's hair is veiled by a ghost fire, presaging war. Le Guin's masterful novel gives a voice to Lavinia, the daughter of King Latinus and Queen Amata, who rule Latinum in the era before the founding of Rome. Amata lost her sons to a childhood sickness and has since become slightly mad. She is fixated on marrying Lavinia to Amata's nephew, Turnus, the king of neighboring Rutuli. It's a good match, and Turnus is handsome, but Lavinia is reluctant. Following the words of an oracle, King Latinus announces that Lavinia will marry Aeneas, a newly landed stranger from Troy; the news provokes Amata, the farmers of Latinum, and Turnus, who starts a civil war. Le Guin is famous for creating alternative worlds (as in Left Hand of Darkness), and she approaches Lavinia's world, from which Western civilization took its course, as unique and strange as any fantasy. It's a novel that deserves to be ranked with Robert Graves's I, Claudius. (Apr.)

Adult/High School—This novel takes a minor character from Vergil's Aeneid and creates a thoughtful, moving tale of prophecy, myth, and self-fulfillment. Lavinia is the teen princess of Latium, a small but important kingdom in pre-Roman Italy. As she moves into womanhood, she feels pressure from her parents to choose one of her many suitors as both her husband and the future ruler of the kingdom. But the oracles of the sacred springs say she will marry an unknown foreigner. This stranger is none other than Vergil's Aeneus, proud hero, king without a country, and the man who will lay down the foundations of the Roman Empire. Their marriage sparks a war to control the region; while readers don't see the glorious battles, they do get the surprisingly moving perspective of the home front through Lavinia's eyes. Best known for her works of fantasy, Le Guin takes a more historical approach here by toning down the magical elements; gods and prophecies have a vital role in the protagonist's life, but they are presented as concepts and rituals, not as deities playing petty games with the lives of mortals. This shifts the focus of Vergil's plot from action to character, allowing Le Guin to breathe life into a character who never utters a word in the original story. Lavinia is quite compelling as she transforms from a spirited princess into a queen full of wisdom who makes a profound impact on her people. Though Aeneas risks inciting a civil war as he fights to win her hand in marriage, despite the fact that she is promised to another, more politically expedient suitor, Lavinia herself remains strangely mute and is given no scope in the epic poem. Here, as Le Guin reworks the story, Lavinia evolves into a true woman of destiny, eventually forging a strong partnership with the legendary founder of Rome. The compulsively readable Le Guin earns kudos for fashioning a winning combination of history and mythology featuring an unlikely heroine imaginatively plucked from literary obscurity. --Margaret Flanagan

I read about Le Guin's adaption of the second 6 books of the Aeneid in last Saturday's WSJ's Arts Section. She prepared by reading the entire epic in Latin.

This book is even more spare, more austere than most of her work, but it is not self-conscious or self-gratulatory about it. She has caught the "Old Roman" voice and understands the almost untranslatable words "pietas" and "nefas."

No English words do these concepts of moral and civic virtue as opposed to unspeakable wrong justice, and Le Guin both knows this and presents them as the ongoing moral struggles and examples they represent. She has also placed herself firmly in the grand tradition in which, Vergil, Dante's "il miglior fabbro" (sp) appears to her (and to her protagonist, the Italian princess who marries Aeneas) and explains, as he is floating in and out of life, what he was trying to do with his vision, in tribute to and in conflict with Augustus in a very different city indeed.

In the end, character enters into dialogue with poet: creator and created benefit from the experience. Because, as Lavinia says with no resentment, Vergil has failed to "breathe sufficient life" into her (she has not a single word of dialogue in the poem), she has not life enough to die like Dido (who really is an operatic character), but lives on, a quiet, eloquent voice of an intregrity that Rome lost, but never ceased to value.

Le Guin's prose is very different from the clangor of the dactylic hexameter epic line. It is brilliant, bravura, meant for battle and great deeds; Lavinia's quiet prose describes daily wonders and is wrought out of her service of her city, her family, and her altars -- a different sort of vocabulary, indeed. Both possess their own strengths.

And Le Guin now joins the artists who, in the Middle Ages, wrote within the Matter of Antiquity, which was, as a twelfth-century Frenchman said, wise.

He was right.

Masterpiece

At what is undeniably the height of her writing prowess, Ursula K. Le Guin brings us a novel of incredible richness and depth. As example I offer this: It is the only book I have read that contains a self-aware character. Lavinia sees herself as a character, brought into being by Virgil's poem and given immortality by her scant share of it. "I am contingent," she tells us early on, perhaps meaning that her being is dependent upon Virgil who will be born many centuries in her future.

What emerges under Le Guin's careful stewardship of this fragile being, brought into existence by a passing remark of a poet, is a rich landscape of simple country life. Along with Lavinia we experience the joys and comfort of simple rituals, offerings to household gods and the spinning of wool. We witness the arrival of a great hero as foretold by ancient oracles. As treaties are made and broken we endure the horror of war and then watch with pondering inevitability as the happiness of marriage swiftly becomes the tragedy of a widow and the squandering of a husband's dream.

We are redeemed in the end by Lavinia's immortality and by, again, the inevitability of history. Rome is founded. Virgil writes his epic. Lavinia is given life.

With her skill, Le Guin does more than expand upon the immortal life that Virgil granted to Lavinia, she draws us into that life. Lavinia speaks to us across the centuries, but through Le Guin's work, we also wander the wooded hills of ancient Latinum.

There is depth to this work that I think I will only discover upon re-reading it. And then there are depths that I think I will only discover after re-reading the Aenied. And there are still more depths that are hinted at, glimmers in the darkness, that I may never guess at unless I were to learn more Latin and read the Aeneid in Virgil's own language. That is why I call this novel "masterpiece." If I do not see its like again I will be satisfied to know that some measure of it will go on, as Lavinia has.

what a lovely book!

This is the by far the best book I have read so far in 2008. It has lovely prose, and filled with intelligent writing and levels upon levels of meaning.

LeGuin is clearly inspired by the classic The Aeneid: (Penguin Classics Deluxe Edition) (Penguin Classics Deluxe Editio).

She tells the story of Aeneas and the Trojans coming to Italy through the point of view of the native Latin people, particularly through the eyes of their kind and intelligent princess, Lavinia, destined to become the second wife of the Trojan prince and leader Aeneas, and the mother of Rome.

The events of this story can be interpreted as a tragedy to the Latins - armed strangers come to their country, a war immediately breaks out, the leader of the strangers marries their princess (the only surviving child of their king), and their culture and destiny are changed forever. The Latins living through these happenings certainly do not realize that these events will someday lead to the Roman Empire.

Particularly well done (in a marvelously well written book) are the explorations of the relationship between creator and character - as in the scenes when Lavinia goes to the sacred springs of her family and receives visions of the poet Virgil. She is his character; he her creator. They are being granted visions of each other, separated as they are through hundreds of years and layers of myths and legend. Does he change reality to better fit his artistic visions? Who effects whom more - Lavinia or Virgil? Which comes first - character or creator?

It has been known for some time that Woolf was molested by her Duckworth half-brothers. Drawing on Woolf's published and unpublished writings, on writings by the Stephen family, and on the recent literature of child abuse, DeSalvo argues that these dreadful experiences are the key to Woolf's instability and crucial to her artistic vision. The author marshals her well-documented argument carefully, but it is finally too unrelenting, theoretical, and even speculative. DeSalvo's version of the Stephen household, where "incest, sexual violence, and abusive behavior were a common, rather than a singular or rare occurrence," is too exaggerated to be convincing. It is a pleasure to emerge from DeSalvo's overheated book and enter into the clarity, grace, elegance, and high critical intelligence of Volume 3 of Woolf's collected essays. Written at a time when Woolf was emerging as a mature novelist, the essays--primarily reviews of forgotten books--constantly delight and surprise, as when an assessment of two minor works remind us that the "novel is not hung upon a nail and festooned with glory, but, on the contrary, walks the high road, alive and alert, and brushes shoulders with real men and women." Bearing interestingly on the fiction Woolf was writing at the time, these excellently edited essays reconfirm her major importance as a 20th-century writer.

This is the third of a (yet uncompleted) series of collections of Virginia Woolf's essays edited by Andrew McNeillie. Of the projected series of a total of six books of Woolf's essays only four have been published so far. When this great undertaking has finished, we will at last have at our disposal the first COMPLETE publication of all the essays and reviews of one of the best-read women in the western world. This series is of immense significance to Woolf scholars,students and lovers, of which they are increasingly many, not only because all her essays will be collected in a neat series but also, and more importantly, because in all the books of the series, including this volume, there are/will be non-fiction pieces by Woolf which are no longer available to the 'common reader' as they can only be found in the archives of the newspapers, journals and magazines that Woolf wrote for in her times. Till recently, apart from her well-known essays 'A Room of One's Own' and 'Three Guineas', Woolf's talent and importance as a critic had not been fully appreciated. This volume, along the others in the series, is both one of the factors and the effects of the recent surge of interest in Woolf's critical art, and is an extremely valuable contribution in that it makes manifest the whole range of writing of a literary figure who excelled not just in fiction but was also an equally masterful essay writer and polemical commentator and reviewer of modern times.
